Precautions for pregnancy in medical field?

Just wondering who is working in the medical field.  It seemed like there are a fair number of nurses and docs in the profession thread. What, if anything, are you mommas doing differently to keep you and baby safe?

I'm a veterinarian and need to take my own x-rays frequently and be in the OR with anesthetic gasses, etc. We're a very small practice and no doctor has ever been preggo in the history of the practice so there are no policies in place (that I know of). Not sure how the boss is going to react so would like to wait til after first appointment to tell her.

  • I'm not in the industry but my friend is in the business of selling these specialised x-ray aprons. Perhaps that is something you can look into so you can wear it over your whole body when you do x-rays.

  • I'm a SAHM but I also work as a social worker in a hospital. I remember asking this last time I was pregnant. My OB said the only precaution I needed to take was to ensure I don't interact with any patients with Shingles.

    Thanks for the reminder!
  • I'm a pharmacist in oncology.  Needless to say I'm not compounding or handling any chemotherapy.  I should also avoid my shingles patients, thanks for the reminder @mommac2017

  • ICU nurse here - I would have someone do your X-rays for you if possible, or just stay within the boundaries.  My friend is a vet tech and had to stay away from aggressive animals towards the end and wild animals as well!  Good luck!
  • I'm a nurse in a pediatric cardiac ICU. But in your case I would be particularly cognizant of any dogs with parvo. That must be avoided. Others are chemo drugs, active TB (do animals get tb?) and anything else that you would use standard precautions (glove, gowns and mask) should be fine with those barriers in place. You're a vet so I'm sure most of that is common sense for you. Any other vet friends at different practices you could ask? Maybe they have more experience with pregnant docs.
  • I know a lot of this might not be animals but here is the list we go by at my hospital. I'm a peds ICU nurse. No to Parvo, CMV+, TB, for x-rays we leave the room before they shoot (lead apron or not), don't stay in the room for CTs or MRIs, I don't hang chemo but I take care of those patients actively receiving with extra precautions, and also no to HSV
