Keeping it a secret in the first trimester - stealthy coping strategies?

Is anyone else struggling to keep things on the down-low at work? I have been so freakin' tired the last week or two and in the afternoons it's hard to keep my eyes open at mt desk. Just yesterday I debated whether or not I could keep my head down over paper work and make it look like I was concentrating/thinking but was instead sleeping. I'm chomping down crackers like crazy, and I'm just hitting the six-week mark tomorrow so in a way I kind of feel like it's all going to get worse before it gets better.

Plus, my mom gets into town today for a four-day visit. My husband and I aren't yet ready to share the news with anyone until after our first appointment, and moms are pretty hard to fool, so I don't know how I can keep my symptoms a secret from her. Before I left for work this morning, I threw a couple of empty tampon wrappers in the bathroom garbage can to throw her off.  :)

How are you coping at work with keeping your pregnancy a secret either at work or from family/friends? Do you have any tips or tricks that have helped you fool people you're not yet ready to share your news with?

  • When I was pregnant with DS, I had invited a bunch of girlfriends over for a slumber party while DH was out of town. I was worried they'd notice I wasn't drinking and suspect. So I made a point of complaining about my period in front of them.

I did the same thing with my mom. She asked if I was pregnant, so I kept complaining about my cramps. When we finally told her we were pregnant, her first response was "but what about the cramps?"

As for work, I would close my office door and nap during my lunch break. That's all I've got for you there.

  • I totally did the tampon wrappers in the trash at my parent's house with my last pregnancy. My mom was on to me bc of my big mouth. I meant to text "hey, baby daddy" to my husband and I accidentally texted her. She was on to me for awhile making comments in front of my sisters until I threw the wrappers away.

My good friend at work keeps asking if I'm pregnant bc I'm always tired and moody and not eating the same. I blame it on working a lot of overtime and I've had food that doesn't agree with my sensitive stomach (which is actually true a lot!).
  • My mom is totally clueless and would never suspect anything. My future SIL actually called me out on it last week bc I refused wine and my mom heard her ask me if I was pregnant. She said nothing lol like just brushed it off. So yeah. I have no advice on hiding it bc my family won't figure things out unill I'm ready to pop. In fact we're waiting to tell them when I'm showing.

  • I could never hide it from my parents!! I just looked at it as if God forbid I miscarried I'd want my mom to know anyways for support so that's how I justified telling them. Well that and I can't lie to save my life.  Luckily my boss lives out of town so I only communicate with her over the phone or email or I'm sure she'd know too haha.  Good luck!
  • I told my family right away last time, and this time I managed to wait a week and then told my mom and she proceeded to tell all of my family so pretty much everyone knows, but we won't do Facebook official until second trimester and ultrasounds.
  • Had to employ another sneaky tactic. I needed to vomit at work today so I went two floors down to use the bathrooms there in case if anyone heard me there was a lower chance of bumping into a fellow colleague.

  • @buttercream_frosting have you asked your OB about meds to help the MS?  I just got on diclegis and honestly it's been a lifesaver for me.  I was puking all day long and now nothing but a few gags here and there.  Didn't know how I'd get through the work day until I started taking this.

  • @emgem819 It's not too bad. I vomit every few days and once I do I feel so much better. It doesn't bother me.

  • @buttercream_frosting ok good to hear.  I can't handle any vomiting but I hear you on feeling better afterwards.
