Makeup??

Ok i'm thinking that there isn't already a discussion on this... (crossing fingers)

so i'm really into makeup - wear it everyday. I cannot go out with out it! I was reading somewhere that there are some items that you cannot wear while pregnant... Does anyone know of any brands that are not safe to wear while pregnant??

Re: Makeup??

  • If anything has retinol, I know that's a no no.  But I'm not sure how many make up products have that.  I think it's more of the anti-aging products like creams and serums.

I was always under the impression that it was this and acne products that you had to look out for. But normal everyday makeup is typically noting to worry about.

  • @Kreese I love makeup too. What products did you read about?

  • @bluejeanbabi05 none in particular.. other than red lipstick apparently is a no no.. but there are certain chemicals that we need to stay away from.. This is one of the articles I found https://www.thebump.com/a/makeup-ingredients-avoid-during-pregnancy
  • Anything with retinol in it is correct, Some acne products as well (benzoyl peroxide may be the ingredient but I am drawing a blank). Red lipstick is one, but I am a lipstick whore and will probably just try not to wear it often.

After reading It Starts With The Egg while TTC, I've tried to use clean and natural products.  I was specifically looking at phthalates and parabens but it's time consuming to go through the ingredient list on every product and those aren't the only chemicals out there that are suspect.

BUT, the app "Think Dirty" is awesome.  It lets you look up YOUR products by barcode, it breaks down the product by its list of chemicals which you can then read more about (*eta including sources, lawsuits and regulatory agency warnings), and it has a list of cleaner alternatives.  It sounds like it could be helpful for you in your endeavor :)

  • Check out the Think Dirty app for your phone. It has a lot of products in its database and rates how "dirty" they are, even specifically rating "Developmental and Reproductive toxicity."
I've been able to scan a bunch of my products to get instant results, and you can browse for other products. A few of my less-mainstream products aren't in the database, but they say they are adding new ones all the time.

  • Haha, great minds!
  • I think in general, anything that has not been tested in animals, is safe to use.

Love makeup too! I haven't heard of any particular brands that aren't safe during pregnancy, but the FDA allows makeup companies to put so many chemicals and harmful agents like lead in their makeup, and its completely legal for them to do so. No warnings, nothing.  I have been vigilant on what type of makeup i use long before i was TTC. The best brands that don't have harmful ingredients are usually vegan makeup companies and cruelty free brands.
