I bought a pg nutrition book this weekend ("Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy" by Elizabeth Somer), and it says,
"The risk for spontaneous abortions was inversely related to the woman's intake of green vegetables, fruit, milk, cheese, fish, and eggs. The risk was 70% lower when mothers ate lots of fruit, 50% lowers with adequate cheese intake, 40% lowers with lots of vegetables and adequate milk, and 30% lower with the addition of eggs and fish. Diets too high in fatty foods raised abortion risk up to twofold." (p 110)
(she means abortion in the clinical sense).
Have you ever heard of this before? I'm suprised, to be honest. I know it's important to eat healthy during 1st tri, but good lord. Thoughts?
Re: Fatty diets increase risk for m/c?!
She cited a study from the University of Milan in Italy. It didn't give any more info than that.
She definitely advocates for healthy fats, and there is a whole section as to why intake of cholestrol is important for the baby's development, which make me trust her a little more. But it just seems like such a big statement...perhaps I'm just extrapolating and not keeping it within context.
