Let's get a good list going for mamas that want to build a library for their baby! What was your favorite book growing up?
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*
As a young kid, I loved Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. My kindergarten teacher read the Ira and Puff the Magic Dragon books. Now that I know that Puff and Jackie Paper are about not so good things, it feels weird... but I loved when she played that tape! (I think I just aged myself there.)

My 14 month old loves brown bear brown bear what do you see. The greedy python. Don't push the button. I like a bedtime prayer and On the night you were born. She has a great collection of books started since birth any dr. suess or as they get older any of the 5 minute story books with their favorite characters such as Peppa pig blaze and the monster machines or my daughter's favorite bubble guppies.
Yes to Llama Llama and Nelly Gnu and Any Boynton book. I'm a big fan of I'll Love You Forever and On The Night You Were Born (both tearjerkers). I also really like Dinosaurs Wear Underpants, Where The Wild Things Are, and any of the 5 Minute Princess/Superhero/Disney Stories books. Those are what we read before bed every night. Oh! And any Look and Find book gets a lot of use in our house.
My office colleagues threw me a shower and instead of traditional baby gifts they each gave me their fav childhood book to get me start my own library and it was awesome!! Here is a sample of what I got:
1. Dr. Suess - box set with green eggs and ham, red fish blue fish, cat and the hat etc. 2.chika chika boom boom ( one of my sons fav) 3. Ferdinand 4. Giving tree 5. Sandra Boynton box collection 6. Only one you 7. The hungry cattepillar 8. 10 little fingers and 10 little toes 9. I love you forever 10. Sleep tight construction sight
My son's favorites for age "really young" are the Llama llama series and the "how do dinosaurs..." series. He's a little older now and really likes the magic schoolbus books and anything with superheroes in it.
As a working mom I always recommend "oh my baby little one" - about a mama going to work and how she still loves her baby all day and her love stays with him through everything he does at school all day. I *still* cry when we read it, and even though he's 6, he asks for it all the time.

A lot of Sandra Boynton here too. My son can still recite "Happy Hippo, Angry Duck". My kids also loved books where they could touch things on the pages, so things like Pat the Bunny, and the "That's Not My..." series. Currently at 2 and 3 yrs old, they like flap books and we have a lot from Usborne that deal with colors, shapes, numbers, etc. My son's favorite books right now are "Press Here" and the Olivia books.
My kids love Dr. Suess. My older one loves the flat stanley books and I personally really like the usborne books. My cousin had a party recently and I bought "I'm a dirty dinosaur" and "Jonathan and the what if monster" and they are both some of our favorites. Also, the Llama Llama books and we read "Snowmen at night" at least once a week too!

My kids go crazy for the gruffalo and anything by those authors (stick man, the highway rat etc.) We read them over and over. Also Curious George and Spot, Corduroy, Hungry Caterpillar, Little Bear, Frog and Toad, and the Jolly Postman! There are so so many.
Our go to books year one were:
1. Mother Goose
2. Dr. Seuss, we especially liked the ABC book, Mr. Brown can moo, and hop on pop. All three of those have excellent fun rhymes.
3. A book with pictures of babies. The one we have is one from my childhood that's out of print called "funny babies." But when we went to the library these were some of her favorite pick out.
My suggestion isn't a great reading book but they are great playing books! They are called Indestructibles and are "baby books". Your kid can't tear them, they can be wiped down, chewed on. They were my favorite car seat toy. My DD loves books and I could give it to her knowing that she wouldn't ruin it. They are paper thin but I really suggest getting one or two.
DS really loves the Llama Llama books. He is also into the Usborne Books "How to tuck in your sleepy lion" and "How to bathe your little dinosaur". He brings both of them over to me every day and crawls into may lap
I love, love, love books and I am so excited he is finally getting into them. I can't wait until he is a little older. I want "Dragons love tacos" and "The day the crayons quit" for him.
My almost 3 year old is in love with any and all Pete the Cat books. He also likes the Bear on a Bike book and the others in the series....Bear About Town, etc.
And as others have said a huge thumbs up to Llama Llama books!!!
I love the indestructible books! I'll be honest when I got them as a gift I thought it was odd bc they seem so flimsy but once my daughter became a chewer/toddler I realized why they are so great! I tell everyone to get them now.
two books we recieved that I can't read to my daughter without tearing up are "wherever you go" by Pete Zitlow and "on the night you were born" by Nancy Tillman (all of her books are really beautiful). Wherever you go is definitely my favorite right now. I also love doctor Seuss but my daughter doesn't have the patience for them yet.
My oldest daughter always loved goodnight moon. My favorite book to read to my youngest is "Giraffe's Can't Dance." That book has become a go to baby shower gift.
