Hungry!

Anyone else super hungry right away in the first trimester? I am 8.5 weeks, and haven't had almost any morning sickness. Instead I'm just hungry all the time! It feels like I'm already gaining weight, and I'm worried I'm going to gain too much early on. Are others ravenous, and are you always eating when hungry? Or have you been trying to stick to your pre-pregnancy caloric intake?

Re: Hungry!

  • I'm hungry all the time! I'm trying to keep my eating under control, and am trying to reach for fruit instead of unhealthy food. But it's a challenge!

  • Insatiable. From the minute my eyes open till the minute they close at night. Plus, if I wake up at night, I'm starving then too!
  • I have had exactly 2 days where I was voraciously hungry. The rest of the time, I'm eating probably half-sized portions of what I normally eat. I try to make up for it by eating more meals during the day. I have "gained" a pound and a half, but I put that in quotation marks because I'm so bloated/constipated, lol. Eating these days is a chore and a struggle and it usually makes me miserable. I can't wait for this to pass.

  • I'm hungrier but I get fuller faster. I eat a lot of smaller meals. I'm not really watching what I eat, other than adding more healthy foods, but have lost a few lbs. Before pregnancy I ate healthy-ish but had larger portions and always ate till I was stuffed.

  • Yep, definitely starving. It's worse in the evenings, and it seems to wax and wane day to day, such that I get used to packing lots of snacks when I go to work so that I won't get hungry and make bad choices, then one day don't need them, but wind up eating them anyway because.... habits. I agree with @slaven that I am getting full on smaller portions, and I am normally a big eater.

  • Yes.  I've already woken up twice in the middle of the night and had to eat a snack.  I mean, I've laid there for about an hour telling myself, 'It's fine. You'll fall back asleep.'  but eventually give in and just eat a stupid PB sandwich to get my belly full so I can get some sleep!  I'm always so irritated when this happens during pregnancy, because I feel like I don't even get to enjoy the middle of the night calories because I just want to sleep!!

I had this the first time and now the second time around I feel nauseous but it's only cause I'm ravenous! I try to stay active and this time around I'm tracking my food to make sure I'm getting calories from the right sources i.e. fat and protein and fiber. I'm using my fitness pal set to maintain weight. Don't worry too much about weight gain as long as you make (mostly) healthy choices. If you're craving sugar and carbs (which I am) try to fill it with things like fruit and small portions of whole grains or rice. I tell myself if the ice cream craving lasts an hour I can go out and get it (don't keep it in the house!!) Mostly the craving passes and I can satisfy it with something else. Alot of early weight gain is just bloat/gas/water wait and see if it actually sticks around. Long winded but hope it helps!!!
  • I'm the opposite right now. Nothing sounds/tastes good. I'm eating the food, but it all tastes the same right now. Weird.
  • I am starved and must eat to keep nausea at bay. But, when I start to eat I can only finish about ahlf of whatever it is! I feel like I eat 10 small meals per day!

  • I'm hungry 99% of the time. I do get nauseous - no vomiting tho...but I do kno when I get nauseous I need water and to find food. So that might not be helping the fact that I eat almost 24/7. I've been good at eating protein packed snacks or dairy like Greek yogurt, cheese sticks, almonds. But it does suck when the nausea kicks in when I think I've eaten enough that day. But it won't pass until I eat something
  • I am queasy 75% of the time...but craving super unhealthy foods. It's really hard because I think about the salad in my fridge and it makes me feel sick....but made chocolate chip cookies. :|  I'm trying to eat healthy but it's been super hard.  I need to get back on track, prior to this pregnancy I had lost 100 lbs and do NOT want to gain it back.
  • @Tbm1124 100lbs!!! Wow you go girl. Once baby is here you'll have to give me some advice on how you did it. I don't need to loose 100 but I'm sure by the time I'm done with this pregnancy I'll need to loose at least 50lbs.
  • I'm starving constantly.   All. The. Time.

Thanks.  It began with using some appetite suppressant prescription and then I just developed healthier eating habits so I went off the pill after a few months.  The last 20 or so was due to stress in starting a new position...not eating enough (not healthy...I admit that).  I need to find time for the gym....even now.  Long commute+3 year old+desire to spend quality family time > desire to work out
  • Thanks for all of these responses! You ladies are the best. I just ordered a pregnancy nutrition book and I'm hoping that will also help me to make healthier choices
