1 Hour Glucose test

With my last pregnancy, I did a two or three-hour test and fasted prior to. This time around my doctor is having me do a 1-hour test with no fasting. Is this normal???? Anyone else had the 1-hour glucose test?

Re: 1 Hour Glucose test

  • Yes this is normal. Usually you only do the longer test if you fail the 1-hour test.

  • "Testing for gestational diabetes is usually done between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. However, testing may be done earlier in the pregnancy if you have risk factors for gestational diabetes.

On the day of the screening test, you can eat and drink normally. You will be given 50 grams of glucose, usually in the form of a specially formulated orange or cola drink. You should drink the whole amount within a few minutes. One hour later, you will have a blood test to measure your blood sugar level.

If your blood sugar level is normal, no other tests are done."

  • This just reminded me that I have to book that test;  even though it reminds me of childhood with the old school McDonald's orange drinks I'm still not looking forward to it!
  • I have mine a week from today - boo

  • Mine is tomorrow morning. Is it basically like drinking grenadine??  :/
  • @lanie1000 It was more like the 90's hi-c, but less tasty.  Mine was fruit punch, not orange, but it was not my favorite drink in the world.
  • Thanks @chiquita928! I feel a little better now.
  • @lanie1000 I thought it was like a melted popsicle!
  • Thank you to those of you that were helpful, I really appreciate it. I found conflicting info online.

  • I was given my orange drink to take home today. I have to wait a few weeks before drinking it and then go in for the blood draw an hour later. My instructions say don't eat after drinking it, but fasting before drinking is not required. Not stoked to down this...

Try refrigerating it- was easier for me that way!

You're lucky! I had to sit in a LabCorp waiting room and drink it within 5 mins (they sat there and timed me) then couldn't go to the bathroom or do anything for that hour until they called me back to take my blood. Then I was 1 pt above normal so I had to go back for the 3 hr which was way worse and everything was fine.
  • yes!! @cielaw89 I totally agree with @JmUDuuuukes 07 suggestion of getting that bad boy as cold as possible. I did mine in my OBs office at room temperature and it brought on a strong wave of nausea.

I have to wait until Monday to get my results though. I thought it would be much quicker. Boo.
  • @JmUDuuuukes 07 @lanie1000 ill refrigerate it then! Whatever will make this easier to drink haha. It looks like Gatorade but I know it's not gonna taste like it! Definitely don't want the nausea. One of the warnings even says it may cause fainting!

@nktrodden826 there was no direction about using the bathroom after drinking it, I should probably ask about that before I do this then, right? I have Kaiser so they told me to drink it within 10 mins then go to the nearest Kaiser Lab and tell them the time i finished the drink and get the blood draw done within that hour.
  • @cielaw89 meh.. you could. They were worried about people vomiting or eating in there which would skew the results. I had to pee- because I just chugged this juice drink and she said one of their techs would have to go in with me, facing the other direction, just to make sure. So I don't think you need to!
  • I guess it depends on where you go. I was allowed to pee. I was also trusted (ie, no one had to go in the bathroom with me) I doubt Kaiser would follow you in the bathroom. For my 3 hour test I walked back to my office in between each draw and no one was watching me there. I can't believe places are like that.
  • I'm shocked that someone had to follow you into the bathroom as well! What would be gained by "cheating"?? It's a diagnostic test to keep you and your baby as healthy and safe as possible, not a drug test with legal consequences if you don't "pass". I think I would seriously take issue if they tried to tell me they had to send someone in to monitor me emptying my bladder.

Thank you for putting into words exactly what I was thinking but couldn't come up with the right words. It's crazy to me.

I agree that's a little bit nuts. But, when I did the 3 hour test, I went to a lab that primarily does drug screenings for employment (the 1-hour was in my doctor's office). So I could see how it might just be part of their protocol, and maybe the techs aren't well-trained enough or management isn't trusting enough to let them distinguish between who needs an escort to the bathroom and who doesn't.

@cielaw89 for the 1-hour test, my doctor specifically said it's ok to pee after I drink it. She said it's a question lots of women ask.
