Home Birth

STM, have any of you had a home birth? What what your experience? I had an uncomplicated hospital birth with DD but and am strongly considering a home birth. There are lots of excellent midwives in my area (lots of plain, Amish around me so home births are very common)

Re: Home Birth

  • FTM here, but some women discussed birth plans here. I can't remember if anyone mentioned home birth.

It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

  • Personally, I have had very complicated births so would not consider a home birth. But I have friends who have done it. As long as it is assisted by a midwife it can be a positive experience. Just not for me.
  • We're planning a home birth this time around. My first was a birth center birth and we're using the same midwife group again.
  • It looks like we are leaning towards a home birth this time. I've had 3very easy uncomplicated hospital births, which were good experiences, but also very expensive and our insurance is horrible. We'd be saving 5-6k out of pocket by not going to the hospital. But I don't want money savings to be the only reason we choose it. We are meeting with a home birth midwife on Friday to see if home birthing and her are a good fit for us. And we are only minutes from the hospital so that makes me feel better.

  • My mother and my future MIL both did not have home births per say but they were at a birthing center and had completely natural births and enjoyed the experience very much. I am planning on having a Home birth also, but what is important to keep in mind is if it is right for you, if you have had complications then try not to although if you have a midwife and something occurs that can be life threatening she can take you to the hospital and vouche for you and you would still have your natural birth if your situation allows, but just maybe not at home. Midwives are very well trained and can usually help many situations that may arise. But as the momma it is important to really be in tune to your senses. You know what your body is saying.
  • I've had some complicated pregnancies and deliveries, so unfortunately, I can't, but if I could, I would LOVE to!!
  • I would LOVE to have a home birth, but the nearest midwife group is 30-45 minutes away. I don't know if that's too far. Plus, I'm concerned because I had to use an oxygen mask while pushing during labor for my 12 mo.
