Re: Weekly Random 3/20

  • When DS goes poop he sits on the toilet for 30 mins and tells stories.  It is probably my favorite time of day because he doesn't want me in the room or to talk to him, which means it is 30 mins of guilt free internet time.

  • @secicc12 I can't go to a movie in a movie theatre because of the noise of people opening EVERYTHING, and I can hear the people near me eating.
  • @DeansGirl14 everyday... Sometimes I say 'she is hanging in there' sometimes I'm a bit more forward, like 'She hates the weather and wishes it would just stay warm' People, I see the doctor once a month, in between that time, all I know is my body seems to be doing the right things and I am starting to feel little flutters. Other than that, I know as much as you do!
Haha! Maybe I'll start making stuff up when I get that question. Like, "well she read a really good book the other day..."

To @littlebug2010 's point, it is weird when people ask me how I am doing. Because in the grand scheme of pregnancy, I'm fine. Literally, there's plenty to complain about but it's just because pregnancy is so far from normal what else can you say?
Someone who recently gave birth asked me on FB how I was doing and I replied, " ' Fine'- you know how it is." I told my doctor just yesterday I really had technically nothing to complain about because the tiredness, headaches, and congestion are all totally normal pregnancy symptoms. Blah! My good friend had probably the best response to the "how are you feeeeeeling?" questions. She'd just say, "Pregnant. I feel pregnant." Yup that sums it up.

@LSP87 UGH the loud chewers are the worst! It literally makes my skin crawl. Poor DH... he chews at a normal volume and I still need to put music on to get through dinner. Something about that noise is just revolting to me. Also hate people crinkling bags of chips super loudly. It took this guy in my office a solid 30 minutes to eat a small bag of chips today...HURRY UP ALREADY AND THROW THE BAG AWAY!

    I may have a problem.
@secicc12 meee tooo! It hurts DH's feelings. I try to play it off by turning up the tv like I cant hear..but he know the truth and gets sad lol. I can't handle the crinkling, chewing, swallowing...oh god, the swallowing. Everyone would make jokes that when DS was born I would be annoyed by him as well. Untrue. The peace lasted for about 2-3 years and he's only mildly annoying when he eats.
  • @breanna428 we went with a full-sized bed when DD transitioned at 26 months. I took the advice of a lot of other moms who said the toddler bed was a waste and that a lot of kids transition and sleep better in a larger bed. We have mesh rails on her bed.

@littlebug2010 guarantee those ladies would stop asking if you did answer like that. :)

My DH is the same and it bothers me soooo much more when I'm pg! I've had to leave the dinner table several times when he was slurping or crunching too loud. And I have a coworker who is the loudest eater ever and he always manages to sit next to me at lunch. It drives me craaaazy.
DD's chewing still hasn't bothered me thank goodness.
  • Yep. Mild misophonia here. At work, whenever someone eats in a cubicle next to mine I take a walk. Trying to concentrate while someone chews puts me in a rage. It really surprises me how angry I can get over an asshole eating an apple.
  • This makes me so happy that I'm not alone in my chewing noise rage.

  • Ironic! I just bought my son (3.5) a full bed today. He has slept with me in my king since 6 months, so he is used to rolling around on a large mattress. I thought a twin would be too small, plus the full can last him years. My goal is to transition him to fully sleeping in his own bed before the baby comes. I plan to cosleep/bedshare with this one, as well. I bought a dockatot today for the bed. (Please don't try to educate me about dangers of bed sharing. I have done research and follow the safety guidelines for it. I truly think me and my son have a deeper bond from bedsharing all these years)
  • @breanna428 Both of my kids hated the crib and wound up in our bed at different points.  We converted each of their cribs to full beds between 2 and 2.5.  We had bed rails because they moved around a lot in their sleep and put a step stool at the foot of the bed to help them get into and out of bed.  They like having the larger beds and we didn't have any issues with full sized beds.

Ginger. Bring ginger ale (with real ginger) with you in the car, or buy GinGins ginger candy or Tummy Drops. (Tummy Drops are expensive but effective.)
I don't think the ginger eliminates the sick feeling but it certainly tempers it, in my experience.  I've also discovered I'm more likely to feel motion sickness when on an empty stomach, so pack saltines or something.

DH and I went out to dinner for my birthday last night - tried somewhere new but went to our favorite spot in town for dessert. I'm just over 18 weeks and only 5'4" so in the right clothes, I think I'm definitely showing, but DH was super thrown off when the host/waiter gave us our dessert menus and then gave the wine list to DH saying something along the lines of how it obviously wasn't for me (paraphrasing because I can't remember exactly but it was not at all said offensively). DH wasn't shocked or upset at how he said it, but that he said anything at all alluding to the pregnancy because DH is of the opinion that you do not ask, mention, assume, etc. until it's really, really obvious. Do you ladies feel like we are far enough along for people to mention it if they haven't seen us before to know we look differently? Just interested since DH was so surprised and I wasn't because I think I totally look pregnant.

Also, apparently until a couple weeks ago, DH thought I was crazy for ordering a maternity dress to wear to the wedding we're going to this weekend so I think he just barely thinks it should be apparent to other people. I ordered the dress off of Zuillily at 12 weeks since shipping takes forever so I wasn't showing at all then. He just told me this last night while we were discussing whether it was appropriate for the waiter to allude to the pregnancy.

@kvh22  Unless my H sees a woman pushing a baby out he will not say anything about her being pregnant unless she says it first.

I guess I wouldn't be offended if someone said something about my pregnancy unprompted and based on my physical appearance. People have said worse to me based on appearance before so this really doesn't phase me.

Sometimes I think it would be easier to have a visable baby bump that people noticed. That way when dining out my husband wouldn't awkwardly blurt out that I'm pregnant to the waitress when I order ginger ale.

  • Diva cup users, did you have to change sizes after pregnancy? Not for right away use, obviously, but whenever your cycle started normally again.
  • @kvh22 A part of me would feel weird about a stranger commenting on me being pregnant. I guess that assumption might offend me if I wasn't pregnant, but as a FTM it excites me anytime anyone notices that I'm pregnant. I've had several people ask me if I'm pregnant, but they're all coworkers so they notice a change in my stomach.

  • @kvh22 I love that people notice! Random people congratulate me. I'm 18+4 and there's no way I can hide. I'm only 5'3", no torso, all belly and boobs. Women pregnant or with kids always smile and say something. The servers at all my favorite take out places already said something.

  • I give people the side-eye if they comment before like third tri or something. Sometimes I want people to notice (like the yoga teacher who didn't ask if anybody needed adjustments at the beginning of class, or people fighting for seats on the train) and then I'll like pat my belly or push it out or something, but I can't say that has ever worked. People are either sensitive or they're not!

@kristenk727 exactly what I was thinking. @donehue It's a thin line and I feel like people could totally make a comment to someone whose not. The thought of them saying that to someone whose struggling with IF and maybe jsut carrying a little extra weight in their midsection makes me feel a little guilty I was happy.

  • I am SO excited. The hubby turns 40 in June and today I booked a trip to Vegas (we've always wanted to go). It's a surprise, I'm going to put the plane tickets in his bday card. He is going to be so stoked. We really don't have enough people we know in our area to do a surprise party.
I'm a very simple person and haven't really ever done anything like this for him. And his brother might fly out to meet us there- he is still deciding.

I would love suggestions of shows to see in Vegas or tours to go on if anyone has any. We will be there in June (when it's a billion degrees and I'm 33 weeks prego). We aren't party animals but I would love to see a concert or show and I personally want to take a tour to the Hoover dam if we have time.
  • @belmont1785 - you'll love Vegas. I went there for a work trip once, never had an interest and ended up loving it. We went on our honeymoon there. So much to take in - we actually loved vegas during the day almost more than night. Take in a Cirque du solie show for sure, any of them are good. We went to the one in our hotel (aria) and one other, Hoover Dam is pretty cool!!

  • @belmont1785 Vegas is awesome. There is something for everyone there. We went there this past October and had a blast.

Definitely try to get out to Hoover Dam! It's amazing to see and tour. We had a rental car so we just drove ourselves out there and bought a tour once there.

We went to see Britney's show and had a blast. But I unapologeticly adore circa 2000 pop music...

I'm terrified of heights but going up in the high roller, the giant observation wheel, at night was so cool. The city is so glittery.

Just going around to all the casinos and taking in their magnitude and design is fun. Warning though, Vegas is deceptive with distances. Everything is much farther away than it looks. Be prepared to walk a ton. Even just getting through one casino is crazy far.

We didn't really focus on food this trip but my favorite meal this time was at "Yardbird" in the Venitian. And my favorite casino is the Wynn. It's just so freaking pretty.

I wasn't planning on getting a rental car but now I'm thinking I might. Does it make more sense to do uber or taxi? Or get a car? How is parking in General? Crazy expensive?

  • @belmont1785 I highly recommend Cirque du Soleil "O" it's amazing. "Ka" is pretty awesome too.
  • kvh22kvh22 member
@belmont1785 The restaurants are amazing!!! Anything Thomas Keller and Mario Batali are awesome but I've been dying to go to Giada's and a few others too. You should see whose in town when you're going to be there for shows. Things that are permanent are great because it's literally built for it but there's usually a good number of people in town for shorter stints. DH and I saw Ka but we were so tired we didn't enjoy it. It'll be really hot but the pools are awesome, too!

I'd recommend only renting a car for your day trip(s). Cabs to/from the airport should be about $20 (surface streets are usually cheaper although slightly longer than the highway and they charge extra if you use a card). I've heard uber is pretty reasonable and accessible, though. I think a car would be a hassle when cabs and ubers can just drop you off/pick you up at the lobbies of the hotels or the doors closer to the restaurants you want to go to.

DH just went for a bachelor party and they rented cars for 24 hours to go to Zion which he said was awesome.

  • It's been awhile since I've been to Vegas, but isn't there a monorail/team as well for the main part of the strip, like starting at MGM? That could help cut down on some of the walking if you want to go from one end to the other w/o worrying about a car.
  • @belmont1785 I agree with everything that everyone said!  But You HAVE to do the ferris wheel!  I cant remember what its called, but its the tallest in the world.  I hate ferris wheels, and this was so fun!  We did it in the happy hour car (I wasnt pregnant), but just doing a regular one would be amazing.  Its smooth, and you get an amazing view of the strip.

I would also suggest just using uber or taxi to get around the strip.  Its a lot larger than it looks, and depending on where you are staying, you might not want to walk.  I stayed in the Cosmopolitan, and it was close enough to a few places, but walking to the venetian was a mistake.  it was soooo far, and HOT (we were there in july).

Also look up secret information for the hotel you are in.  The Cosmopolitan has secret pizza, it literally has no name, and unless you know it there, you wouldn't find it.

The casinos are a blast, and they try to give you free drinks, if you are making enough noise.

I also suggest buying your own mocktail/cocktail stuff at a close by Walgreens/Cvs and bringing it to your room, and bring a water bottle to the pool filled with them. The drinks of all types are great, but stupid expensive.  DH and I had a small bottle of tequila and margarita mix and drank them on the balcony that our room had.  It was amazing and so much cheaper than the 20 dollar mojito at the pool.

Also if you have never had sprinkles cupcakes, look for them.  They are by the ferris wheel, and the Lynx hotel!  As a 33 week pregnant women, Im sure they will hit the spot!

    Enjoy your trip!

  • @JCPSand2B yes there's a monorail, but it connects the back of the casinos, and it's a solid third of a mile from the monorail to the strip, so it doesn't save much walking. Bring good shoes.

Car traffic is also a bit crazy - lots and lots of stoplights and crosswalks (at least from the car perspective - for a pedestrian, those crosswalks can be frustratingly spaced), so it's not like you move fast down the strip. A good cabbie will get you into the back roads pretty quickly to get you where you need to go.

I freely admit I don't love Vegas - it's cheap to get to, but the entertainments I enjoy (basically, cirque-style shows and nice restaurants) are expensive. Reno is a little less crowded and has the Truckee River to float down, plus great outlets in Sparks next door. However, I LOVED Hoover Dam and highly recommend a tour into the hydro plant and reading up a little on the Art Deco design. I also recommend a stop at the Boulder City Brewing Co on the way in or out, which has good, reasonably priced food as well as tasty beer for your DH.
  • so glad I'm not the only one who is bothered by loud chewers! My boss' jaw pops when she chews, and I cannot be near her when she eats.  When we go out to eat for lunch or something, I cringe the entire time. All of my good friends know that if they're chewing and I glare at them, they need to adjust their chewing haha
@kvh22 My DH is the opposite! I went to a wedding this past weekend (he wasn't able to go because of work), and I told him what dress I was wearing and he suggested I wear the maternity one I just got in because I "need to show off my bump." It's so cute, it's almost like he's so proud of it lol.
As far as random people commenting, I think it's still a little too early for that.  Actually being pregnant, it doesn't bother me because it means I look pregnant and not just fat, like I feel.  But I could see looking like this and being just fat, and then I'd be incredibly hurt and pissed off!

@belmont1785 a rental car isn't necessary. We knew we wanted to get out to see the Hoover dam, valley of fire, and Fremont st/old Vegas. Because of that and our hotel having free parking it made sense for us. I can really see both ways, so whatever would work best for you and fits with how you vacation!

I was so excited to buy some so I turned around, pulled up and started getting my cash out when I realized she was a grown woman - just short. And the costume was a green box for charity. It made her day. Ruined mine.
