Just for Fun: Baking Soda Gender Test

Alright, so I don't actually buy into things like this, but I thought it would be a fun experiment to try. We can compare these results to the true genders of our babies as we discover them. (Team Green, this is going to be a long wait for you!) Alright, ladies, let's do this for science!

Directions: Find a clear cup that you don't plan to drink from again. Put 2 tablespoons of baking soda into said cup. Pee into said cup. Watch for the magic!

Results: If it fizzes, you're supposedly having a boy. If it stays flat, you're supposedly having a girl.

Has anyone heard of this before?! Until today, I never had. If my directions are wrong, please advise. And if anyone wants to add more poll options, just say the word!

Also, I really hope nobody gets snobby, we all know this is just for fun and not scientific. I am very interested to see if it's right tho, this says boy and the Chinese calendar says girl. The Chinese calendar was right with DS! Again I know it's just for fun lol

@daniellelynette - Based on the extremely scientific way I wrote it up, I don't think anyone will.

The Chinese gender chart was wrong for me last time (no surprise there), but I do think things like that are fun to try, even though I don't believe in them. It's like people guessing at the gender of your baby based on how you're carrying or what you're craving. Let them guess away, but honestly, I don't think there's any correlation. It's just for fun.

ETA more words because I just can't help myself.

I've never heard this. I might just have to do this. I'm actually curious if it ever doesn't fizz. Seems to me it would always fizz.

@ElleKH when I was like nine weeks pregnant with DS my sister my sister told me "OMG you're carrying so low it must be a boy."

LOL well yeah I'm low the baby it still down in my pelvis lmao!

@DPandMB - I have a feeling it will have more to do with what you've had to eat and drink than anything else, but that's just a wild guess.

ETA @daniellelynette - And that's the thing! What people correlate with one gender or the other is never consistent! I've heard high carries are boys and low carries are girls, but I've heard it the other way around too. And here, in the Czech Republic, people are all about cravings associated with pregnancy. Salty and sour for boys and sweet for girls. They also say that if you stay beautiful throughout your pregnancy that you're carrying a boy, but if you don't, it's a girl because girls take their mother's beauty. So so bizarre...

I just totally did this and it fizzed. Chinese predictor also says boy. I think they are both wrong. I am convinced along with everyone else in my family that I am having another girl.

I also wonder like @DPandMB if it ever would not fizz. According to votes there is 1 non-fizzer so I guess so.

I previously heard something about the baking soda looking blue or green too. I had not heard about the fizzing.

As for the Chinese birth chart, it doesn't work for me. Ovulation was New Year's Eve. According to the birth chart if we conceived before the new year, it's a girl, but if we conceived after midnight, it's a boy. I have no idea what time the sperm met the egg.

The fizzing is based on the pH of your urine. More acidic urine will react with the baking soda (a weaker base). If your urine is more basic, it will not react with the baking soda. It's a fun little science experiment.

I haven't tried this yet but the Chinese gender calendar was correct with DS and this time says girl so I guess we will know in about a week!

I saw something similar to this on one of those "mountain bush men" shows. It's how the women who live extremely remotely find out if they are pregnant or not.

BUT I've also heard of this test too. I'm kinda interested to see what the results are. I'll take the "test" in the morning.

the Chinese gender chart was right with DS and it says this babe is going to be a boy as well.

We are expecting twins, so I don't think this will work for us! Chinese gender chart was correct with DD.

@HollyGolightly09 and @bridge-and-wall - I just looked into the color change results you mentioned and I think that's linked to a different test involving Drano. I avoid keeping strong chemicals like Drano in the house in general, and especially during pregnancy. But if you try it, let us know your results!
