NICU / Early Arrival Check-in 4.02

Since we have several families with NICU babies or early arrivals and updates buried in the randoms thread, it seemed like time to give the babies their own space? Started with these questions but open to other ideas!

How old is/are baby(ies) (outside days/weeks and gestational age)?

How much does baby / do babies weigh?

Recent struggles / frustrations and triumphs / milestones?

What is coming up next (goals for baby/babies)?

Questions? Anything else?

Random: Favorite thing to order at a coffee shop (drink / pastry / etc)?

Tagging mamas I can remember: @Squirtgun @SJsMommy @mcvgal
@swoodd2012?

  • @Squirtgun Thank you for sharing your birth story! Thomas sounds like a determined little man!
@mcvgal I'm so glad she's growing and doing well. It sounds like you're doing great with pump/BM too! Do you know when she gets to go home?

@mcvgal: Is it true that your little Lucia's almost a month old? That's amazing!   :)   <3
  • @Squirtgun Good to hear your story! (I didn't mean to keep you from making your own thread) It sounds like your little man is doing well -- he's a really good size too, holy cow!!

@mcvgal  Amen about getting off the pump. There's a good article called the "Magic Number" by Nancy Morbacher about how often you really need to pump -- the bottom line is do whatever keeps you sane. ;) I'm so glad to hear Lucia is nursing well. FX she can transition to an open crib soon - it makes such a difference (you feel like you can actually hold your baby when you want to!).

  • Popping in for a couple reasons -
    1. Congrats to all and I'm glad to hear we keep getting good news about these little fighters. I love getting updates and hearing about them. Makes my day!
    2. One of my very best friends has a babe in the NICU right now. She's stable but having trouble getting home for a variety of factors. I just wanted to ask if you guys had any tips/suggestions to help support her. I took her out to dinner last week and have been checking in periodically for updates and trying to offer support but it feels like never enough. Anything that people have done for you or wish they had done that would mean the world? Unfortunately I don't have a lot of extra $ these days or Id love to get them a few hours of housekeeping etc to help keep up at home or something like that. They also have a 15-month old, for what that's worth.
  • @ShadeofGreen816 The fact that you're checking in with her and thinking about how to make her life easier is really the biggest gift. It gets so incredibly lonely to have a baby you can't take home (even with other kiddos at home), so company is the best thing friends have offered me/us. If I think of other genius ideas I'll add them. ;)

  • @SWoodd2012 So glad to hear you didn't need any NICU time. It sounds like Henry is doing well. Totally understand the worry about being home with a little peanut - I'll be right there with you soon! Sounds like his weight is really stable and they will keep a close eye on you. Keep us posted about how he's doing!

  • @SWoodd2012 I am so happy for you not to have to worry about NICU time. He sounds like he is doing well. It's totally normal to lose a bit of weight in the beginning. I hope he starts gaining again soon.

  • @SWoodd2012 So glad to hear Henry didn't have to do any NICU time! I can't imagine the terror of bringing such a tiny baby home, but you've got this! It sounds like your providers are staying on top of things and you are even more tuned in to Henry's needs and current state. Thinking about you and your family!
  • @swoodd2012 our good friends had twins at 35 weeks back in oct.  Both were under 5lbs and came home after 2 days.  No NICU time for them either. They are little porkers and have had no issues at all since being home.  I can't imagine how scary and unexpected it must be but not to worry sounds like the docs have a good eye on him. Hoping his weight check goes well today. Good Luck!
