Re: Weekly Randoms 3/20

  • I created this thread because I wanted to make sure everyone knew that I think my Maltese is allergic to chicken haha. I usually get her Fromm's Four Star which is grain free, usually the salmon or beef flavors depending on what's cheapest on Amazon. It's an expensive food, like $5-6 a pound, but she's small so it's really like $15 a month. Our Sheltie is too large to feed her the same food (it would be way too expensive) so I was going to put both of them on Blue Buffalo Wilderness for small breed. It's grain free but the only flavor in stock at my local store was chicken. My Maltese has had 3 meals of half old food, half new food and has been non stop itching and licking herself. We happen to have a vet appointment for Thursday to discuss possible food allergies. My vet did mention that protein allergies are actually more common than grain allergies and that in dogs, the main symptom for food allergies is itching/licking. I just ordered some new food, Natural Balance Limited Ingredient sweet potato and fish. No chicken or grains. What stinks is that it'll take a week to get here and I don't have a ton of her old food left. We do have wet food that I generally just use to mix in so she'll eat the kibble but it looks like she'll be having that as her main meal for a week. I don't think she'll be complaining though. The wet food is beef but now I wonder if I need to look out for chicken being hidden in the ingredients list if it's not necessarily the main protein.

  • Oh that stinks @slaven ! At least its (hopefully) a simple solution. My dog is SO picky about food, so its good you can change things up a bit without too much of a fuss. My dog has very sensitive skin and can get bacterial infections easily so we have to be really strict about food, treats, and shampoos we use. I feel so bad always having to give him the same things but its better than the welts and sores he used to get (and the vet bills).

  • @ugoglencoco Yes I'm very thankful that her allergies aren't that bad. It's a bit hard because she's only 3.6 lbs full grown so she has to have dry food specifically for small dogs. I soak it in hot water for a minute or so and then usually mix in a tablespoon or so of wet food so she'll eat it. She's also potentially having some teeth pulled. When she was 8 months she got spayed and they pulled 12 puppy teeth that never fell out despite the fact that she had almost all her adult teeth. Fast forward to now at 18 months and she has about 4 premolars that are just now coming in but have stalled and won't come down all the way and she has a lot more tear stains now. Not that the tear stains bother me but it's an indication that there is a lot of pressure which I'm sure isn't comfortable.

On top of that our new rescue Sheltie has heart worms. She's just about done treatment though. I don't know what it is with me and picking out the dogs that end up with expensive bills and problems.

  • I was supposed to wake up early this morning to do my eyebrows and curl my hair but I snoozed for almost an hour. So I pulled my hair into a ponytail and started to curl the ponytail. Got so tired halfway through I almost convinced myself that no one would notice if half my ponytail was curled and half wasn't.  Eyebrows are just going to have to wait another day, or until tonight but I clearly have barely any shame right now so does it really matter? Sooooo sleeeeepy.
  • @ugoglencoco if it makes you feel any better I haphazardly stuck about 15 bobbie pins into my curls until they were all pinned up because I was too lazy to do my hair and I didn't put my makeup on until I got to work.

  • @Roliepoliecoley4 same here! I have zero patience.

@slaven I'm sorry you're still having doggy troubles. It seems like it never ends. I hope you figure out something that works.

Were trying to sell our house next month and yesterday found about 6-8 inches of water in our crawl space. So that's fantastic. Pumping it out now then trying to figure out what's next.
  • @heatherdubrow Ugh. That sucks! We are also putting our house on the market in April and I would lose it if I found water in my basement now.

  • @slaven my cousins small dog is allergic to chicken and grains, he itches himself raw and has digestive issues. They're actually an allergy family,  both her and her daughters have varying degrees of food allergies. So he was definitely rescued by the right family who understood the signs.

We had a play date scheduled at my house this morning and I have been nauseous all morning. Idk if I want to cancel it all together or not. I'm just not feeling social, but I know my friends were excited :-/
  • @slaven so sorry about your dog, that really stinks! It is nice that you can try different mixes though
@heatherdubrow oh nooo, finding water is the worst! I haven't had to deal with it personally because we don't own a house yet but I've seen it be such a headache for my parents.
@ugoglencoco I have really thick crazy eyebrows that I just can't control myself so I try to get them done every two weeks but last time I waited like two months...it was really bad. Trying to keep up with them now but I know it'll get away from me

  • I have like 95% chosen exactly where I want to live in our soon-to-be city based on websites. We're going there in a couple weeks and I am starting to get seriously nervous that it won't be everything I've hyped it up to be in my head and I will have to scramble to find something else. Moving to a place you've never been before is crazy.

I'm WFH today (translation: listening to 50000 conference calls on mute and my input doesn't matter at all), so I'm washing the walls in our master suite and super cleaning our master bathroom. There is some scuzz in one corner of my master shower that I cannot get to go away. It looks like the tiles are discolored, but feels filmy? I've tried scrubbing bubbles, CLR, and just crazy scrubbing and nothing is working. Anyone have a miracle shower tile cleaner?

  • @kissthesky32 have you tried just plain bleach? And this one is weird, but I've used that foam spray oven cleaner before for really tough things, it just melts everything away. I'm amazed scrubbing bubbles didn't get rid of it! I now only use method brand cleaning products since they're non-toxic, my kitty loves to be around when I'm cleaning.

  • I might have to give the oven cleaner thing a try, @DuchessOfCambridge. Thanks! I'm usually a Method brand user too - but this random corner is withstanding everything and it was time to try drastic measures.

  • @kissthesky32 ever heard of something called Barkeeper's Friend? It's a powder that you can get in the cleaning supplies aisle at Walmart. I swear it worked miracles on anything I've tried it on.
  • @BayCamp - I haven't! I'll look for it though! Thanks!

I was just about to suggest this - it's AMAZING.  I would go for the powder and not the one in the bottle (kind of a wet paste) - the powder just works the best.  I clean everything with it!

  • @lahansen I'm so excited to do some projects that are for my own baby. I mostly knit and crochet. I recently got a Cricut so I think I'm going to make some iron-on cut outs for onesies.

@lahansen - I love to knit and have already started a baby blanket (in blue....I'm convinced this baby is a boy...will be my third).  I think we should have a post where people can post what they make!  Would love inspiration from others.

  • @lahansen - I quilt, sew, and crochet. Have made several quilts, rompers, and dresses in the past. For sure going to do some quilts but not sure what else. I have a smocking panel I started for DS and didn't finish so maybe I'll get that done this time around and actually use it in something!

@daisymae6215 @2Dash So jealous of your knitting abilities! I'm a pretty experienced sewer/quilter, but I never got the hang of knitting. I may have to take up crochet though, since there are so many cute baby patterns!

@zigzag8412 I'm sure you could do a diaper bag, as long as you have a good pattern. I've made the two that are in Amy Butler's book "Little Stitches for Little Ones" and I don't remember them being very hard. There are lots online too, just be sure to keep it simple!

@2Dash I would love to see pics of what everyone makes! Please share :)

@kschref Do you have favorite patterns for clothes? I'm hesitant to make any because a) some of the patterns seem so tedious, and b) as a FTM I'm not sure what would be cute/practical/comfortable for real kids.

  • @BayCamp We've been getting our garden going the last couple of weeks too! We also grow a lot of hot peppers and make tons of hot sauce for ourselves and to give away  Over the weekend we got out and planted 5 peach trees... can't wait for them to start producing (in a few years...)

  • @Roliepoliecoley4 I am right there with you!  My husband "joked" last night that I need anger management but I think he was actually serious.   :#

  • One of my favorite shows, Dancing With the Stars, premiered tonight and I keep getting interrupted. Luckily it's recorded, but as it gets later and later, I'm seriously struggling to stay awake through it. And I'm legitimately sad?? Hormones aren't messing around.

  • @lahansen same here with thr peppers and pepper sauce! My DH collects bottles all year so that he can make an give away. We don't drink so he likes to collect liquor bottles from friends to put his creations in! His favorite pepper to eat is cowhorns but we plant a lot of bell pepper and sweet peppers because our kids adore them.

  • @cottingham3 Ooh, I've never had cowhorns, but I'm going to have to find some seed and try them out. Last year we grew some "heatless" habaneros, which were amazing. We mixed them with hot habaneros and hot paper lanterns to make habanero hot sauces that are hot but not face-meltingly hot.

Cowhorns! Yes!!! We planted 10 yesterday. He makes this killer bbq sauce for his restaurant out of them. He is having so much trouble getting them from a produce distributor though, none of them carry them red and ripe, only green. So we are really counting on these plants to do well.

We also have a bed of just habeneros and one of dragons cayennes. Last year we had more variety but since he started selling the sauce at his restaurant we zeroed in on the ones that sold best. The plan is next year to greatly expand the growing operation, but we'll see.
