Re: TFAS (Trying for a Sibling) March Check-In

  • @Karrotelle I will probably wait until I have a noticeable bump, which I'm guessing will be 20ish weeks with #3. I think it'll be easier for my 4 year old to wrap her head around when she can really see it. Plus, I would like to have the anatomy scan out of the way before we tell her too.

Ugh I'm so sorry :( All the hugs to you.

I'm on mobile so I can't see your history - what are you on this cycle? Clomid? Can they try upping the dosage? What if you just ovulate later than they think? Just asking questions that I really don't know the answers to, but obviously your RE knows what's best so I'm sure they've done everything they can for this cycle to help you. Just wondering why they can't wait longer to see if your follicles will get where they need them to be?
  • @Everycol0r I'm sorry to hear :( fingers crossed for you.

@Karrotelle we will probably wait until we're out of the first tri but DS1 is 4.5 and DS2 is 2 and they are baby OBSESSED. DS1 tells me daily (sometimes multiple times a day) that he wants a baby in my tummy lol

    @50Wife @TravelingCouple

I don't have my current treatment history in my signature, just my DX. I was already taking the max dosage of Femara. I'm on CD14 and the OPKs aren't positive yet but slowly darkening. There's no issue in waiting to let them grow, in fact at this point that is the plan. They nyx'd the plan to trigger me early because the right follicles wouldn't be mature enough. So instead we now play the waiting game and hope my body will O naturally in 3 or more days so that those little righties have more time to beef themselves up.

So the plan is just to do OPKs now, when I get a positive, call them so they can mark it in my chart, have TI, and then wait for AF.

I was so hopeful that we could get two fat follicles on the right so we could potentially do our first IUI ever because I finally responded well to the Femara.

Honestly, I haven't even thought of what might be coming up that I would have to work my pregnancy around.  Now with DD I didn't get to go on the huge family cruise because of my pregnancy.  Kinda glad I didn't go because I heard when they got back that there was some drama the whole time.
  • @ladystinson I hear you on the burnout before FW..at this point it's just like going through the motions. When DH is sick during FW...forget it! I still make him suck it up, but it does stink

Welcome @hoosiermama! If running is your thing, I say go for it! When is the race? If it's not too far in advance, I say do it. It's something for you and it's important to have something for ourselves in the craziness of TTC. My two cents :)

@Karrotelle DS is 2 so hopefully if I get ktfu anytime soon then he would be 3 or around 3 when I have a second. I'd probably wait until we're ready to tell everyone before telling him, as I'm sure he'd give it away if we weren't announcing yet.

Any thoughts about this cycle?  I'm not feeling too optimistic.  I haven't o'd yet but it's probably going to the one time this month I will be traveling for work.  It's only 2 days so we should still be able to get decent timing at least.

    Any questions?

GTKY: What's something you've been thinking about doing/planning but keep putting off in case you get pregnant? (So we can encourage each other to do it!)
Getting back into running longer distances.  I'm scared to start a more intense exercise routine in case I do get pregnant, so most of my "runs" are more like run a little, walk a little and repeat, even though I'm definitely capable of running more.
  • @hoosiermama1 Even though I was a regular runner, I found it uncomfortable to run mid way through the second trimester, even with a running band/belt. I always felt like I had to pee and my ligaments just felt so loose. I hope it's different this next time.
  • cdnrunning I felt OK until about 28 weeks, but could only run in places that were close to multiple bathrooms (the park, the high school, etc..) and with my belt. The last time I ran was the day I turned 30 weeks. I just started walking every day with my mom at that point.
  • **Lurking since I don't quite fit in this group yet (TTA)** @hoosiermama1 you are my new hero. That's amazing! I started C25K last year and have built up to regular 4 mile runs. I would love to keep them up if/when I get pregnant again.

  • @hoosiermama1 Interestingly I had a much easier time continuing crossfit than running. I had to stop around 34/35 weeks though because I was showing some early labor symptoms.
  • I don't think I posted in the TFAS yet, but I think it is smart to put things related to our current children here where it won't upset anyone. Just wanted to throw out there that I am still BF if anyone wants to chat about TTC while BF. I just had my second period (DD is almost 18 months and BFs a lot less, except at night lol).

pawcall TTC is so mentally and emotionally consuming… and it sounds like time wise for you too. Don’t beat yourself up!

What number are you trying for? Two!

    Cycle/Month? 2/2

Other children at home? Ages (if you want to share)? A girl who will be 18 months this week :)

Any thoughts about this cycle? Well, I'm starting to feel like I'm regular and was glad to have two cycles in a row (was worried I'd skip because of BF), so I am feeling optimistic, which is probably not a good thing. I do have a REALLY hard time with all the BDing. First, I'm so obviously only into it when it is around O time, and DH can tell. Second, he feels a lot of pressure, so if we go every day in a row in my window, he won't always complete the task... so I'm trying to figure my "MUST" days blah blah blah. Woe is me, right? I'm just not crazy about BDing more than once a week TBH...

Any questions? Can time move more quickly?

GTKY: What's something you've been thinking about doing/planning but keep putting off in case you get pregnant? (So we can encourage each other to do it!) I want to move DD to a twin size bed with a railing (I sleep with her for part of the night some nights and want a bed we can be in together, and I just think she is ready. She NEVER liked the crib), but for some reason I want to wait until I see the BFP so I can then start planning where to put her crib for baby two. Man that isn't exciting... Why would anyone even encourage me to do that lol? I'm so not interesting everyone. I'm sorry

  • It's been at least 4 months of no breastfeeding and my cycles are still regulating. Two cycles ago I could tell my temps were too high in the follicular phase but at least I had a 13 day luteal phase. Last cycle my luteal phase was 6 days :( How long did it take for your cycles to regulate after breastfeeding?
  • @cdnrunning I know it's so different for everyone.  With my first, I got my first period postpartum at 2 months (despite EBF, still bitter).  He was waking up too much to make temping effective then. But once I started temping for prevention about 4 mo. post partum, everything seemed totally normal.  This second time my period didn't come back until 6 months, and it seemed to be totally normal (at least in terms of ovulation date/length) until the past two cycles.  I can't speak to temperatures, because I've just started temping again now.  But I am hesitant to attribute the weirdness I've had the last two cycles to breastfeeding just because it was normal before that.

Anecdotally, of my friends who've BF while TFAS, 3/4 regulated almost immediately upon stopping BF and one took around 6 months to stop being wonky.

I will say, the chart for the month that I conceived my second (while breastfeeding) is awful.  As in, FF never even gave me crosshairs.  My temps were all fairly high and it pretty much looks like an anovulatory cycle, but obviously none of that mattered in the end.  The cycle before, it looked like my luteal phase was 7 days, so who knows.

@KatieEl I was never regular prior to pregnancy so now sure why I thought things would be different now lol. Your TFAS experience makes me feel a bit better. I've had a lot of fluctuation in my luteal phase but it's never been anywhere near 6 days. I suppose, when in doubt, HIO!
  • *lurker*

Not TTC yet, but very interested in the topic of TTC while BF.

@KatieEl that's all very interesting. I didn't know if BF could affect LP length, but I guess it makes sense. I still haven't gotten my PP period. I thought I did 3 months PP, but it turned out to be spotting. Was your first child STTN when you started temping? Did you/do you track CM?

I guess I'll introduce myself since I'm butting in here:

I was active on the TTGP board while TTC my first June-Aug 2015 and was active on the May16 BMB. DS is 10 months. I plan to start TTC in September so I can be sure get in another school year before having another baby (I teach part time).

Obviously it's way early for me to check in, but I have BOTB, so I hope you don't mind me joining in here and there, especially if the BFing while TTC convo comes up again. I don't want to wean my son until he is ready, but I also want another baby, so it's something I think about a lot.

  • @cdnrunning did you have any cycles while you were BFing or did it start back up when you stopped?

  • @lalala2004 I started temping once my first son was only waking up once at night (around 2 am) so that I got at least three hours before taking the temperature.  This second time I only started temping now that we're actively TTC.  Both times I tracked CM, I'm rather lucky on that front and have always made enough that it's easy enough for me to keep an eye on it via toilet paper.

How often are you BF your 8 month old now?  I know some people have to stop BF entirely for their cycle to come back and others just need to cut back.  When I got pregnant with my second, my older son was nursing about 3+ times a day (morning, after nap, before bed; the plus was if he was hurt/tantrum-y).

  • I was TTC for 4 months while BFing DD1 (link to my chart in siggy, those charts are Feb 2015-May 2015), and my LP ranged from 8-12 days during those months. I got KU the month I weaned her (June 2015). Because it worked that way last time, I weaned DD2 about 2 weeks ago and am currently 2 DPO so we'll see if it works again, but I was temping/charting for 2 months before I weaned (Dec 2016-Jan 2017) and my LP ranged from 9-11 days. SO I have no idea what my "normal" LP is without nursing, but I'm curious to see how long it is this month if I'm not KU, would be useful to know if BFing made it shorter. I do know that my cycle came back much earlier this time (only 4 months postpartum) but wasn't regular until she was reliably STTN.

  • @mispanda none at all. I started slowly decreasing frequency after 4 months and was completely done by 5 months. It took about 4 weeks or so to get my first period post partum
  • @EmilyLove25 & @KatieEl Yay fellow BF & TTC mama's.

I didn't get my cycle back until a month after we night weaned DS and he started sleeping through the night at 10 months PP, we abruptly went from 5-6 BF sessions per day to 3-4 so I think that's what did it. Now he only BFs maybe 2-3 times per day, usually morning and bedtime, at 14 months. I don't want to stop until he is ready so I hope getting KU doesn't kill my supply, as I've heard it does for some women. So far my luteal phase has been 11-13 days, I dont know what it was before DS because even though we TTC for 9 months, I didnt chart until the month I got KU!

  • Glad to see a TTC while BF discussion, going to hop in here with my check in:

What number are you trying for? 2

    Cycle/Month? N/A

Other children at home? Ages (if you want to share)? DS, 1 year old in a week!

Any thoughts about this cycle? Long vent:
Still no PP cycle/AF. I've been temping when I can, doing the occasional OPK (but not every day), and tracking CM. DS sleeps through the night, only BF in the morning and evening before bed, and I pump once during the day. I'm going to wean off the pump next week and then just BF in the mornings and evenings. Those have been getting shorter and I'm just going to follow DS's lead.

I'm anxious to start TTC but also want to make sure I'm meeting DS's needs and that my body is ready. It's frustrating at times to not yet have my cycles back, especially when others with younger kids do because sometimes it feels like there's something wrong with my body for not starting the cycles again. I try to just tell myself that I'm still within the normal range, everyone is different, and the delay is just my body's way of telling me that it's not ready for another pregnancy yet and to just be patient.

I've been lurking a lot on the board but have been hesitant to participate too much because it feels like I somehow don't belong here because I don't have a cycle yet, but I know that's just me being down on myself. Ugh I'm just in a weird emotional place, anxious and scared waiting for my cycles to return so we can start TTC (I worry it might take a while, so I want to get started and get any problems figured out sooner rather than later, and that's adding pressure) but also trying to constantly remind myself to just enjoy DS and be patient. The hormonal changes of starting to wean probably aren't helping :) I don't think I've ever looked forward to AF as much as I am now!

    Any questions?
Nope, reading about others' experiences with BF and TTC has been helpful :)

GTKY: What's something you've been thinking about doing/planning but keep putting off in case you get pregnant? (So we can encourage each other to do it!)
Hmm...I think buying new clothes for summer and next fall.  When I see a cute top or dress for summer, especially form-fitting ones, a part of me thinks "well, if you're KU/X amount along by X month then it might not fit." Ugh it's silly I know, but probably better for my budget in the long run!
  • @KatieEl he's actually 10 months! He still nurses at least every 4 hour (at night, too) but I know he isn't drinking quite as much milk because he only drinks 5 oz on days I work. I only have to pump after 7 hours at work, and I'm hoping I can stop pumping when he's a year old. We'll see how it goes!

  • @happyhiccup Welcome!  Don't feel hesitant to participate, and don't feel down on yourself!  I can't offer any advice because my DS is almost 4 (took us awhile to think about TFAS :) But if you're truly concerned maybe talk to your doctor.

I understand trying to be patient (I'm heading into my 8th month of TFAS) that's what I'm trying to do, and it is not my strong suit!

  • @cdnrunning I had 6 cycles while I breastfed. I can't remember when I got my first pp period but dd was at least 8+ months.  All six were irregular and after dd was done breastfeeding it took maybe another 2/3 months to show any kind of sign of getting 'regular'.   Give it a couple more months and see if things start to 'pattern' and if you're still concerned I don't think it hurts to talk to an OB or RE about it.

  • @mispanda I think I'm getting closer. Pre and post temps looks similar to past "normal" cycles. While I'd obviously be disappointed if I wasn't KU this cycle, I'd be at least half relieved if my luteal phase was at least 10 days. I've had to take progesterone in the past and I'm sort of "waiting and seeing" how this cycle goes before making a Dr's appointment. So on that note - how about a glass of wine? :)
  • I breastfed DD until she turned 2 last July. I got my first PP period when she was about 8-9 months and was irregular the first couple of months before going back to my prepregnancy normal. We were TTC for 7 months before I weaned and we're on month 15 now so I honestly don't know if breastfeeding affected it. This is only my third cycle temping so I don't know what my LP was before but it's 14 days now. I will say that I think breastfeeding dried up my CM a lot. I had hardly any EWCM until I took evening primrose oil this cycle.

  • @happyhiccup my guy turned one on Feb 28th, I stopped BFing around the beginning of January I believe, and even then it had only been once (maybe twice) at night for about two months. My period came back the beginning of Feb, then again mid-Feb, and lasted 15 days the second time. I'm thinking the first was anovulatory. I felt like you did, worried something was wrong since I hadn't gotten it back yet. I had to keep reminding myself that my periods have always been wonky and super irregular. Now I'm just hoping my body regulates quickly and I'm not having periods every other week for the rest of my life, haha.

  • It's interesting how different everyone's experiences are with BF and TTC. I got my first PP cycle back when DS was 11 months old and he was still BF on demand. My LP has been very short ever since and never really lengthened out. I had to take (and still do) progesterone to get my LP to a long enough length.

My LP was on the shorter side when TTC DS too, but was in a more normal range of (11-12 days), rather than 7-10 days this time around. I thought once he weaned it would lengthen, but it didn't really. He weaned at 20 months and has been weaned for 7 months and my LP was hovering around 9 days if I was lucky.

The high prolactin is what affects the LP - it decreases estrogen and progesterone. Progesterone is what dominates the luteal phase of the cycle. If anyone's interested in the scientific and biology side of it like I am. I asked my LC about it because I was curious.

If you're still having short LPs once you wean, it's worth looking into progesterone supplementation. It has worked wonders for me and my LP is 13-14 days while taking it.
  • The TTC while BF talk is interesting for me. I'll be getting my IUD removed at the end of the month as long as all my testing comes back normal so we haven't actively started TTC yet but my DS2 is 2 and he still BFs regularly with no plan to stop lol
ill be interested to see if it has an affect on my cycles. I will say this though, when I got my first PP period after DS1 (9mos pp and still BF) my cycles were more regular than they ever were. I think I'm more nervous about how the IUD will have effected my cycles since I have had a real period since before i got KTFU with DS2 in March 2014

@TravelingCouple that certainly gives me pause. My LP was also 11-12 days when I was charting while TTC.  I really appreciate you all sharing your experiences. It definitely gives me a lot to be aware of!

  • What number are you trying for? 2

    Cycle/Month? 8

Other children at home? Ages (if you want to share)?
    DS is almost 17 months

    Any thoughts about this cycle?
I decided to stop temping for a bit. DS is an awful sleep so I question the accuracy of my temps and trying to get enough sleep to temp causes me to wake up more. Just using opks this month.

    Any questions?
Is it normal to get 4 days in a row of positive opks? This is my first month using opks.

GTKY: What's something you've been thinking about doing/planning but keep putting off in case you get pregnant? (So we can encourage each other to do it!)
losing weight. Planning a Disney cruise. Getting rid of DS' clothes.
  • What number are you trying for?  2

Cycle/Month? Waiting for my period and then we will officially begin!

Other children at home? Ages (if you want to share)? 8 month old daughter

Any thoughts about this cycle? My cycles have been irregular since having my daughter so I'm not entirely sure when to expect my period.

    Any questions? Not yet

GTKY: What's something you've been thinking about doing/planning but keep putting off in case you get pregnant? (So we can encourage each other to do it!) yikes I don't know...I can't think of anything right now!! It's more like the opposite. I need to organize our guest room because that will be DD's room when baby #2 comes along. I think I've been putting it off until I actually get pregnant
