Dog owners: tick prevention

Hi everyone,

Just wondering what people are doing to keep pets tick-free as we enter spring. We live in an area with a ton of ticks and Lyme disease, so don't want our dog bringing anything home.

We've used the Seresta collar in the past, but now with Cora I'm trying to find the best prevention with least opportunity for chemical exposure. I'm thinking we may go this route again, and just keep a bandana over the collar when the dog is inside and be extra vigilant about Cora's grabbing hands.

I use Trifexis, which is heartworm, flea, and tick medicine. It's a pill the size of a nickel that you give once a month. It's a pain getting my dog to swallow it (he's too smart for his own good so I have to resort to force feeding it) but it's nice that there's no chemicals or weird smell.

ETA: it's a bit pricey. I've been meaning to look into a better source than buying from the vet.

  • I have always used the frontline liquid stuff down the spine and heart guard for heart worm. We live at the base of the foothills in CO so I definitely try to be careful about ticks.
  • I love the all in one pills @meggyme is referring to but they are pricey.

I am going back to Heartguard and Frontline to save money.

FWIW- I just placed an order for 1 year of heartworm through 1800 Pet Meds and I believe it was $135 for both dogs. Huge savings!

  • The seresto collar is definitely the best bang for your buck and easiest to use (put it on and change it 8 months later versus applying topical treatments or using pills each month). I wouldn't worry too much about the chemical exposure -- I work for a pet store and we have lots of customer (and staff) who use this with their small children climbing all over the dog and touching the collar and we've never heard of adverse reactions.

@meggyme Trifexis is only heartworm, flea and intestinal parasite.  It does not do ticks.
Probably the best sellers at the clinic I work at are Nexgard and Bravecto. Both are chewable and both get fleas and ticks.  Nexgard is monthly, and Bravecto is every 3 months.  I personally use Bravecto.   The seresto colors are another option as well.  Topicals are good but not if you bathe your pet a lot or have a pet that is in and out of water (ponds...) A lot.
  • We use Advantix 2.  It's poison to cats but great for our dog.  I love that it covers mosquitos as well as fleas and ticks.

  • We use Adantix II as well for both our dogs. I would use the seresto collar but my dogs don't wear regular collars so we opted not to use them. We do bathe every 2 weeks so we reapply the drops about every 3 weeks because of it. (No one likes smelly dogs. Lol).

Chewy.com recently had the collars and the drops on sale so maybe check it out and see if it's still going.

Note: The seresto collar is effective for 8 months if you only bathe 1 a month (you keep the collar on 24/7). If you bathe more then 1 a month or they are in water all the time playing, the effectiveness goes down to 5 months.
  • We were use nexguard. It's a monthly chewable pill that Finn just thinks is an extra treat.
