Any nightshifters???

Anyone else work nights?  I am a Critical Care RN working 7p to 730a.

How are you holding up?  I am finding myself a lot more tired around the 2am mark then I had in the past.  Doesn't help that I was a usual 5 to 6 cup coffee drinker and am cutting down to 2.

What are you packing for food? Prior to pregnancy and even up until just recently I was following a pretty clean diet and meal prepping.  I have caved in the last few days and given into some cravings and veggies are actually making me nauseous right now.

Re: Any nightshifters???

  • I'm an RN in the nursery.  Babies are up all night so being tired hasn't been a problem.  I am just nauseous all the time. I pack everything but the kitchen sink. Carrots and ranch, crackers jello cheese sticks. Mac and cheese. Yogurt with granola.  And sometimes go to the vending machine for a snickers lol.  Are you going  to stay on nights when the baby comes?

  • I almost made a run to the vending machine last night as everything I packed made me nauseous to even look at.

I do plan on staying on nights when baby comes as it actually works better with my older kids school and sports schedules.  Plus, I am more of a night person anyways accept right now when I want to sleep all the time.  Hoping my energy returns in the 2nd trimester.
  • I'm not, but I did during my first pregnancy. And it was REALLY hard!  I ended up snacking all the time to stay awake. Not the best. Hang in there ladies!  :#

  • Yep, RN nights in Emergency. I've told a few key coworkers who are helping me get by... sneaking me out for 20 min power naps if I'm dying, keeping their mouths shut if I snack at the desks... mostly I'm struggling and sleeping every hour I'm not working!
  • I'm a Trauma/Orthopedic nurse. Work days and nights (usually 2weeks days then 2 weeks nights.) Pre-pregnancy the nights never bothered me but I was seriously struggling to stay awake Mon night. For food I'll bring a salad I made with usually chicken in it. And I'll bring snacks like almonds, dried fruit, string cheese, yogurt with granola. But it's hard to stomach the salads lately so I'll eat pb&j instead. The nights are especially rough right now, hang in there!
  • I feel you on the salad.  I always packed a huge salad for one of my meals.  Last night I found myself choking it down.  All that even seemed good to me was the chicken out of it.
  • I'm an EMT and I came off my permanent overnight shift while I was pregnant with DS3, but I still pick them up occasionally. It's been hard lately, because I'm just so tired 24 hours a day, but I don't feel like my day/eve shifts have been much easier. I find myself packing a lot of snacks. Especially popcorn, pretzels, fruit, veggies, and a lot of water!
  • When I have evening meetings its a struggle. I eat before and last time I over-ate dinner beforehand and was uncomfortable to say the least with gas and cramping. I kept getting up or moving and nothing helped. We lead groups and seem to have 50 people and are in a library setting or so making it frowned upon/ super awkward to pull out a snack during the presentation and discussion. Once I announce it would be o.k. but for now I chug water and take frequent breaks. By the drive home that night I was in such bad shape and literally used my last strength to climb the stairs and crawl into bed.
  • I'm at the police station and night shifts are tough but at least I'm at a desk and can walk around if I want to... I admire all you nurses...
  • I work late second shift right now and have for my entire adult life. I'm moving to first shift next week though and am super nervous! I am not a morning person especially pregnant.  :o
  • @baby3forme I do 7a-7p and 7p-7a. I think you will be fine on first shift. I'm not a morning person either but the morning shifts have been Soo much easier than nights since being pregnant.
  • @ttc_makingacoffey Thank you for everything you do!  My SO is a LEO so I appreciate any and all first responders!

@baby3forme I switched to nights after being a power weekend days person.  There are days with this pregnancy I wish I was back on days.  Like my off days when I am nauseous at night as my body seems to always be in night shift mode.
