Any cloth diaper mamas?

Are any of you planning to cloth diaper? If so, what do your newborn stashes look like? Or what are you planning to get?

We love cloth and have cloth diapered all our babies so far.  Over half of my newborn stash was ruined in a flood in 2014 so I am rebuilding a bit, although I had 13 that weren't impacted by the flood.

So far we have a mix of Kissaluvs size 0 fitteds, sloomb HLCs fitteds, sloomb snapless minis fitteds, a Thirsties AIO with aplix, a few WAHM fitteds, prefolds, a bunch of wool covers, 1 interlock cover, some sloomb wool pants.

What I still want to buy: 6 Blueberry NB simplex AIOs (DH's favorite), 4 sloomb snapless minis, a few more WAHM fitteds, a few Thirsties XS PUL covers.

Re: Any cloth diaper mamas?

  • I know we have a few who cloth diaper exclusively and hopefully they'll check in! Since we are moving when LO is between 2-3 months old but we don't know where yet, I've decided to put off cloth diapering until after we move (for a variety of reasons, plus we're not sure if the daycare we pick in our new location will take cloth).  I did register for (and have received a few of) the Bumgenius all-in-ones.  That is what my SIL uses and they seem like they're one of the easiest.  Once we get settled I want to try them at home and if successful, I'll look for a gently used stash or start by buying 1-2 diapers a month.

  • I'm a wannabe cloth diaper momma  but DH can't get over the fact that we would wash things that have been pooped on in our washing machine (potty training is going to be a reality check for him, I think, haha). My background is in environmental science so I absolutely detest the impact that disposable diapers have.

I tried to get DH on board with DS, so I have several SoftBums Omni and a few Thirsties Snap Duo wraps, and lots of liners. I'm looking into the GDiapers (I posted about them on the FB group too) because I think I can get DH on board with a disposable liner system, and I like that their liners are biodegradable/compostable.

I know we can't go full cloth because out daycare doesn't do it, but I would like to try and minimize our impact if we can make it affordable and workable for us.

  • @SnarkasaurusRex, DH had that hang up when I was pg with DD1! I picked cloth diapers as my hill to die on. Lol. He talked about his worry at a cloth diaper class we attended locally and the woman teaching it was like well aside from ebf poops you get the poop off prior to washing, but regardless if your kid had a blow out diaper would you throw that item of clothing away afterward just bc it had poop on it?!

Ultimately he got on board. Right before DD1 was born there was that huge Pampers issue where a chemical in them was causing second and third degree burns on babies so that helped him get on board. He loves it now! Although he has different preferences than I do, which is fine.

  • I would really like to cloth diaper after the first couple of months, once we have a routine down and are more in the swing of things with a newborn. I think we'll still use disposables occasionally - when traveling, for example, but I'd like to minimize our environmental impact where we can. However, I find that whenever I look into it I get super overwhelmed with all of the different types - all in ones, prefolds, inserts, covers, sizes, etc. How do you know which ones to get? How many do you need? And so on. Really hoping this thread will help make it seem less intimidating!

  • @kitkat8387 I'm with you on the overwhelmed bit. Looking into it was just too much. I entertained the cloth diaper idea but ultimately decided not to try it this time around--at least not for a while (we are now well stocked with NB and size 1 diapers). One of my colleagues uses cloth wipes, though, and I might try that.

  • I really wanted to use cloth for DD, but it just didn't work for her. She has very sensitive skin, and no matter how we washed/stripped/whatever we did to the diapers, she always got a really bad rash, so we gave it up. We still have our whole stash, though, so fingers crossed it'll work with the new arrival.

  • This was my favorite online resource when I was researching cloth while pregnant with DD1. I recall feeling overwhelmed by all of the choices.

    https://theecofriendlyfamily.com/cloth-diapers/

What helped even more though was attending a cloth diaper 101 class at our local cloth diaper store. They passed around all different types and brands so I could see and feel them. That helped us narrow down our starting stash. Over the years I've developed preferences and sold off the ones I don't love. There is a HUGE market for used cloth diapers if you don't love what you have chosen initially or the fit doesn't work best for your baby. They are easy to sell.

DH likes all in ones. We always have those in newborn and larger sizes for him to use since he does just as much childcare as I do. I much prefer fitteds and wool. I find that combo to be the most absorbent (both my girls have been heavy wetters so far) and breathable.

Some sites also do a newborn rental package option, so that is neat if you are unsure you want to delve into cloth via purchase. Normally at the end of the timeframe you can chose to purchase some or all of the diapers or send them all back.

We have found cloth to be really easy. It's not a lot of extra work at all. It's like 2-3 extra loads of laundry a week depending on the size of your stash. We love it!

  • We're planning to cloth diaper. So far our newborn stash consists of: 10 lil' joeys AIO, 4 blueberry simplex AIO, 3 thirsties AIO, 1 thirsties size 1 pocket, 1 grovia AIO, 1 apple cheeks size 1 pocket, 1 tots bots AIO, 1 rumparooz cover, 2 prorap covers, and 6 thirsties size 1 covers. For inserts I have various prefolds, gdiaper inserts, microfiber, etc.

For after the newborn stage: 4 grovia hybrid, 1 imagine baby pocket, 2 blueberry simplex AIO, 3 thirsties size 2 covers, 3 fuzzibunz size medium pockets, 1 gdiaper size medium cover, 7 charlie banana pockets, 1 thirsties size medium fitted.

I purchased everything used except for 3 of the newborn blueberry, 2 OS blueberry and the OS imagine (free gift with purchase). I figure I'll work on the OS stash more once I know what I like and what fits him best.

I also have 2 planet wise hanging wet bags and my MIL is making cloth wipes.

What do people prefer to use for diaper cream?

Here's a photo of my newborn drawer :)

  • We used cloth with all of our kids and will for this baby as well (#4).  I've tried a lot of different diapers and like ebloom3 our workhorse ends up being green mountain diaper prefolds with thirsties covers.

I also have a trash can with a wet bag and a diaper sprayer attached to the toilet.  I use a water bottle with some tea tree oil and cloth wipes for cleanup.  I used to use pockets for overnights but ended up having stink issues ( bum genius with microfiber).  With DD I switched to wool and that worked a lot better.

I find that that cloth diapers work better and we never have blowouts like we've experienced with disposable. We use disposables on occasion when traveling or if we are out and about and in a hurry or sometimes for babysitters.
  • We did not with the first two, but are giving it a go this time.  I'm not down with all the lingo yet, so I only understand about 10% of the original post.   :D  I know I'll learn over time, though.  I have a few Thirsties and Apple (I think).  Plus, my friend sent me two boxes of CDs that they won't be using again.  I have maybe 20 diapers so far?

So far my stash consists of a ton of apple cheeks size 1s with 2 ply bamboo inserts, and a bunch of lil helper with snap in charcoal inserts. I plan on trying some more with the twins though since I need to double my stash for 2 kids lol!
  • Oh! I also love wool covers! As DS got older he was a heavy wetter and a prefold with a hemp doubler and a wool cover saved us!

  • My newborn stash consists of 36 newborn prefolds and a mix of Thirsties, Rumparooz, Bummis, Assunta tiny covers, and I hope to try Best Bottoms on my newborn too. We use almost exclusively Best Bottoms on our toddler. We love the snap in inserts and trim fit!
  • For those that are overwhelmed, I recommend finding an in person class if possible! That helped us a lot. And then, just go for it in terms of shopping. Find deals, get what you think is cute, whatever. You truly won't know what you like until you try them so I think it's smart to just get a variety. Don't worry about learning the lingo if it's not your thing.

Our NB stash is mostly prefolds and a few AIOs just for the diaper bag. Beyond NB, we used a huge mix but I ended up liking our pockets the best. They dried the fastest. We used cloth for a little over a year then had to give up when DD started daycare. At that point, we just didn't generate enough CD laundry in a weekend to make it worth it. I believe our new daycare takes cloth so I'm pumped about saving the money.

UO regarding cloth...Once we switched to disposables, I realized that cloth wipes suck. Most people say they're awesome. I don't know that we will use them again though.

  • @cafedisco I like cloth wipes before spraying is required. It's easier to just dump them in the bag with the diaper and not pick out the wipes. Beyond that we use disposable wipes for poops though and it seems like a lot of cloth parents do too.

"Pro tip": Water Wipes brand disposable wipes wash quite nicely and become liners ;)
  • I love cloth wipes! I feel like one, two max, takes care of super messy poops while disposable wipes just feel like they are wiping it around making more of a mess.

The ones wr we use are super soft and my kids prefer them for blowing noses, too.

  • I just don't like spraying cloth wipes because they don't stay in place like a diaper. We also use our wipes for noses!

  • That's our stash out for now. It's big, cause it's got NB and small prefolds and covers. DS was 10 pounds, so NB diapers worked for a week. I can take pictures of each individually if that makes it easier to see what things look like.

    I use disposable wipes.

I just never found that ours wiped as well as disposable ones did, even when I soaked them. I'll give them a go again but I won't sweat it if they don't work. I now use them for dusting and cleaning. :)

  • We are going to be cloth diapering this LO. It will be my first time. I do have a newborn stash. Like others have said it's always good to get a variety of types and brands (so I've read) as you don't know what you'll like and what will fit your LO best. For the NB stash I have a mix of prefolds/covers, AIO (Blueberry, thirsties and tots bots) and pockets (applecheeks). If you want to learn more (like I did), I suggest going on youtube and there are TONS of cloth diapering 101 blogs to learn from. They talk about everything from type of CD to laundering. Fluff Love University is also a great resource.
I also have a mix for baby stash - again I'm not sure what I'll like best or what will fit my LO best. As others have said there is a pretty big second hand market for CD (cloth diapers) so you can sell the ones you don't love and buy more of the ones that you do. I'm so excited to try CD and I really hope that it works out for us.

  • @Omie_Wise So far I've ordered from Kelly's Closet, Nicki's Diapers and Mom's Milk Boutique and have been happy. Kelly's Closet almost constantly has coupon codes for free diapers when you spend a certain amount and free shipping when you spend $25+. Nicki's just started doing free shipping when you spend $10, and also does a free gift when you spend $49+.

Another place to look for diapers is Craigslist, Offer Up and Facebook B/S/T groups in your area. Consignment sales are also great for finding used diapers, Jack and Jill and Just Between Friends are a couple that come to mind.
  • We really like Nicki's Diapers. I'll be stalking their site for a new St. Patrick's day diaper on 3/1!
  • We cloth diapered with our first, but just stuck with one brand. We have 25 AlvaBaby one size diapers with bamboo inserts. They are cute and were super affordable. We were a bit overwhelmed with all the cloth diaper lingo and just stuck with one brand. We are wanting to expand our stash now that we will have 2 in diapers. Wondering a couple things-

1- do one size fits all diapers work for newborns or are they typically too big for awhile?
2- any favorites for overnight? DS is 18 months old and can't wear a cloth diaper to bed without peeing through overnight.
  • One size don't fit without leg gapping/leaks until like 14ish lbs or so.

For overnights for my heavy wetters the only thing that works is fitteds + wool cover. We use twinkie tush night nights diapers and sloomb wool covers. Wool interlock works great, too.

  • @MWoodside I never ventured into the world of wool because it intimidated me...we always just did crazy huge diapers stuffed with tons of inserts for overnight.  DD also didn't sleep through the night until she was nearly 2 so we just changed her.

Do you have a good (easy) resource for how to learn to care for wool?
