Re: Weekly Randoms - Week of 3/13

  • I'm prepping for the snow! Who knows how much we'll actually get, but DH is thinking of inviting a friend for a snow-in sleep-over *eyeroll* men.

Do any of you ladies get subscription boxes? There are so many out there. Makeup boxes, period boxes, dog boxes, clothing boxes, etc. Have you tried any out? What are your favorites?
  • Stop it with the man sleep over hahahahaha

I've only done blue apron if that counts. Loved it! Might start that back up again soon actually
  • Loading the player...
  • @50Wife Blue apron totally counts! I was curious about those kinds of boxes, but I'm such a picky eater, I'm worried I won't like anything. What's it like?

And don't even get me started on the man sleep over lol I kinda get it because friend doesn't have a car/license, so it's difficult taking him back and forth. They stay up so late, he ends up crashing at our place often. But planning on it and having me go out to buy snacks? Taking it a bit far in my opinion
  • @LoveInDC snacks too?? This is great!  Well, it's great bc it's your husband and not mine but it sounds like something mine would do

i loved blue apron. Never had a meal we hated...some of the meals I wasn't necessarily looking forward to ended up being some of my favorite.
It's slightly adventurous but nothing crazy at all! We aren't very picky eaters (I just don't like most fish) but we've always loved everything sent. They do lots of seasonal stuff so when we did it, we had lots of sweet potato, collards, and kale as sides. I've made a few ramen bowls, gnocchi, pasta, steaks, chicken, Stromboli. So all familiar recipes, just some of the spices used are a bit different.
I loved just having the right amount of everything and not needing to buy a jar of hoisin to use 1 tablespoon and the same with spices and herbs.
I think you can check out previous menus on their website. Aaaaaaand finally-if you know anyone who already uses blue apron, they send you codes for free boxes to let your friends try so ask around and get a code for a totally free box!

@LoveInDC I am obsessed with blue apron!! My hubs and I have been using it for about 7 months and have no plans to stop anytime soon. I'd definitely recommend it.  i have to agree with you @50Wife that there have been a few meals I thought were going to be blah and I ended up loving them!! We made a binder of all the recipes and have remade a few of our favorites.

everything is fresh and the directions are easy to follow...although we always seem to go over the alleged cook time. I feel like they overestimate our skills in that area!

**Edited autocorrect, got so excited to type about blue apron that I didn't notice!
  • I tried Blue Apron (twice) and I loved it but it was a fight to get DH to eat anything. He is such a picky eater when it comes to anything being remotely healthy. I also used to do stitch fix pretty regularly and loved it! Then I got a couple bad boxes in a row and started seeing people with the same clothes so I gave up..

In other randomness, I just had my yearly performance review for work and one of my areas of improvement are that I don't say hi enough to people. What? My boss actually said something along the lines of I "pay favorites and only socialize with my friends when everyone wants a piece of MrsMiller." Major eye-roll. Two years ago my area of improvement was I socialize too much at the office.

@LoveInDC jumping in on the blue apron bandwagon! We did it for about 6 months and I stopped it after the holidays because 1) it wasn't always that healthy and 2) I windered whether it might have contributed to my spotting issues because at least one recipe a week would have soy sauce, hoisin, etc. I really did enjoy it though! And I agree with @MrsMiller8588 that it takes longer than stated to cook.

Eta: @MrsMiller8588 I finally got around to sending you some suggestions for your Kauai trip. Check your inbox! Oh, and I forgot to mention that we used the Hawaii revealed Kauai guidebook and I would really recommend it!

  • @LoveInDC I actually just signed up for my first stitch fix after seeing you post about it. I've been considering it for a while and have gotten mixed reviews from others. I decided to just give it a try since you've been so positive about it.

I did a bark box once for my dogs, but they (we) weren't that thrilled so didn't do it again.

  • I am a whore for makeup, hair product, skincare, etc. so I have a few subscriptions.  I do Birchbox, ipsy, and TestTube.  Most people haven't heard of TestTube but their samples are huge and usually pretty great.

I've tried Stitch Fix and Trunk Club for clothes but didn't love either of them, but I have a hard body type to dress since I am so short!

@LoveInDC I had birch box for a long time and loved it. I stopped getting it, becasue after a couple of years the samples started to get samey. I found some products that I really love and still order though!

  • I love hearing about all your boxes!

@Piccola1988 - How tall are you? I'm 5'1 and I haven't had any trouble with Stitch Fix. Their petites always hit me perfectly. I got 6 months of birtchbox for Christmas, but I'm looking and I think I might enjoy ipsy more. Thoughts?
  • I get the Sephora Play box and it's amazing. I just got my March one today!

  • @LoveinDC - We did Home Chef for a while (I actually want to set it back up), which is basically the same thing as Blue Apron, but I picked HC instead for a few reasons.  1) It's super easy to skip weeks with HC, so if you want to do every other week, or just not get a delivery for a week for any reason it's very easy to turn off without messing up the rest of your shipments.  2) Their minimum number of meals per order is smaller (4 instead of 6 total).  We always did 6 because then shipping was free, but it was nice to have the option.  3) Speaking of options - you actually get to pick from a list of like 8-10 choices each week.  They make default selections for you, but you can easily change the defaults to other things that look more appealing.  4) It's slightly cheaper than some of the other options out there.  5) Last, it's near us, so it made more sense than shipping something across country.

As far as typical subscription boxes go, I get the Yuzen box and I am completely in LOVE with it!  It works well for me because it's quarterly instead of monthly, which is nice because I don't go through stuff that quickly and it keeps it from stacking up.  Yuzen is primarily health and skincare products (with a snack in each box) and they focus on natural, organic, sustainably sourced products.  They also tend to include products from a decent number of smaller, local companies in each box.  The boxes are always a great value, I have loved most of the products I've received, and a lot of the companies I would've never found if not for the box.
  • @LoveInDC I get Ipsy (makeup) and FabFitFun. I like the Ipsy because it gives me a chance to try things out and if I hate it I haven't wasted a butt ton of money on it. The FFF is hit or miss for me so far. LOVED the fall box! Blanket scarf, eye shadow pallet, Toe Sox and an awesome reusable coffee cup (plus some other stuff) all for $50! The winter box was meh for me. Still cool stuff but not as much fun as the fall box.

  • We've tried Blue Apron and Plated -- both food boxes.  Currently using Plated over Blue Apron -- my wife is a picky eater and some of the BA meals were a bit too adventurous for her.  Really liking Plated though!  Ingredients are still fresh and delicious, just not as weird.  Meals are easy to make too!

I also used IPSY for a while - the makeup subscription box.  I enjoyed it but didn't end up using most of what I'd get, so I didn't feel it was worth it in the end.

We're prepping for the snow here in NYC area too.  Stay warm!!

My wife and I have conceived a babe with my body and frozen donor sperm through IUI, with medication support (clomid, ovidrel, and injections of progesterone)

    IUI #1, #2, and #3: Dec 2017, Jan 2018, and Feb 2018 - all BFN
HSG Test: April 2018 - all clear!
    IUI #4: April 15/16, 2018 - BFP!! EDD: Jan 7, 2019

  • I used to do a produce subscription - it was all organic, as local as possible, and you could choose veggie, fruit or mixed, as well as add on different items (eggs, cheese, flowers, etc.). I loved it and the only reason I stopped was that I moved away from that city.
  • I had no idea "boxes" were so popular!!

  • I do the Rachel Zoe Box of Style. It's every 3 months and $100, but you get like $400 worth of stuff. Makeup, jewelry, face products, clothes, purses, etc. it's so amazing and I love it. It's basically like Christmas every time I get one.
Here's a pic from Instagram (not my account) on the Spring box that just arrive so last week.
  • Im also storm prepping in the NYC area. I'm so mad about this snow storm. I'm more pissed because DH is being forced to go into work for a lunatic client that I can almost guarantee won't make it themselves. Cuomo has already enacted a state of emergency starting at midnight. I don't understand why people still insist on having meetings IN A BLIZZARD. Just freaking reschedule it and DONT endanger the lives of your staff and the staff of the hotel! /rant.

  • I'm so thrilled we have a snow day. I need a day off. Between DH being frustrating (and tomorrow should be the first time we Skype in over a month), having a head cold, and having gotten observed at work twice since Friday, I need a break. The weekend wasn't long enough.

My AP gave me a heads up that my principal is coming to observe me by the end of this week. This is my last observation for the year, and as long as my principal scores me fairly, I should get my tenure this spring. Though I doubt she'll score me fairly, I'm going to use tomorrow to prepare for the rest of the week. If the elements really like me, we'll be off on Wednesday too.

  • @Sailing_Mama we did something similar. Every 2 weeks we got a box of fresh local produce. Typically a seasonal mix of fruits/vegetables. It was actually through DH employer. They would deduct the cost from his paycheck and he would pick it up from a distribution point at the hospital. We didn't do it this fall but I'm hoping to start up again in the spring. It's so nice to have the fresh produce.

  • @morado23, I'm not sure about the subscription boxes, but I've been using an app called Mealime, which is sort of like blue apron, but you do the shopping yourself. I know you can customize it for allergies and food dislikes, then you can pick from menu options each week. I've noticed quite a few were gluten free already. I really like it because the app is free, and I no longer have to think ahead about what to make for dinner. They even assemble a grocery list for you.

  • Ok this is the second morning this week that either my FitBit alarm didn't go off or I turned it off without realizing. It first happened Sunday morning so I figured it got messed up because of daylight savings, and everything was fine Monday morning. Well this morning I woke up at 7:30 and I have no idea if it went off or not. In all my months of temping, I've never been able to sleep through it. WTF is going on!?

  • Have any of you seen the video of that BBC interview when the child/baby comes busting into the room? If not then I highly recommend you google it but then also see spoiler.... (Warning that this is political)

@hartmich I keep sleeping through my alarm since the time change too! The first day, I didn't go to bed until 2:30, so I figured I turned it off in my sleep. That temp wouldn't have mattered anyway. But this morning, I did it again! What the heck! 50+ days of it no problem, now all of a sudden, it's just not happening. Whomp.

I saw that! They just did a follow-up interview with the family. I kinda felt bad for the kids. They were just saying hi to dad and they start getting dragged out by the arm :( I had hoped the dad would have handled it better, but I guess you never know how you'll react until the moment.

I know, I felt the same way. It was hilarious in general but I did feel bad for the kids because they are obviously so innocent and the one older child was whipped out of there pretty roughly.
  • @JJMNO1616 I'm glad I'm not alone! I can only imagine the panic that went through their minds in the moment though, so I try not to judge the parents. I just hope the kids got lots of hugs after the fact.
  • Would anyone be interested in a weekly healthy habits check in?  I'm thinking food/fitness, obviously, but also stuff like building a flossing habit or meditation or meal prep or whatever; however you define healthy, basically.  I'd just love the extra accountability, but don't want to clutter up the board if people aren't interested.
