TTC After a Loss

TTC after Ectopic

I'd love to hear from others about what to expect.

I went in to the ER a week ago for severe pain and heavy bleeding, to a confirmed Ectopic Pregnancy. I was 6 weeks. I was early enough they felt confident moving forward with the Methotrexate Injection as opposed to surgery. I bleed for about 4 days before it stopped. My hCG was already down to 1 at my follow-up blood draw.

I'm beyond crushed, and although I spent the first few days crying all the time, each day is helping.

The hardest part of this whole situation is just not knowing what to expect. Most everything I read said wait 3 months or at least 2-3 cycles before you start TTC again. My OB basically said to get through my next cycle and see how I feel. Logically I know we need to get back on the wagon but I cannot help but feel anxious about it.

How long was it before you got your next period? Did you start tracking your ovulation right away? How long before you were able to conceive again? Anything else?

I was unfortunately not lucky enough to catch mine in time and had to have my tube removed. I got my period about 2 weeks after surgery. O day and LP length were fairly erratic for 5-6 months. I was just able to conceive last month, but this was probably also affected by my only having one tube. I have heard different things from different people, but a lot of people think you should wait 6 months after taking that drug to TTC. Good luck to you and I am happy to give you any other information you'd like!

I'm very sorry for your loss.  My situation was a bit different.  I didn't have any of the typical signs of an ectopic and even the ultrasound at about 7 weeks appeared to show abnormal pregnancy tissue in the uterus.  I had a D&C scheduled for 4 days later.  When I awoke from it, I was told that there was nothing in my uterus and they suspected it was ectopic.  I underwent more blood work and another sonogram before undergoing surgery again later that night.  I was very lucky that my tube didn't burst, but it had to be removed.  I was told I could TTC after 1 cycle, but I needed to heal emotionally.  My period returned about a month after my surgery and was pretty normal, although a few days longer in between cycles,  following that.

We were going to start trying again a few months later, but a job opportunity presented itself that I couldn't pass up. We put off TTC, but when we finally did, I was lucky to get pregnant right away.  I actually got my BFP exactly a year after my BFP from the ectopic.

Having a loss changes you.  I was a nervous wreck at the beginning and still am not entirely relaxed at almost 21 weeks even though obviously this is very different from my ectopic.  Take time to heal.  There were days where I was feeling better and then something would set me off and I'd break down.  It took me a while before I felt ok and there were still things that would pop into my mind or I'd hear about that would make me emotional. Getting pregnant again especially at the same time a year later brought back a lot of the emotions too.  It's okay to go through all kinds of emotions and to grieve for as long as you need to.  Wishing you strength, comfort and success in your journey.

  • @MetsGirl18 - Thank you for sharing. I'm sorry you had to go through that, but happy you got a BFP when you tried again! It definitely has been an emotional process for sure. I spent the first few days basically always crying. As the days go by it seems to get better, but emotionally I still feel drained. I'm both anxious and ready to try again. I'm very gun-shy about it....because it took 10 months just to get one BFP. The thought of it taking that long again just makes me very upset.
  • @toesinthesand-2 - I didn't have an etopic so I have no words of wisdom for you on that one.  Just wanted to say sorry and I totally get you about the thought of a BFP taking long again.  It took us 6 months to get a BFP with my chemical pregnancy at 5weeks.  I didn't even feel like TTC the first month out - the thought of it taking another 6 months or longer can be daunting at times.  TTCAL is so different for me.  I've been finding other things to put my energy into while we continue this process.

my second loss was an ectopic. I had pain and my hcg was slowly increasing I only ever made it to 575. I had the methotrexate shot. I was told I had to wait 3 months to start trying.  I got my first period two weeks after the shot and my next one was about a month later.
  • @Hopefulmommy1980- The waiting game for my period to start is the worst. I'm just a couple of days shy of 2 weeks since my diagnosis and methotrexate shot. I hate not knowing when I'll start. :( I just want to get things going so that when the 3 months has passed if we're ready we can get back to it.
  • @toesinthesand-2 I agree the waiting sucks.
