1st Trimester

Fatty diets increase risk for m/c?!

I bought a pg nutrition book this weekend ("Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy" by Elizabeth Somer), and it says,

"The risk for spontaneous abortions was inversely related to the woman's intake of green vegetables, fruit, milk, cheese, fish, and eggs. The risk was 70% lower when mothers ate lots of fruit, 50% lowers with adequate cheese intake, 40% lowers with lots of vegetables and adequate milk, and 30% lower with the addition of eggs and fish.  Diets too high in fatty foods raised abortion risk up to twofold." (p 110)

(she means abortion in the clinical sense).

Have you ever heard of this before? I'm suprised, to be honest. I know it's important to eat healthy during 1st tri, but good lord. Thoughts?

Re: Fatty diets increase risk for m/c?!

  • Did she cite any medical studies? If the relationship is inverse, it doesn't sound like risk goes up- it means risk goes down with adequate intake.

  • But I'm guessing they mean diets that are composed mainly of fatty foods. If you eat donuts, chips, and burgers all day you don't have a lot of room left to eat the healthy stuff, right? I don't think this means you can't have some junk- in fact, I *think* I read somewhere that pregnant women need and can tolerate extra cholesterol. I do know that cholesterol is necessary for the production of steroid hormones (including estrogen, testosterone, etc).
  • Never heard that before. Kinda scary if it is true because at this point I am having a hard time getting anything down!
  • I know Chinese doctor (those that prescribes "herbal tea" rather than western medicines...) will say avoid fatty food, like pork belly, bacon, anything that's too oily and fat. It's in general unhealthy but probably increase certain heart risk I think? I didn't ask too much details as I don't have the stomach for fatty stuff too much anyway since I'm PG. They also recommend no spicy food... the old Chinese saying is that it'll make your baby more grouchy and stuff... I don't know if there are any medical studies on it, but I just limit my spicy food intake during PG.
  • I've never heard that before. I've heard you need to eat healthy, and that eating lots of fat is bad for the baby, but not that it would cause a m/c.  Everything I read about m/c's said the only action you can take that would contribute to a m/c is heavy alcohol and drug use.

  • She cited a study from the University of Milan in Italy. It didn't give any more info than that.

She definitely advocates for healthy fats, and there is a whole section as to why intake of cholestrol is important for the baby's development, which make me trust her a little more. But it just seems like such a big statement...perhaps I'm just extrapolating and not keeping it within context.

  • That's strange because normally you hear that all the fruits listed are pretty much nessecary especially the source of protein through eggs, etc.  Weird.
