Moms with DCs that LOVE milk

DD LOVES milk, she asks for it constantly and it is pretty tough to keep her to 16-20oz as per my pedi.  If she had her way, we'd be close to 30oz.  She does eat well and is just normal toddler picky, she also happily drinks water at meal time.

How do you keep the milk intake down (esp. when they can ask for it by name and say no to other options)?  Do you let it really worry you or do you go with the flow?

Thanks!

Re: Moms with DCs that LOVE milk

  • We don't allow DD to get more than the pediatrician recommends because it can interfere with nutrient?absorption?(something that DD has had issues with anyway). ?We have a "no milk between meals" policy.

  • I limit my milk lover by putting a little less in his sippy than what he used to get.  I don't let it over worry me as long as he is eating other things too.
  • DS only has milk at meals so he does not ask for it in between at all. ?He gets about 16-20 oz a day just drinking it at breakfast, lunch and dinner. ?In between he gets either water or juice and that is all he asks for.

  • Ditto, Dandelionmom. Ben was the same way and it was affecting his iron-absorption so we had to limit it to just meal-times. That caused a new problem because he'd just drink the milk and fill up without eating his food(he was low-weight so that was NOT good!). Finally, he just learned the rule that he could ask for it twice, then he could have juice twice and then it was onto water for the rest of the time. He's three now and refuses to drink milk. Jeesh! Be careful what you wish for;)

  • We had that issue when DD was between 12-20 months. It was hell trying to get her to eat. She refused to eat, just simply refused. We tried EVERYTHING. Everything. We tried the 'no milk' and she screamed and screamed to the point that it took hours to calm her down. I couldn't have her getting that upset for that long.

So we said F it and gave up. DH would put fish oil in her milk for Omega 3s. She finally got out of that, but it really was awful so I sympathize w/ you!  We did try feeding her yogurt, which she tolerated most days. We figured it wasn't too much of a departure from milk for her, yet has a little more nutrition.

  • Sometimes we water down DS's milk if he's had a lot for the day. ?He's never even noticed!

  • This is way overthinking. I am betting all the kids in this category were bottle fed (FF or breastmilk). As someone who has only ever breastfed directly because DS wouldn't take a bottle - you don't know how much they eat and you don't need to know. All you need to know is that they are growing well and eating well.

Putting a number on how much milk is just silly.

DS loves milk. I have found that not giving him milk within the 30 mins prior to meals means he's only toddler-picky and still eats well and grows well. To that end it is just like not giving him snacks 30 mins before meals. Not hard. Other than those times he can have as much milk as he likes. And he loves it.

Personally I never saw such overmedicalisation of normal kids before.
