Tips for telling your boss?

I'll be 15 weeks tomorrow and just got my cell free DNA test results back today and everything looks good, so I'm now ready to tell my boss and other people at work. While my boss is a nice guy, he's a guy and we don't talk about our personal lives a whole lot, so I feel awkward/anxious about sharing this very personal news. Any tips or suggestions of how to bring it up? Just be to the point and get it over with quickly?

  • I left my job when I had DD, but I similarly asked for a meeting with my immediate supervisor and my boss-boss. I just told them I was pregnant and when I was due. I think I was close to 20 weeks and starting to show, but they were both oddly shocked.....

I waited about 3 weeks to tell them I had decided not to return after giving birth but was happy to identify and train a replacement.
  • I am going to go the same route as @ColoradoHiker
I'm probably not going to say anything for a few weeks yet ( I'm at the back of the September class) but when I do I am not going to over think it- just a quick, " hey by the way..."

  • DH and I work in the same school and, as a result of living overseas, many of our friends here are also coworkers. We're announcing to our friends at 13 weeks when they come over to our place for an evening (next weekend), which means we have to tell our bosses sometime next week in case our friends slip and they find out. We're just going to make a quick appointment time with them and be like, "we're expecting a baby at the end of September. At this point, I'm planning to start the school year in August and work until mid-september, but we'll let you know as soon as possible if anything changes and the midwife puts me on rest. Once I'm off, I'll be out for the rest of the school year." and DH will add in "I'll take a couple of weeks after birth and a couple of weeks connected to Christmas holidays so we can go to Canada, but I'll plan to be here for the rest of the school year" (the parental leave here is great....more than a year to split between both parents, and you can take those days any time until the kid is 6 or 7 years old, so DH can take a few weeks then go back, then take a few more weeks, etc).

  • Both times I just sat down with my boss and informed him/her (different bosses over the years) that I was expecting.  I generally told early somall the prenatal care wasn't a surprise.  Each time the boss has been moderate to extremely positive.
  • Being military, I had to tell my bosses as soon as I got it confirmed by my provider. They put us on deployment/duty restrictions right away in a pregnancy profile that gets sent to everyone in their mother practically. So I told them at 4 weeks before the profile got sent to them.  Even though I only knew them for about 3 months when I told them, they've been nothing but supportive and have checked in on me from time to time.
  • I am telling my boss on Monday. I waited till 12 weeks. I part of it is I want to start telling other people and they will need to plan who will cover my job duties while I am on maternity leave. I am a supervisor of a treatment program.  I am little nervous bc I just started this position in January. I literally accepted the position a week before I got my bfp.
  • Thanks everyone for your tips/support! I told my boss today and he was really awesome about it. Very congratulatory and told me raising his kids was the best thing he ever did. I had myself all anxious about it and there was really no reason to worry at all. Glad to have it over with and not have to worry about hiding a bump anymore!
