NICU support week 2/27

All of us surviving NICU want it! If you got one currently in NICU, just released, or are a mom who has been there this is for you! Questions, struggles, successes, advice are all welcome!

Re: NICU support week 2/27

  • I'm having trouble with baby basics, like holding him right for two reasons. One, he is a longgg baby and I have short little arms. Two, I'm only making it to the NICU once a day and even squeezing that in is hard.

  • @disneybaby84 do they restrict the time you're in there? I'm right there with you on holding right. Plus all those damn wires get in the way. Since my first was 41 weeks he had more head control and everything. So this super floppy baby is a new experience.

They put our little dude on Zantac because he kept destating and gagging even when it'd been hours since he ate. Hoping it helps. Also moved to a sensitive formula.

  • @datalover13 Tell me about those wires! They make nervous I'm going to do something bad. They don't restrict my time, it's just I am trying to be good and pump semi regular and finish odds and ends at home for when he is released.

Poor guy, gagging is tough! Your docs give you an estimate for release?
  • @disneybaby84 Have you considered bringing in a Boppy to prop the baby up a little bit? When my guys were in the nicu they gave me a regular pillow to help prop them up so I could hold/feed them at the right angle.Either might be helpful. The pillow helped me to relax and not be so self conscious while holding them!

  • @disneybaby84 that's awesome. DH and I will start switching days here once I'm discharged today and after I can drive I'll probably try to get more done at home.
As long as we just have to do one week of antibiotics, and he gets this eating/reflux thing figured out, I'm hoping Saturday. What about you guys?

  • @datalover13 The doctor wants baby's sodium levels to increase and to maintain that level for a successful discharge. It's happening very slowly, from yesterday to today he went up 3. He's got 7 more to go and he has to keep it there.
  • @disneybaby84 glad they're increasing! Hope he gets there fast.

  • @disneybaby84 are you able to pump in the NICU? They should have hospital grade pumps there for you to use with your own kit. Might help you be able to spend more time there.
  • Hey ladies! My three are in the nicu for the foreseeable future, though we're really hoping for three weeks or less! My biggest struggle so far has been getting there. I'm not far from the nicu right now, but that csection was so damn painful that getting up from bed is a huge deal. I won't be discharged until Thursday, so hopefully I can start to feel better before then and get in as many snuggles as possible before we head home. Also, pumping sucks!!!!!!

  • @AandDM2014. I know exactly what you mean by having difficulty just getting to the nicu. Are you still in the hospital?
  • @AandDM2014 I hear ya on the c-section pain. I pushed myself way too hard the second day and had to scale it back. I'm four days out now and still in a lot of pain, but staying on top of the meds is helpful. Sleeping has been rough though. For the most part everyday is a lot easier.

I'm starting to get the feeling I should be especially thankful my hospital has a room for me to stay in as long as the baby is here? I was technically discharged last night, but they have a room for parents of special care nursery babies to stay in.

  • @disneybaby84 I am. I don't get discharged until Thursday, thank goodness! I couldn't imagine having to go home today! It's usually just 2 days, but since the babies are in the nicu I can stay up to 4.

@datalover13 ugh yes. I was nearly in tears this morning from the pain! When my nurse asked if I wanted 5 or 10 mg of Norco I obviously begged for the 10! And yes, you are lucky there is a place for you to stay! We have to go home, though there is a bed in my room for DH to use since no patients need it, so he's been here the entire time with me. I'll have to ask what our options are, but I think we'll have to just go home, which is a minimum of 45 minutes from the hospital.

  • Sorry been gone for a bit. I have learned a lot about baby adjusting to home life versus nicu life. Wednesday and Thursday baby had not quite adjusted to exclusive breastfeeding and sleeping in a different bed, different sounds than hospital.  Baby seems to be handling life at home better, is excellent at breastfeeding. in fact last night, baby was trying to find milk when i was empty, bought lactation cookies today, to have a better night tonight.  Hoping you ladies are getting your babies soon!
