Questions about biopsy

The urology specialist told my DH that everything looked normal in his bloodwork and other samples. He sent off one more vial of blood to get tested and has taken an additional sperm sample, even though the last two have shown a zero count. The important thing is that the doc has scheduled a biopsy for DH for the end of March (yay, more waiting), I assume to see if there are sperm in the testes. (I really wish I could be there at appointments to hear more directly from the doc!)

Has anyone's DH ever gotten a biopsy done? What is the process like? Should I expect DH to be sore afterward? How long did it take you to get your results? I know the biopsy will give us our closest chance for answers at this point, but I don't like that I have to wait another month. Meh.

I don't know anything about the biopsy, but wanted to say, I've never seen a better use of "Nevertheless, she persisted" than in your siggy.  Good luck, @AlohaKumu

My husband had a biopsy since he also had zero sperm but bloodwork looked normal. We knew it was most likely blocked vas deferens from a surgery he had as an infant. It won’t be pleasant for your husband since they will have to stick needles in his testicles but you should have results the same day if they are just looking for sperm. The procedure isn’t very long so that is good but hubby will be sore for a few days. Just tell him what our urologist told my husband and thats what he has to go through is much easier than what us ladies have to do during IVF and pregnancy. Haha! In my case they were able to find lots of good sperm to freeze which is great but they did warn us aspirated sperm doesn’t freeze as well as ejaculated sperm so now he might need to done all over again the day of my egg retrieval if it doesn’t thaw well. Just another thing to add to the stress of it all. GL to you and your husband!

Thank you so much @HottLemonade2886. I figured it wouldn't be a very pleasant experience, so I'll be sure to be mindful of his soreness. I'm thrilled to know that we should have results quickly the day of the testing! That's also good to know that we may have to do another retrieval if we have to go to IVF route, as long as they find that he has sperm. I really appreciate all the information.

Yes if your only option is aspirated sperm there is a high chance that your only option is IVF with ICSI.

Also very good to know. At least I'll be mentally prepared for that to be on the horizon, depending on our options. I wish you the best of luck on your IVF journey, @HottLemonade2886!

We didn't have to have this, but our good friends did at our same RE 8 years ago. The cutest thing they said was, they actually had to have their moms in on the process, because they both got conscious sedation the same day and neither could drive the other. So, right after the semen aspiration, they got a ride to the egg retrieval! Good news is, it worked with a fresh sample and fresh day 5 transfer!

We haven't had the biopsy, but that is a huge step!  Very exciting!  What day is his procedure?

I was talking with someone who said that her H got 6 vials!!!  And they just used one vial per ivf cycle, so they expect to have plenty for future cycles just from the one biopsy.  There are so many variables though, it really depends and every situation is different.  Fx it goes smoothly for him!

@BusinessWife - DH had one more "cup test" this morning to make sure there aren't any stray swimmers, but his doc ended up canceling the biopsy for the end of the month since he wants to get us started with the fertility center right away now that we have the diagnosis. I'm sure they will reschedule a biopsy at the fertility center to double check before we start the procedures. That would be AMAZING if we got 6 vials.

@HottLemonade2886 was totally right. Our only option is IVF with ICSI, but the doc is optimistic.
