separated pubic bone?

has anyone experienced this?  i have been having a LOT of groin/pelvic pain....it really makes it hard to walk, turn over in bed, get up off the couch....iand it HURT like something was pulled or broken.  t didn't feel like a normal ache or pain.  so i asked my dr. and she confirmed i have a separated pubic bone which can be caused by the hormones that our bodies release to relax the area in prep. for birth.  i was a little overwhelmed and didn't ask a whole lot of questions but now i'm wondering how long it will take to recover from this after delivery.  i'm worried i'll have permanent damage.  i'm also worried that i won't be able to deliver vaginally because of this.

of course i'm going to talk to her more about this when i see her this week, but i'm wondering if anyone has this or has had it and knows more about it than i do.

TIA!

Re: separated pubic bone?

  • It's not unusual.  It's your pubic symphasis.  Look up pubic symphasis disfunction.  (And yes, hurts like hell.  I've had a major problem with it this time.)

  • That sounds JUST like what I had when I was pregnant with my DS and what I feel like I'm getting again this time. When I asked the midwife about it last time, she just told me I was stretching and not to worry.  *rolls eyes*

If it IS the same thing as what you have, mine seemed to go away immediately after delivery. . . of course, I was a little sore from giving birth, so maybe in reality it took a few days.

Oh, and YES, it's terrible.  I almost cry when I want to turn over in bed at night (God forbid I want to get OUT of bed).  Last time it got so bad I seriously had to wake Dh up to get him to help me turn over.  How humiliating!

  • This is my 2nd pg with a seperating symphasis. Yes it hurts! It didn't take long for me to heal after my son. A couple of days of just tkaing it easy which is what they tell you to do anyway. As you heal your body will harden again and go back to normal. I went to work 2 weeks after he was born. It will hurt just like when you deliver regularly. And it should not stop you from delivering vaginally. I was induced with son and possibly this one just to shorten the time I have to be in pain. HTH!
  • It's "separated" more than it was prior to being pregnant but it's not separated like an injury. Once we give birth, the pain should stop (although my OB said it should ease up around 35 weeks or so). I totally know how you feel though, I told my mom it was like someone using a chainsaw to try to split me in half. Ugh
  • awww, that sounds like me.  i have to have serious help getting up and rolling over.  glad to know it went away for you last time.

i did look it up and found some information, but i wish i could find more!  i'm just a worrier...i can deal with the pain now, but i would like to now that it's going to go away so i can jog, etc. again.

  • Glad to know this is not just me. Surprise
  • I'm totally late commenting on this, but I had it during my pregnancy with DS.  Google "symphysis pubis dysfunction."  It's so painful!

I still get a little burn or dull ache when I run or if I walk far wearing my 20+lb DS.

I did not recover right after birth like everyone said I would.  I had limited use of my left leg (mine for some reason was worse on the left side) after delivery, and couldn't roll for a few weeks after (slept on my back).  Then the joint started popping every morning...which actually felt SO FREAKING GOOD!

I'm finally getting to the point of having faith that it WILL get back to normal, but I have at times been concerned -- I delivered flat on my back with my legs spread wide, which is the exact position recommended against for SPD.  I wasn't given a choice - I was bed bound for delivery and, since I could roll and had that limited use of my left leg, I wasn't about to fight to change positions!
