July 2017 Moms

Any other epileptic moms breastfeeding?

I am pregnant with my first and super excited! I am also epileptic, which means I have special concerns. I was planning on weaning my baby off of the medication by decreasing breast milk and increasing formula over about eight weeks. Any other epileptic moms out there that have dealt with breastfeeding while taking epilepsy medication? I'd love to hear about your experience :-)

Re: Any other epileptic moms breastfeeding?

  • Have you spoken with a physician about that? That sounds more like something a medical professional should answer, rather than a group of internet strangers.

  • @Rae1 I just read that August thread. Eek.
  • @PurplePumpernickel: Don't worry, I am under the care of a neurologist and an OB.  My neurologist is kind of old school and I have mentioned it to him, but I don't think it is his gig and was hoping other epileptic moms might share what type of specialist they saw (if any) and how they figured out what to do.  If I had wanted someone to tell me what I should do, I would have asked that ;) More trying to narrow my focus so I don't go to a bunch of docs that don't really have the answer.  I'm a 34 year old lawyer, not really the type of gal who is going to just do something because some lady on the internet told me to, lol.  Speaking of physicians, I know a gal in a similar circumstance and her docs all had differing opinions.  I would prefer to find the right type of specialist (possibly with the help of the moms here), than to decide which doc I think is correct.
BTW - I love your screen name! :) It makes me want to respond, "Say that ten times fast!"
  • @Rae1 As you can see, I have reason to question if your comment is a dig or an actual question.  I am going to assume you are not being mean and answer honestly, yes. Also, at our last appointment, we found out our little guy is a little bigger than average.  Doc was not willing to move my Aug 1 due date yet, but I have a feeling he won't make it to his due date, let alone beyond that.
Honest question here, because as I mentioned in the thread you refer to, I am seriously struggling with the technological aspect of this forum, how are you able to see something like that?  I literally just found the "Notifications" button today. Props to your skills with this thing! :)
  • @SaphireSweetie88  I assume you are asking because I tried to do the intro in July 2017 from my phone and it didn't work?  I posted about myself at least 3 times in the intro for Aug 2017 before moving over here.  Let me know and I can try again in July 2017. Trying to avoid over posting and getting harassed for it.
  • @opheliza44  I ask you the same.  How do you find these things?  Maybe if I knew how to use this better, I would be less of an oaf and people wouldn't accuse me of not caring about my baby because my post cut off ;) Do you know if there are instructions, tutorial, etc.? I didn't really see anything like that.

    Um, ok, I'll bite.

If you have a clinical diagnosis of epilepsy,  you must know that there is a large number of antiepileptic medications available that needs to be tailored to your specific case by an experienced epileptologist (subspecialty of neurology). Each medication (or combination of medications) is very different from one another in terms of side effect profiles. In particular with regards to breastfeeding, but more importantly with regards to pregnancy and effects on the unborn baby. Since you are currently 20+ weeks pregnant, I very much hope that this is something you discussed with your neurologist. It all depends on what class your particular medication is considered.

There is no blanket type answer to your question. The specialists you should be seeing are an epileptologist and potentially a MFM since epilepsy is considered high risk in certain circumstances. If you don't like your doctor, find one you like and are willing to trust. Are you looking for recommendations for doctors? That depends on your area.

  • @oheliza44 was asking who you were because you have never posted in our group before, haven't into'd or participated here, yet you want us to be your personal google. That's not how it works. We have all been here getting to know each other and supporting each other since November. If you saw a group of pregnant friends talking in the real world, would you waltz up to them just ask them a random question you want answered?? No. Drive-by question posts are frowned upon for this reason.

If you plan to stick around, I would suggest reading the "read this first" thread that is pinned at the top and doing an introduction post in the intros thread (also pinned).

This. Also OP no one accused you of not caring about your baby. Frankly, I'm not sure how you got that from any of our responses.

To directly answer your question once you post anyone can go back and review your post history, no matter what board it was posted on. Since we've had issues with random people asking blanket questions across multiple boards to see who 'bites' it is common for members to check post history. This also gives us an idea of how active you've been on a particular month board.

@Rae1 gave you a great explanation of how our board works and why these types of posts are discouraged. This is a great community- I hope you will get a feel for how the board works, post more, and get to know us all so we can also get to know you.
  • @oheliza44 I think her reference to not caring about her baby is from the August thread, not this one.

  • You are correct, I was referring to Aug 2017 post.  Since you can go back and see my history, it probably shows the 3 times I introduced myself there, and as I explained, I tried here, but it apparently didn't work.  Did read the rules and attempting to follow, but then my post didn't work.  I feel nothing but unwelcome here.  I don't want anyone to be my own personal google.  I was hoping too find any mom that can relate and apparently have found none.  I haven't posted here recently because of the Aug 2017 experience and don't worry, I won't post here at all anymore.  Hope your babies are doing great! Mine is and I couldn't be happier.  Clearly this is a place for women to feel some sort of superiority.  Not one single response to my actual question, other than someone doubting I actually have epilepsy.

Maybe because nobody has been in a similar circumstance? which you would probably know if you would get to know us. But, okay.
