Surviving a cold while pregnant

I am on day 3 of a cold that just seems to be getting worse. With it being February, I am sure I am not alone. If I weren't pregnant, I'd make a pretty good dent in a bottle of NyQuil and sleep all day today. That's not an option now. I do have a list of approved medicine from my doctor, but I'm trying to restrain myself from taking too much medicine. So....

What are your best cold-fighting tips, recipes, and remedies for getting through a pregnancy cold?

Re: Surviving a cold while pregnant

  • All the chamomile tea and rest.
  • Loading the player...
  • Saline nose spray always helps me with congestion, and a warm compress usually relieve sinus pressure. Cold packs for head aches, and lots of fluids!

  • I gave in and went to emerge (had a fever with a bad chest cough). The dr and pharmacist both said Tylenol for my fever was ok, benylin dm was ok for my cough (I only take it at night so I can sleep).

Lots of water, tea, juice, soup and rest!!!!

hope you're feeling better. It's not fun being sick while being pregnant.
  • Peppermint, raspberry, and chamomile tea and lots of rest are my go to's. For allergies, I always try to use local honey in my tea. I have done this pre-pregnancy too.
  • Humidifier, Tylenol, and sleep.
  • I just got over a nasty cold. Tylenol and cough drops.

  • Some swear by apple cider vinegar... although I've read conflicting info about using the raw kind (braggs) during pregnancy. But, perhaps the pasteurized wouldn't hurt to try... desperate times call for desperate measures. Of course dilute in water and add a little honey. I tend to like the taste bc I'm grossly obsessed with vinegar based foods lol

  • Just getting over a cold too. Tylenol, humidifier, rest, and my doctor OK'd nasal decongestant (Otrivin).
  • Neti pot is great for relieving congestion.
  • My doctor ok'd coricidin HBP meds when I asked her. My allergies are KILLING me though as we're in south GA and the pollen is crazy already! Hot showers or baths with a little eucalyptus mint oil tend to help with my stuffed nose and a humidifier on my side of the bed!

I'd be careful with the hot showers and especially hot baths. They're usually not recommended.

I know not to let myself overheat. By hot I mean not scalding but hot enough to help loosen up the mucus in my head that's causing me horrid sinus headaches.
  • Resurrecting this thread...

I have zero "congestion" but I have a massive sinus headache that is just throbbing for 24 hrs straight now and if I turn my head any direction the throbbing gets worse and makes me want to throw up... I took a hot shower with no relief and have slept for most of the past 16 hours with no relief. Drinking water, too.

I want allergy medicine and a decongestant :( what did we decide was okay?  I was trying to search for the med list someone had.

  • @Sugargirl1019 I had the same issue for almost a week straight.  My midwife suggested taking a look at how much protein I am in taking.  Since that day I have upped my protein and have pretty much been headache free.
  • @Sugargirl1019 My Dr says these are okay:
sudafed, mucinex, Claritin D, Tylenol cold

  • Allergies here. I took some Claritin and it was the best sleep I've gotten this week.

Just  check the active ingredients in the Sudafed because they have maximum strength which I don't think can be taken.  I believe Mucinex D is safe and you can take it from behind the pharmacy counter. But, don't take too much of it. I think you should call your doctor.

Also, I highlyrecommend chicken soup. I had the flu with DS and it was pretty miserable. *feel better and they might want you to go into rule out flu.
  • A quick update on how my cold turned out.... I was so congested that my ears started to hurt and pop almost every time I swallowed. I was taking Sudafed (I tried both the kind you have to get behind the pharmacy counter with your ID and the Sudafed "PE" on the shelf) with no relief. I called my doctor and she said I could take Mucinex. I bought the 12 hour mucinex with both the expectorant and cough suppressant. I had no idea it could help unclog your sinuses and ears, but it worked and I got better a couple of days later. She also suggested Zyrtec. I took it and it also helped.

@Sugargirl1019 I totally feel your pain. I get lots of sinus headaches too, regardless of whether or not I'm sick. I would give Mucinex and Zyrtec a try if I were you. And some Tylenol. You could also try a cup of coffee. The caffeine from a grande Starbucks latte cured a headache for me last week. Feel better soon!

  • I'm a week into a cold. My midwife told me all I could take in first trimester was tylenol, push fluids and get rest. Finally starting to feel better, but now I gave my cold to the husband. Oops!
