GTKY: Lent

What are you giving up? Doing?

I never give anything up if I am pregnant (sugar if I am not) so I have decided to do something. I saw a meme on FB that says to fill a bag (any size) each day of stuff you don't need anymore, and at the end you have 40 bags to donate to the poor. I thought this was a neat idea.

Re: GTKY: Lent

  • That is a great idea!
I never give up anything for lent anymore... mostly because I can never make it the entire time. I mostly use the time to try to form habits and better myself - swear less, spend more time with DH and SS, go to the gym more, etc..

  • I'm giving up my precious lattes.  I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but I LOVE my lattes and other espresso drinks. I usually give up "easier" things, but I'm also doing this because as a pre-diabetic I know I should cut back regardless.  I'm also worried about potential GD given my recent pre-diabetes diagnosis (I didn't have GD with prior pregnancies) so I want to do everything I can to keep LO healthy.  Ugh... this is going to hurt like a mother!  DH doesn't think I'll make it more than 48 hours.  Kind of makes me want to work that much harder.
  • I never give anything up either... but I do have a plan for this year. DH really wants to go to church more, and I could really take it or leave it. I have just always been of the mindset that I don't need to get up and get ready and be somewhere on Sunday morning to show that I believe in God. We have talked a lot about when we have kids (which is now very soon!) going with our LO at least somewhat regularly, so my big goal for lent is to go with DH at least twice. Probably sounds like a pathetic goal to some, but I love my sleep and relaxing weekend mornings. I know it will make him happy, and he has been doing so much for me since getting pregnant.

@Wino0920 I love that bag idea. We just moved into a new house in July and got rid of tons of stuff, otherwise I would do that too!

  • @Elyse1384 good luck!!!

@MKRLTX nothing is too small. I think that's a cool one.
  • Well, last year I gave up "skipping mass" for Lent, and I even failed at that.

This year, my plan is to give up meat (except fish, but fish are vegetables of the ocean, so that's fine) all days of Lent, not just Fridays.  I'm also doing a 47 day Lenten bible study on my Bible app, and at least attempting to make it to all Masses between now and Easter.

I have this one particular friend that is pretty anti-religion, but is doing all these Lent things because she loves everything Italy and "all the Italians do it", and I'm at the BEC point with her.  My good friend suggested that I give up my BEC attitude towards her for Lent and I'm all, "let's not set ourselves up for failure, ok?"

  • I normally give something up.  Like @krex I've given up meat (minus fish), sugar, salt, ice cream.  Ice cream was always the hardest for me.  I'm not sure what to do this year.  I @Wino0920's idea.  Maybe I'll give that a go.  I'm intrigued to see what everyone else says!
  • @Elyse1384 I gave up lattes 2 years ago and it was amazing. I'm not gonna lie, the first week of caffeine detox was rough. But it was really great in the end. My body learned to use healthy food for energy and I stopped needing to nap all the time from my afternoon crash. Just keep some Tylenol close by for the withdrawal headaches!  Good luck!

i didn't even realize tomorrow starts Lent already. Yikes!!  Since I've been trying to already watch my sugar and carb intake I'll just use this time to maintain my commitment to healthy eating and exercising. We also set some financial goals to help us prepare for baby so I plan to give up buying lunch at work to help with this (a lot easier said than done when you're dying for a cheeseburger at 2am).
  • A tangent, but this thread just reminded me of 40 days and 40 nights or whatever that movie was called...what ever happened to Josh Hartnett?

@kmd0501 Being pregnant definitely makes it harder to stick to a food budget!
  • I have given up things in the past but in the last few years have tried to do things instead. Most often this is more regularly attend mass. This year I was planning on doing some sort of act of service each week.
  • @MKRLTX @michaela0704 He also just finished up the last season of an awesome gothic horror series, Penny Dreadful. I highly recommend it if you like that sort of thing!
  • @michaela0704 @HgPa Both very interesting updates on him! I have a limited tolerance for scary anything, so I don't know if I'll be able to watch that one!
  • I use all cash during Lent rather than debit/credit and then I only use the bills and donate all the change I get to Holy Childhood (a children's charity my school runs a fundraiser for). This is hard for me because it kills me when something is like $5.01 and I can't use my penny. I am a math nerd like that. I also do this thing when I catch myself saying something negative about someone, I stop and say a prayer for them instead.

  • I don't usually do anything for Lent but I think I will take this opportunity to cut back on my pop consumption! I havne't gone over the caffiene limit but I still drink too much. My plan is to still have 1 in the morning and then drink propel water at lunch and tea later in the afternoon/evening. Then plain water in between. Hopefully the propel at lunch will satisfy my craving for pop and the tea in the afternoon will be enough caffiene to keep me awake!

  • @alm52386 Do you like sparkling water at all, the unsweetened kind? That usally does the trick for me, and gives bubbles without all the chemicals, sweeteners, and Phosphorus.

Like La Croix? I've tried it a few times and didn't really like it. I'm so picky!

  • This year I gave up Facebook for lent. Hasn't been too hard just yet, but I do feel a bit out of the loop.
  • My husband usually does the dishes in the evenings. So for lent I have chosen to do dish duty and clean the kitchen before bed. To free up some time for him/us/a thanks for being such a great supporter of our family.

It's a little different but I wanted to do something for someone besides just pray or give up something generic.

My husband is eating on $2 a day for lent. He's a pastor and is encouraging his congregation to do this one day a week to raise awareness and empathy for poverty in our area, but he is (without telling them and bring a dick, obviously) doing it every day of lent. I decided today that I am giving up being openly annoyed about how this inconveniences me, because that is a shitty attitude, so i spent a while tonight planning out menu options he can put in a display for his congregants who are participating. So I guess I am giving up being a bitch? Huge sacrifice, I know.
  • I finally decided that I will pray the "Our Father" aloud with DH for the baby each night. Tonight baby was moving and DH and I both had a hand on my belly as we prayed. It is pretty simple and short, but hopefully will be a good building block for future prayer as a couple and a family.

I love this! Can you share some meal ideas??
  • @neludelu Sure! It's not very healthy because produce is so expensive. Obviously things cost different amounts in different stores, and buying in bulk our on sale is cheaper, which required money up front that a lot of people don't have, so some things I went with the prices I know I commonly get on sale (like I used $1/lb as the price for posts and frozen veggies), and for everything what I used Wal-Mart's website and calculated prices power serving. Here's the three sample days I made up for publicity stuff:

    Day 1:
    Breakfast: 1 banana, 1/2 c oats - 39¢
Lunch: PBJ sandwich (2 pieces of bread, 2 T pb, 1 T jelly), hard boiled egg - 62¢
    Dinner: 4 oz pasta, 4 oz mariners, 2 (1oz) meatballs - 99¢
    Total: $2.00

    Day 2:
Breakfast: 2 eggs, 1 piece bread, 1 T butter (share between cooking eggs and spreading on bread) - 54¢
Lunch: tuna salad sandwich (2 oz tuna, 1/2 oz mayo, 2 piece bread) - 71¢
Dinner: 4 oz rice, 1/2 can beans, 2 oz frozen broccoli - 75¢
    Total: $2.00

    Day 3:
    Breakfast: 1 c cheerios, 1/2 c milk - 30¢
Lunch: 2 oz pasta, 1 T butter, 2 oz baby carrots
Dinner: Cheese quesadilla (2 sm tortillas, 3 oz cheese), 2 oz salsa - $1.34
    Total: $1.98

I'm being a bad Catholic and using being pregnant as an excuse lol.
Might follow the meat thing, like I did last Friday but not Wednesday.
I used to eat quite a bit of tuna salad this time of year, but pretty sure they say it's not good to eat it preggers. Boo.
