Nap Strike?

After about 2 weeks of refusing her afternoon nap, I thought we were transitioning to 1 nap a day... But now she is refusing any and all naps. This is our 2nd week of no naps. What is going on and what do I do??? I'm too sleep deprived and emotional to come up with a logical plan.

Re: Nap Strike?

  • I am kind of a hard ass about napping and being on a nap/sleep schedule. The baby gets two naps a day, at 9:00 and 1:00.  The 4 yr old gets one nap/quiet time starting at the end of lunch or 1:00, whichever happens first. This is non-negotiable. If you decide not to sleep, that's your problem, you will not nap any other time (except driving in the car).  Bedtime is 7:00 for both boys, morning wake up is at 7:00 for the 4 yr old and 7:20 for the baby (gives me time to get the 4 yr old set up for breakfast), again non-negotiable. It seems ridged, but it seems to work for us. Neither boy fusses for more than 10 minutes about naps or bedtime, and if the older one doesn't want to nap he can read or play quietly, but he doesn't get to go to bed early and he still has to get up on time for school. As to why your little monkey isn't napping suddenly, I haven't any ideas, but maybe she is teething? The boys both seem to have some issues with sleeping when they have teeth, particularly molars, coming in. Teething seriously sucks on so many levels. Why can't they just get all their teeth in over the course of a month and be done with it all? Good luck!

  • Mine refuses to nap both times. She throws a shit fit as soon as I put her in her crib and I have no idea why! As soon as the time changed this is when it started. I let her cry and try to soothe her, basically the cry it out method. She eventually falls asleep but it can range from 30 minutes to an hour. She's normally not like this so it may be her molars. No advice just commiserating. Just keep in mind it'll pass. It's only a phase.
  • Brynlee has been a total monster about naps recently too... she used to go down around 1 pm, then bed around 9 pm. But now she's decided that she won't nap period... until she literally just passes out wherever she lands, usually around 7 pm. But then once she wakes up, she thinks it's party time at all hours of the night and wee morning.
  • More commiseration for a non napping LO. We also have a shit fit anytime I put him in his crib. We have managed to get OK naps, but nothing near what he used to. Also he's not ready for a transition to one nap, though I thought he was. He was only getting 1 50 minute nap and was up all hour and of the night as a result of being overtired. Basically the name of the game is get him to nap at all costs. I'm hoping it's just the tail end of this last leap and it will pass. Some days are getting better which gives me hope  :D
  • I'm currently unsure if David is ready to transition to one nap or is just going through a phase. We've been on vacation right now, and a different house/room/bed means the first nap has been even harder than it would be at home. He's definitely gotten overtired this week and that has only happened very rarely. Any good strategies for helping them get back on track? Being overtired makes it hard to fall asleep and falling asleep late keeps him overtired. Vicious cycle!
  • I swear sometimes it's the last thing I want to do (going out in public) when I'm worn down to the nub and looking like death in my pajamas. But, to break a nap strike after breakfast I get him dressed appropriately and get him outside. I let him walk and stumble around in the grass with his big sister until whines to be picked up. Use our bucket swing. Give him snack or nurse. Then I strap him in the ergo in my back and walk around with my oldest. I'll keep them outside until lunch. It's perfect that it's brisk windy and sunny. Then after lunch he's done. Most of the time he's out before I come in to fix lunch. It's like a workout for him. When you work out you sleep better.
  • Thank you for all the commiserating. We HAD a really good schedule going for a long time but it's not happening anymore. I still try to put her down every day at the same time and when she gives sleepy signs but she immediately stands up and yellls/cries. We have had 3 naps since this post, but they have all been when DH decided to babywear her. Definitely not something we can do every day.
  • WE recently dropped afternoon nap too, just this week. She usually loves napping but has been screaming bloody murder so we've been skipping. First nap 11-1ish and bedtime 7-730
  • Omg it's a miracle, she is napping in her crib!!!! I don't know when the last time she did that. She has been up since 3am, but I'm still counting this as a major win!!!! I just had to share the good news haha. Please oh please sleep a long time little one!
