Re: April IVF

  • 1. How did you and your SO meet? Was it love at first sight?

We met at a mutual friend's going away party in 2006 and were definitely attracted to each other right away, but he is five years younger than me, so I kinda wrote him off. We did start hanging out and casually dating, but then I broke it off to date someone who "looked better on paper" as DH now explains it. That ended quickly and I went back to DH and we started dated again, only for me to break up with him again because I could tell he was serious about me and I was not. Two months later I realized how stupid I was being and went back... head over heels, heart in my hands.

    2. What's your favorite way to spend downtime/alone time?

I love to turn Pandora on and read - not always books, more long form journalism than anything. I also love to watch Say Yes to the Dress or any Dateline/48 Hours/20/20 type show when DH is away.

    3. What's your favorite season and why?

I heart SPRING! I live on the coast of SE Georgia, so our winter isn't much. In fact, we've been in full spring bloom mode for a week or two already and I couldn't be more excited!

  • @fivetimesnoluck I love Dateline and 20/20 type shows as well. I watch a lot of Investigative Discovery.

    1. How did you and your SO meet? Was it love at first sight? We met online because we both post on the same message board. I wouldn't day love at first sight, we chatted for a few months and both thought we 'd just be good friends, but we really hit it off when we met.

    2. What's your favorite way to spend downtime/alone time?  I love getting wrapped up in a good series on Netflix or Showtime and cuddling with my dogs.  Currently I'm binge watching The Affair. Once I'm done with that I am going to start Californication.

    3. What's your favorite season and why? I love fall. I live in South Louisiana so we don't have long seasons other than summer. But for like a month we get beautiful fall weather.

  • @fivetimesnoluck I like this game! I also enjoy a good Dateline episode.
    1. How did you and your SO meet? We met at a fraternity party and it was love at first sight.  I met him when I was 19 and when he was 21...he asked me to marry him eight months later and I married him almost one year after the day we met.  Today we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary ;)

    2. What's your favorite way to spend downtime/alone time?  I love reading and binge watching terrible TV.  I also love the Affair and am currently watching Prison Break.

    3. What's your favorite season and why? I love fall. I love the weather getting crisp and the leaves on the ground in the Northeast.  Halloween is my favorite holiday.

    Good luck with everyone.

    1. How did you and your SO meet? Was it love at first sight?

We met online (okcupid) two years and two months ago - he was one of three really good guys I met in my first week on there.  I don't know about love at first sight, but he's much more handsome than his profile pics and he really made me laugh.  Sometimes I feel like my primary utility to him is being cute - totally surprised me when he asked me to marry him as we'd never really discussed it before.

    2. What's your favorite way to spend downtime/alone time?

This is a good question as sadly I spend a lot of time worrying and googling about this infertility business lately.  After ER for my first IVF, I found the Good Wife on Amazon so just started watching it as a brainless escape - it's not even that good, but I didn't realize that there were seven seasons of it.  Otherwise, I do quite enjoy napping :)

    3. What's your favorite season and why?

I'm going to go with winter since winters in Los Angeles hardly qualify and I can still escape to the mountains for some real winter (like this weekend to ski!).

    -----

I'm going in for blood work to confirm ovulation on Monday and may start lupron suppression on Tuesday (meds arriving that night) - I hope it goes quickly (and doesn't oversuppress me) based on what I've heard about it.  I expect to start stims again during the last week of the month.

Hope you're all enjoying your weekends!

@daisy222 Just to be clear on the fertility yoga thing - it's not recommended to do it *while* stimming (a fair amount of twisting in some phases).   I kind of suspected it wasn't a good idea, but emailed the people who made the DVD I have and confirmed it.

  • Oh, yes, this is a good idea! I have enjoyed reading everyone's answers

    1. How did you and your SO meet? Was it love at first sight?

At a party 11 years ago, very boring... In fact, this story shows how boring we are some times, haha. We were at this small party, and everyone else was leaving to go into the city to go dancing around 9 or 10 PM, and that is not my thing most of the time. So I was headed home, and I noticed one other guy was leaving too, and he was cute (and not into staying up late). Anyways, we were headed the same way walking home and talked, and then later I emailed him and we went on a date the next week. Gosh that is a lame story :p  But yes, mostly <3 at first sight!

    2. What's your favorite way to spend downtime/alone time?

I like to go on walks and listen to podcasts. I like to cook, and in the summer I love to garden. Realistically, since the election I have spent way too much time reading twitter and news. Not good for my goal of remaining calm and peaceful.

    3. What's your favorite season and why?

Definitely summer!  Here in Colorado, summer is glorious (hot, but not crazy hot like some places).  And you can escape to the mountains to cool off. Also I teach at a university and so while I do other jobs in the summer and am not totally off, it is nice to have a break from the students.

  • @fivetimesnoluck How fun that your office closes for St Patrick's Day!

I have no plans, but the college freshman I teach (at 3 pm on Friday) probably do and it will be a sparsely attended class with short attention spans....

I imagine the process of choosing a egg donor is difficult! How many options are you presented with? Dozens? Hundreds? Thousands?

  • @Daisy22 ummm yeah, I am betting your Friday class will be pretty quiet. I am just hoping the weather gets over this cold snap before we hit the parade route! (It's supposed to be in the 40s that morning.)

And I don't think your story is boring... I think it's really sweet that you could tell y'all have similar tastes/styles - and obviously you were right! I love love.

Choosing a donor is a bizarre process, but so is all of this, right?!

We are pursuing a donor through My Egg Bank, which offers frozen eggs in lots of six. They have an online database and once you are registered (though your clinic) you can access full profiles, including photos of the donor as a baby/child. When I search, typically the only filter I use initially is "Caucasian" and there are about 40 available donors. From there, it's really preferences. Educational attainment, family medical history, genetic profile, reasons for donating - all that kind of info is available to you. DH and I have selected 8 "favorites" and plan to make a final decision this week.

  • @michsanc Welcome!

@laurad75 Thank gosh it's not Monday!!  I also have been watching Big Little Lies. It's a really good show and I love the sound track. Makes me want to vacation there.

I received all my meds yesterday. Holy cow there are a lot of needles. Lol.
  • I also got my meds (stim meds + fresh transfer meds) a few days back. Such a giant pile. So weird to think that all of those will be in my body within the next month.

I am also having issues with my clinic sending us the wrong bills/forms and it is not what I want to deal with right now. For example, they have sent several bills, consent forms, and emails talking about IVF w/ CCS, which we are not doing. The doctor says he doesn't know why this keeps happening. Also, he is very nicely letting us pay 2016 prices because we started this whole IVF process back in Nov., but the financial office people won't understand this and so keep using the 2017 price list.  ARGGG.

  • @mandasand - I am happy to share! No shame in my game.

I saw your update on another board yesterday, and just want to say I am sorry that your cycle ended the way it did. I'm just sorry. This sucks.

The lot of eggs cost $11,000. You receive six, but if there are more available, you have an option to purchase more individually. Because I am doing my transfer at an "affiliated" center, they guarantee that I will have 4 survive the thaw. They do not guarantee any particular number of embryos.

We are paying all out of pocket, so in addition to our own savings, we have had some fundraiser type stuff - had a huge garage sale that friends and family donated to and some of my closest family and friends have contributed to our baby fund, which has been a huge help, because I don't want to go too deep into debt. We expect everything to total around $19,000 and we already have over $12k, so I feel pretty good!

Got a bunch of my meds yesterday and was thrilled they were less than $100, but it didn't include the PIO, so I know that will be high, but the others were manageable.

I am happy to answer any questions about the process I am going through. There's not much info here on 3rd party reproduction, but there are a couple of active boards on Baby Center if you want to poke around over there too.

You're in my thoughts. I am wishing you comfort as you figure out next steps. xo.

  • @artemis618 I've never tried down reg. I'm afraid to really. I just got a lot less eggs with lupron and just feel I was suppressed too much. So this cycle is a estrogen priming antagonist. I'm on day 1 of my break cycle now. 12 to 0 is rough I am sorry :( I am waiting to see if I have a normal or not. My insurance covers partial of 4. It's still $10k a pop though so it's not like I've got 4 full ivfs covered. But it is something. Better than nothing! My friend gets 4 covered at 100% including meds (mine doesn't cover meds at all)- makes me wish I was employed by her union! Best of luck!

  • How did we meet? We met at work and both have a math degree so 2 needs lol

My favorite way to spend downtime is either in the tub with a good book or watching Golden Girls lol

My favorite season is summer! I hate the cold!

AFM, I got our meds in the mail today ( 18 pound shipment) though the PIO needles and sryinges were missing. I start stims (Follistim and Menopur) and Lovenox tomorrow. Eek!
  • @rainbowwishes5 Thanks for your response.  Was it microsose lupron that you did for this last cycle?  I just started lupron (10 units) for suppression (that's down regulation, right?) last night (baseline u/s scheduled for next Thursday).  I'm also afraid of oversuppression (at least I didn't do OCP going into it), but wanted to try something different.  I actually want to ask my Dr. what the threshold for converting to IUI for me (given my age and what we saw of my egg quality from last round) would be in case I only get a few, since PGS was really the whole point of our going straight to IVF and it doesn't really look like we'll ever get there.  If that happens (and maybe even if not) we'll probably go meet with a couple of other REs.

As I was reading, I thought to myself "who gets IVF cycles 100% covered?" till I saw that your friend does, which is amazing.  Hopefully she won't need all of them.  I do feel lucky I have any coverage at all.  My DH has been talking about getting a new job since I've known him (and may FINALLY be getting more serious about it).  I told him not to accept anyone's offer without first checking their medical plan's infertility coverage!  But at my age it may be moot sooner than later.

I'm sorry that you got fewer with the last protocol, but fingers crossed for a normal (when do you expect to find out?) and that the EPP works out better for you!

@daisy222 I feel you on the billing frustration.  Earlier this week I saw an EOB for my hysteroscopy online, well actually for the anesthesia - the anesthesia wasn't covered at all (even though prior authorization for the procedure itself had been granted - I *think* the story is that it was improperly Then the next day I got a phone call about other charges from that day that they didn't even bother submitting to insurance, while the hospital and physician billing are separate departments.  Talk about not conducive to reducing stress.

@laurad75 and @MMD1986. I may have to check out Big Little Lies - which probably means it's nearly time for me to get Apple TV.  DH and I attempted cord cutting when moved in December - I have an HBO Go login, but GOT is also right around the corner!

  • @artemis618 You should totally watch Big Little Lies. It's a mini series so won't take up too much time. I think there will only be 7 episodes.

On another note, do any of you have seasonal allergies? If so, what do you take? Mine have been so awful the last few weeks, but I'm not sure if allergy medications are OK while prepping and going through IVF. I can call and ask my nurse but thought yall might have some good insight as well.
  • Howdy all! Just received word today on the review of our last cycle retrieval and recommendations on the next one.  To catch you up from the last time I posted with only 3 of our 11 mature eggs fertilizing and the rough 5 day wait to see if anything would be able to get to biopsy stage.... We had 1! They are batch saving the test cells from that one, froze it and will wait for what we get from this next retrieval cycle. FX for more fertilized than this last time.

Nurse called this morning and it seems when the team reviewed our cycle results, the only recommended change is to do ICSI this round.  They thought my aggressive antagonist protocol got good results (24 follies, odd that only 13 retrieved, but of the 13, 11 were mature) and might just need that push to have a higher number of fertilized to grow out to 5 days and test.

Being fully OOP totally stinks, and I find myself very frustrated that there is such a wide variety of takes on infertility coverage.  I would think they would want more babies (however they were made) so they could up premiums to get more $$ from us in the long run, right??? Ugh, anyway. Luckily, hubs and I both had good years at our jobs and are able to put our bonuses into this second cycle. Who needs vacations, right?

So, I got AF 5 days post retrieval, and since they are putting me on the Climara patch protocol again, I am in my prep month already. I test for surge on the 22nd (10 days after AF D1) then 10 post surge start patch/shots.

Anyone else on/been on this protocol?  I was really nervous about it in my first cycle considering my dosages were big and my team called it a 'very aggressive protocol', but it wasn't bad at all and I am so happy they aren't changing me to something entirely different!
  • @MMD1986 Wait what?  Only 7 episodes?  That's devastating.  I am going to read the book too and the author has a few more that have been very popular so maybe I'll find a few good summer reads.  I need a break from reading about IF!

@cmiller73 We didn't change our protocol for round 2 either.  I asked if we should and my RE said it was already rather aggressive so our results may not improve with just a change.  GL to you this cycle!

  • Hello all! Just joining in for my first round of IVF, with egg retrieval to be in mid-April, so I think I go here? I started BCP Monday and my injectables are supposed to arrive today so it's feeling real now that I've taken the plunge, so to speak. I've been posting on the January and February IUI threads and am also active in the TTC Over 35. Good luck to everyone!
  • @laurad75 the book is really good. I started another book by the same author but never finished. Not because it wasn't good, I just don't read enough. Maybe we could do an April IVF book club or something.

    @Momifbysea welcome!
  • @artemis618 yes micro dose was the last but I am actually checking in w my RE to see if I should do it again just because I had less eggs BUT the same # (2) made it to blast ABD were of higher quality and also we just found out that they are both PGS normal boys! So now I want another think about this....

My my friend probably won't need another - she got a ton of eggs and blasts.

    yes! Ask abt coverage first!

  • @MMD1986 I asked RE about allergy meds bc mine became unbearable. She said Zyrtec is fine up until transfer.  We are doing a FET (hopefully) so I'm not sure if that matters.  Hope you feel better

  • Thank you @Marley629. I was taking generic Claritin which I think is similar. I think I'm going to try the local honey route. I've heard that helps.
  • @rainbowwishes5 Yay for your PGS-normals!  I'd certainly take quality over quantity (if I could have either) :)

@MMD1986 I'd be in for book club - anything to stop me from googling and take my mind off of this stuff!

  • Great. That's two in. Anyone else want to join? Or recommend a book?
  • I would be up for a book club of sorts! Something relatively easy to read. My last book club primarily read really dense non-fiction, which I don't think I could handle right now....

Me: 34 ("unexplained IF"), DH: 40 (he is fine!), Married since 2013, 2 cats :)

    TTC since Aug 2014

May 2016: laproscopy, found & removed moderate (stage III) endo (largest growth was on R ovary)

    Summer/Fall 2016: 3x IUI w/ clomid & trigger shot, 3x BFN

Jan 2017: 2 months of lupron depot to quiet endo (ugh). Done!

    March 2017: IVF #1 (antagonist) Cancelled/converted to IUI #4 on 3/31/17, CP :/

May 2017: IVF #1, try 2 (Lupron added). ER 5/23 (14 retrieved, 11 mature, 10 fertilized, 3 blasts frozen, 2 PGS normal). FET in late July!

  • @MMD1986 I'd def be in for a book club! I agree with a fiction or light read, at least for the first book!

we got our PGS results back from February's cycle and we have two healthy embryos.  We are all set to start another retrieval cycle with my next CD1 which should be around April 7th

  • @Marley629 congrats on 2 healthy embryos! That's so exciting! I have a newbie question, is it standard that they would do another retrieval if you have 2 healthy ones? Like is there a minimum they're looking for before a transfer? I'm still on bcp, just starting this process, so bear with me...
  • @Momifbysea 1 is the minimum. Other than that you can bank. I transferred 2 in January. You can guess how that went. So then I had ER #2 in March- banked 2 and now ER #3 in April to hopefully bank 1 more normal. Then I will either do my last ER #4 or move on to going through them in FETs. Some people walk away from 1 ER with several normals. If you do you will probably never need another ER. Other people aren't as lucky and need to go through several. It just depends.

That's a good question!  I think if I were younger and didn't have DOR, we would have moved right into a transfer cycle.  Being that they pushed me with max doses of meds to get the two that we did get, the RE encouraged another retrieval cycle before a transfer as she feels strongly about it being a "numbers" game.

  • @rainbowwishes5 thanks and I hope this is it for you! I realize that at my age I'll be lucky with one normal. @Marley629 that makes sense about the numbers game. I'm wondering if my AFC would lend any kind of help to projecting how well the drugs work as far as number of follicles. I know my RE was happy with my count (9) "for my age" but still, it's hard to know, since like you said it's a numbers game plus I realize with AMA comes a greater percentage of abnormal eggs.
