Re: Randoms - Week of 2/27

  • Hi ladies! I've been doing my research on cord blood banking and placenta encapsulation and I'm having a hard time deciding what to do. I'm leaning towards doing both but not sure. Does anyone have any reasons they are willing to share on why they decided to do or not to do cord blood banking and/or placenta encapsulation?
  • I am thinking hard on the cord blood also due to most likely having preemie babies and I know 2 people where a transplant would have saved their life. Its just a lot of money for 2.

  • I decided against blood banking due to the cost, but I did do placenta encapsulation. There is enough anecdotal evidence to indicate it helps with a multitude of issues. And there is no actual scientific research, btw, it's all personal record at this point. DH and I were of the mindset that it can't hurt, and it could help. Just make sure that you find someone who has a sterile lab to work with. And my hospital required me to be hep c negative for my placenta to be taken, not sure if that's standard but double check. And also, if your baby passed meconium or you had an infection, they should not use your placenta due to risks, so make sure your person isn't going to charge you until they know they can actually deliver.
    Good luck!

  • I actually haven't even really thought about the cord banking but I won't be doing the placenta encapsulation, it just doesn't appeal to me.

Q: has anyone found any useful breastfeeding books that they'd recommend?

  • Does anyone know if you do delayed cord clamping does that rule out cord blood banking?
  • @nellin - we are going to try to do both...basically our Doc said you just have to prioritize one over the other. We definitely want to do delayed clamping and sometimes if you do, there isn't enough blood in the cord to bank (we would be donating to a public bank). So for us, delayed clamping took priority and we will bank the cord blood if there's enough.

  • Thanks ladies! I decided yes on encapsulation but hadn't even thought about having to prioritize delayed clamping and banking. We definitely want delayed clamping though, so this will also be our priority even if we decide to try banking.

  • @wifeinraleigh28 He is doing ok. Still on CPAP. Still on a feeding tube. I wish you guys well, but it is too painful for me to be on here. Having a sick baby in NICU while all the people who are due when you were supposed to be due are decorating their nurseries etc is too much. It's like the jealousy of infertility but worse. I know you guys can understand that feeling. Good luck to you and your babies!
