Is there anybody out there that is in legal? I've been trying to figure out the law regarding time off for WA residents. If I'm reading this right, I'm legally allowed 18 weeks? Is that correct? My company changed our policy and from what they put out on our HR site, it looks like we only get 12 weeks now. But I thought WA law required 18? We used to get the 18, the 6 recovery weeks + the 12 FMLA weeks. I'm so confused now and am totally stressing out. I wasn't ready to tell work I'm pregnant yet so I've been trying to gather all the information from the internet for the time being. https://www.lni.wa.gov/WorkplaceRights/LeaveBenefits/FamilyCare/Maternity/

    Definitely call your HR and ask these questions. They cannot tell your manager or coworkers that youre asking about maternity leave policies; you don't even have to mention that you're pregnant. I had no idea any other state would allow that much leave! Fx for you!

    Call your HR. From what I understand, only FMLA is guaranteed (full time). Anything beyond that is up to the companies.

    I think this is what you're looking for. Read #1on here. It basically says that Washington state has FLA which runs concurrently with FMLA so normally you are only protected for the 12 weeks but in the case of using it for maternity leave Washington's FLA can't begin until your doctor releases you back to work so essentially you get your 6 to 8 weeks off and then you're 12 weeks of FLA can start.

    Thank you!!!!! @sugarpixxie2 that's what I was wondering. @kingfamilywife I'm not ready to tell HR yet. The leave lady is friends with my manager and I don't exactly get along with my manager...I know they are supposed to be confidential but let's be real. That rarely happens.

    So this sounds similar to Tn. Our FMLA is 12 weeks; however, in Tennessee there is a maternity law that allows 16 weeks off. It's a if you don't ask about it they don't offer it type leave. I didn't even know about it until my husbands coworker told him. My HR allows 16 weeks and my job is protected. I made sure to clarify about that.
