So glad they took such good care of your nephew, @NYTino24 ! We transferred my son's care here when he was about 9 months old and I swear they have saved his life many times over since then.
~Mom to an amazing Jan 2011 boy~ ~EDD Nov 18, 2017 with my IUI success story~
I'm a middle school teacher (this year I'm teaching college and career readiness), and I love it! When I was pregnant with DS, I was working in a middle school with a lot of gang violence, and it was kinda scary to break up fights when I was 8 months pregnant. But I loved that school too. This school is a lot safer, and I know that makes my husband a lot happier. So nice to meet all you fantastic ladies! I'm not on the message board as much as I was with DS, but I do pop in from time to time.
I'm a high school science teacher (AP Physics). I really like my job, but I'm currently in graduate school working toward a MS in Educational Psychology (Gifted and Talented specialization). I think it's not in the cards for me to be a SAHM - although I may be able to talk my husband into letting me take a year off from teaching when my degree is done. I'm hoping that would be a great time to transition out of the classroom and work in administration for a district. I'd really love to be a GT specialist or coordinator for a campus, but we'll see what happens
Full time farmer! DD comes with me everywhere on the farm so LO will too! I also recently started a network marketing company and have had huge success the first few months
@heatherdubrow My DD had stage IV Wilms' Tumor at three and my favorite people in the world are Hem/Onc nurses and NICU nurses (my third was born at 26 weeks). Go kid nurses!!! Hardest job ever!
In my former life I was a high school teacher. After we relocaed, I fell into Property managment for vacation homes. At the first of the year I was offered a position in the mortgage business. I LOVE my work! I work super close to home, great hours, and the people I work for and with are already like family. I was nervous to tell them 3 months in I was pregnant but they were all excited. I can do 90% of my work remotely and will most likely work at least part time throughout my "leave".
@cottingham3 I'm so sorry you went through that with your kids. I seriously loved my job and still keep in touch with a lot of the families I cared for. You're one strong mama!
I am a support staff for a day program for adults with IDD. I commute, but in a company van so I don't take my own vehicle. I wanted to be a SAHM but it doesn't seem like that will be an option for me. Luckily, I love what I do!
I was a teacher before I had my son. I taught first grade, second grade at a Spanish immersion school, and I taught k-6 Spanish too. I also have my masters in literacy education, and would love to be a reading teacher at some point in the future!
I'm on a support team for a buyer in a retail regional office. I got lucky to get a position in the wine department. Everyday at work reminds me it's going to be a long pregnancy!
I'm a high school assistant principal at a school about ten minutes from my house. I love my job and am definitely not cut out to be a SAHM. I'll take six weeks off after LO comes, then I'll pay my sister to babysit (she also gets my other two kids to school).
I work as a nurse practitioner in internal medicine full time. I have a 23 month old son and will continue to work when I have my new bundle of joy. Took 10 weeks off with my son. Planning on 12 with the new little one.
I currently work for the USPS and have to drive about 45 minutes to get there but I don't mind the drive or the work. I will, however, be cutting my hours (or maybe quitting) by the time the baby comes. I can tell you this, I will eventually not be able to deliver your precious 50lbs of dog food on a Sunday!
DH is a self taught chef and works at a local restaurant here in Massachusetts.
ETA: I must have blocked out that I am a full time student (blame it on spring break) and I am going for a nursing degree. I'm about to finish my 2nd semester and will become p/t student once baby has arrived. I'm glad the timing for this pregnancy worked out, I didn't want to be 9 months pregnant or going into labor on the day of finals, it would be just my luck too.
Similar to an architect, I work as a liason between the engineers, architects, school staff and communities to design schools, K-12. With a master's in urban planning I've been this field and related jobs for about 12 years. I am most definitely returning to work. It's my thing. I'm going to muddle through maternity leave waiting for a daycare slot to open.
I work in facility maintenance for retail stores. My office is a mess and very stressful - but I bring in bigger bucks than DH does as retail management. He is very passionate about me being a SAHM but I would prefer to still work PT. Since our date is 11/3 I'm thinking I will be off completely during the holidays. My company doesn't qualify for FMLA and they also don't offer PT work or remote (which... Is frustrating since we work remote quite often) so I think I will just try to find an office job or work in fast food or retail to help us have some wiggle room in our budget.
I work as a part time prevention educator at a domestic violence and sexual assault victim services agency about 10 minutes from home. I'm currently pursuing my MSW, and I'm completing an internship at a behavioral health agency for children 35 minus from home. I was a SAHM when DD was born for a few months, and I doubt I'll ever do that again because I love my work.
Im in the military, but do admin-style work and plan on staying in, at least for now. I'm pretty excited that our maternity leave policy got extended since having DD, so with this one I get to stay home longer than 6 weeks. Im also taking night classes and *trying* to get my degree knocked out ASAP.
I had thought about becoming a SAHM with my second child, but we just bought a house, and still have some debt we need to pay off, so I don't think it would be the best timing right now. It doesn't hurt that I do enjoy my job, too.

It's been really fun to read what all of you do for work! I teach psychology at a mostly undergrad university, with a grad program in School Psych. When we started TTC we were trying to aim for a May-July baby because I'm on a 9-month contract, but after having difficulty we just have continued TTC without worrying about work. (I do think I'll be judged for this, since it's common for women around me to have summer babies, but I simply don't care). Unfortunately we don't have any paid time off for maternity, though I can take sick days which I've been hoarding since I started. It's lovely to compare having a child to being sick. Anyway, classes are already scheduled and there's one I need to teach for sure (required for graduation and no one else can teach it), so if I'm going to have to teach that class I think I'll stay full time in Fall and potentially transfer my 2 intro classes to online for the last month of the semester. I've taught them online before and have a good layout. But I'd perhaps go in and teach the higher-level class a few weeks after birth (it's a 3-hr once/week, so there'd maybe be 3-4 classes after I have the LO). STMs - is this crazy to go back soon, even just for a few hours? And I'm curious if there are others either teaching or in school and what your plan is for the Fall semester?
@car1a I work in an academic environment as well, mostly graduate level. I am not faculty, but periodically teach parts of courses. There is one course each semester that I am the only person who can teach and review the assignments for a paticular part of the course. I have no idea yet what I am going to do about the Fall semester, the week that assignment is due is my EDD! I haven't discussed with my boss yet...
I'm a bookkeeper at a private CPA firm. Nice, quite job that's not too stressful save busy season. I commute but it's not bad at all. I'd love to be a SAHM when LO comes but the ability for that to be a reality has yet to be seen. DH and I always talked about home schooling (we're both home schooled but I promise we're fairly normal and considerably well socialized) but he's a social worker which is the field of his heart but not by any definition one of lucrative salary. So we'll see...

I'm a federal probation officer. I plan to take 12 weeks. I never thought I would want to be a SAHM but after having my son in 2015 I would love too. I don't get enough time with and I'm sure it's going to be harder with two. Unfortunately, I worked really hard to get my job and it has a great retirement so I'm not willing to give that up. Also I am the insurance provider for the family so it's not an option. I also teach jazzercise on the side not really for the money but for my sanity.
@jess0211 we have a close EDD! We'll have to keep each other posted with what we decide. I'm trying to consider all my options before talking to anyone at work so I can be prepared in case they want to try to decide for me. I should also note that I run an internship and also a 7 day/week research program, so it's not simple to completely cut out for a period of time which makes me think I should just carry on as much as possible (though I definitely would halt everything if there were issues/complications).
@car1a - I think you can definitely do a 3-4 hour chunk once a week after LO is born. It might feel amazing to get out of the house for a little each week! I'd be more concerned with the online intro classes. Even though you don't have to go anywhere, unless you use a MyLab or LaunchPad type thing that autogrades a lot of stuff, I think you'll get stressed with the work with online classes plus a newborn.
@car1a research is really hard to step away from completely (actually the course I am concerned about is research related!). We'll stay in touch for sure!
I'm a SAHM since I found out I was pregnant with my now 2 year old. My husband is active duty military and we are now in our 3rd location since I stopped working. It's best for my whole family for now.
@lahansen DH actually went to public school for a couple years too! My family home schooled primarily because my dad was in the military and we were constantly moving during the school year. It gave us more flexibility and less disruption to hs.

@kissthesky32 I agree about the online, it sounds easier because there's no travel but it can make you feel like you technically need to be present 24 hr/day. I do use an online learning platform which auto-grades some of the quizzes (m/c), and I've been grading the written assignments for long enough that I'm efficient, but I do worry that it's not going to be in my best interest to have to think about the classes on top of the LO and recovery.
I am self employed as a behavioral therapist for a boy with autism. I have worked with him for the past nine years and just love him and the work. Although I would love to be a SAHM if finances aloud. DH is currently trying for a county job that would allow me to cut back to maybe two or three days a week.
I consider myself a SAHM to all of our LO's, but I do work 1-2 days a week for a few hours as an EMT on an ambulance in a very busy city just outside of Boston. It works for us because it gives me the chance to have adult conversations, help people (which is my passion), and still contribute a little bit of money to our family. Fortunately my husband has a very flexible schedule and my in-laws are really helpful with our kiddos. I'm not sure when I'll go on light duty. With my 5 year old, I worked up until the weekend I gave birth, but I went into preterm labor. With my 7 month old, I was on bedrest around 22 weeks.
You all have such interesting and important jobs! I work 2 minutes from home at a Harley-Davidson dealership. I just changed positions and now am doing title work and other office work. I'm loving it! I plan to work part time after (unpaid) maternity leave, but I should be able to take the baby with me to work most days!

I am an assistant principal for a 7-12 school. We are a state takeover School, meaning that we have been on the failing list for awhile. This is my second year here and I was hired to help bring the school grade up. 100% of my students receive free and reduced lunch and many of them are going to be first generation high school graduates. It's tough work, but I love it. I agree that being a SAHM would be so hard! I'd love to stay home with my DD and this baby, but I feel like the only part of me that stays the same after a baby is my career and I value that! Plus there is no way at all we could afford for me to stay home.
@kschref I am in the same situation! I was an elementary music teacher for 3 years but now I SAH with my 18 month old. I originally thought I'd like to go back to work full time after I'm done having kids and they're all in school, which is still a long way off, but I may be content with subbing or volunteering to get my teacher fix lol. I'm also the youth director at my church along with my husband, so I guess I work part time, although it doesn't feel like it!
It is so cool to see so many careers on here! I'm the IS administrator for large cultural nonprofit, which means I work on our internal intranet and our ticketing system (onsite and online). I've only been in my current position for about six months, but I've been with our organization for 9 years. I've been saving up sick time up for the last 6 years to make my 10-12 weeks of leave paid (got to love nonprofit pay). On the plus side, my org is really family-friendly and is used to working around new parents and extended families. Since 95% of my job can be done offsite at any time of day and we operate 7 days a week, my boss has already said he will do whatever it takes to keep me, even if it means I mostly work from home and only come in 1-2 days a week after LO is here. I also know from experience on the other side that if I have an emergency meeting I can bring LO in and they'll just get spoiled rotten while I am in my meeting. Current plan is to mostly work from home for the first year with DH working from home the 1-2 days a week I need to go into the office. After that, we're looking to utilize the day care at the university where DH works 2-3 days a week and have me work from home for the rest.
Great group of smart women here! I'm a patent attorney in BigLaw. I'm extremely lucky to work for a firm that has a generous maternity leave, 4.5 months paid. I'll also add my vacation time so my total time off will be 5.5 months paid. Most women in my office take off a full 6 months and take the 2 weeks unpaid leave, not sure if I'll do that. I plan to go back to work full time after the leave, I'm hoping that the transition will be okay.
