Acid Reflux/MS questio?

ok, so I am 11w5d and have been battling pretty severe/relentless morning sickness and acid reflux for the last 7 weeks. With my son I had zero morning sickness except with the occasional wave of nausea if I hadn't eaten in a while and I didn't experience reflux until much much later on. This time its the constant struggle to keep everything down, feeling disgusted by every possible food option while being simultaneously starving which in turn makes you more sick, which I happen to think is the worst pregnancy joke of all time. Anyway. I know all of that is fairly normal for some of us but, what is really making me lose my mind is the constant feeling of food being caught in my throat. Is anyone else going through this?? I have read it can be considered a side effect of reflux but, it's unbelievable. I literally feel like nothing is actually reaching my stomach but instead it's all just resting right in my esophagus. Tmi- if I burp (which is ever 4.5 seconds now) I literally get a mouth full of food. So, it's definitely not just a sensation.. it's there. It's been going on for weeks! I even tried an all soft food diet for several days to see if it would help and it didn't. I am at my wits end and I am dying to know if I'm the only one out here dealing with this bullshit or if this is just par for the course with MS. I honestly do know know how much longer I can deal with this with my sanity still intact.

  • I haven't dealt with the food feeling stuck portion of things, but I definitely feel you on the nausea.  Have you discussed this with your midwife/ OB yet?

  • Yeah, I didn't really get much of a response. Just an "hmm..." and on to the next. I feel like I could deal with the normal ms much better if this wasn't happening. It's really awful and it's something I just can't get my mind off of because the sensation is so intense. It really hard to describe. I have been taking Zantac 75 everyday which I hate, but I have read it *could* be a side effect of reflux but, it hasn't touched it at all. Helps amazingly with the acid burning... just not this. I just don't know what to do!

  • @OmSweetOm I'm not sure if this will help but it's definitely something to discuss with the doctor.  I've dealt with a lot of reflux this pregnancy and luckily for me Zantac has helped.  My son however had pretty bad reflux as an infant and the Zantac did not helpmuch at all, but when we switched to Prilosec there was a huge difference. They do two different things, one neutralizes acid and one helps with the little piece of the stomach that controls the opening (sorry for my not so medically technical terms here). It might be worth discussing whether Prilosec is safe/useable during pregnancy. I'm not sure what the medical community says about it.  But definitely worth asking about.

I hope you get some teluef soon
  • That sounds miserable! I haven't had issues with reflux, but I was having pretty terrible heart burn and my Dr told me to take Prilosec daily. It has helped tremendously!

  • Prolonged acid reflux can cause weathering more or less of the back of your throat. It can look like a small rough patch at the back of the throat and will make you feel like there is something stuck in the back of the throat. There are meds that help it resolve faster, but it should go away on its own without meds too once the acid reflux calms down.
  • You are describing what I went through exactly. I unfortunately don't have any advice on how to relieve the feeling of food caught and constantly burping it up. My morning sickness has gotten so much better in the last week and I've noticed that the reflux has calmed down with it. I really hope you will get some relief soon.
  • I have had acid reflux disease as long as I can remember and have been treated for it since I was 15. What you are experiencing can definitely be a part of acid reflux. It used to happen to me before I was diagnosed and it happens to me occasionally when I have a flare up. Before I was diagnosed, it got so bad that I just stopped eating and ended up in the hospital. One doctor diagnosed me with anorexia and wouldn't listen to me about what my real problem was. Anyway, I am taking 20 mg of Prilosec and it has been a miracle. You will have to take it a few days in a row before you will notice a change. It's not a quick fix, but you can take it with your Zantac while you are getting the Prilosec in Your system, or if you have extra heartburn occasionally. Definitely ask your doctor for help and don't back down when they brush you off. What you are experiencing isn't normal morning sickness IMO.

  • I will definitely be pushing for something else from the doctor. I didn't realize that the different reflux medications worked on different aspects! That is great to know because this is much less about the burning and clearly more of an issue with the "ring" that keeps the stomach closed off. Ugh. It's so unbelievably gross and uncomfortable but I feel a little better just knowing at least SOMEONE knows what I'm talking about! Everyone I've tried to explain it to just looks at me like I'm speaking another language.  :s

  • I have really bad reflux. To the point to where I can't eat much of the foods I like to eat because I feel like my throat is closing in. It's kind of scary. I don't really get any heartburn but I do get the bile and what not coming up after certain meals. The only thing that helps me is staying away from certain foods and not eating before bedtime or laying down soon for a nap soon after I eat. I still eat salsa and red sauce every now and then but I just can't as often anymore.

I take OTC medication every now and then.

Im sorry you have to go through this :(
  • I had to take Zantac with my first PG it got so bad. It also started early in the first tri. With this PG, I've had it, just not as bad. So I've been munching on tums every day.
