  • That's so scary! Glad everything is ok @silliegirlie143

  • @silliegirlie143 glad you are ok!

Everyone one who is sick or dealing with sick loved ones, I hope everyone gets better quick!
  • @silliegirlie143 so glad you're ok.  That is one of my worst fears is falling down the stairs.  I have two small flights of stairs to go down to our basement and I'm always terrified I'm gonna fall down them pregnant because I've done it several times not pregnant.

Add me to the sick group.  I got home from Illinois late Tuesday night.  Was feeling awful most of the time I was there and I blame my mom's smoking around me as the thing that got this started.  It's an awful upper respiratory issue.

  • DD has been breaking out in hives for the last week and I am still waiting on the doctors office to refer her to an allergist. We're all in agreement that she's allergic to something, just not sure what. There is nothing new both food and environment-wise. Monday she had what looked like one massive welt across her whole back :(

Anyone dealt with this before? How long would you wait before calling the doctor again about the referral?
  • @Heliumgirl717 do you need a referral? I would wait a day then call back with the name of a pediatric allergist who accepts your insurance and ask for hem to refer you there. If you do not need a referral for your insurance I would just make an appt.
    DD 1- born January 22, 2014

  • Thanks for all your thoughts! I feel like i was in a car accident with the stiff neck and low range of motion. On the plus side: guess who's working from home today? THIS girl!

@Heliumgirl717 I second the suggestion to call with the referral you want. Taking the leg work out of the equation may speed the process.

  • @Heliumgirl717 when I was 16 I started having allergic reactions to something and we couldn't figure out what was causing it. My reactions started as eye swelling and hives and slowly progressed to full blown anaphylaxis. We made our own appt with the allergist in town who actually referred us to a pediatric specialist at Children's. After a year and a half of cutting things out of my diet and keeping extensive intake logs, we realized I was allergic to NSAIDS. I'd call and try to get in without the referral and go from there. Good luck! I hope you guys get it figured out soon!!

@huskermom14 I'm allergic to NSAIDs too!  I found out through a slow progression over the past 3 years where I had slight eye swelling to the last time I took it was August 2014 and I ended up in the ER.... I took 800mg motrin after my C-section and grew up taking advil for sports injuries in high scool... no idea where this allergy came from!!  Did your allergist ever get the cause figured out or do more testing to determine which ones you might be able to take?  My allergist just gave me an Rx for an EpiPen and said they couldn't delineate between the different NSAIDS meds unless they pumped me with all of them separately and waited... so they didn't do it.  I'm concerned about pain management options post C-section now...I don't want to take narcotics.
  • @Heliumgirl717 We thought DS2 developed an allergy last year and went through a ton of tests.  It turned out he just gets really bad winter eczema and it looks like allergy welts when it shows up.

  • @Heliumgirl717 This probably isn't the case but thought I'd mention it if for some reason they can't figure out the cause... When I was a teenager I developed some type of contact hives. I believe it was worse in the winter/cold conditions. If I scratched or ran in to something or someone applied too much pressure to my skin I would get a hive in that shape. My friends had fun writing their names and drawing pictures on my arms. It would take awhile for the hive to go away but they always did. Nothing in my diet/environment had changed. I think it only really happened that one year and maybe very sporadically after.
Good luck - I hope you can get in to an allergist soon and get some answers!

  • Just throwing this out there about the hives - my DH has been "allergic to cold" since he was a kid.  If his skin gets cold (like when swimming or if exposed in winter) it turns red and swells a little bit just like hives.

  • @michaela0704 that's similar to what happened to me! I'd take an advil or ibuprofen for a headache or cramps or something and not think anything of it and then eventually we were like woah, there's a connection here! We never did testing to determine how it came to be. I pretty much avoid taking anything for pain unless I'm really hurting so I don't build up a tolerance to Tylenol (and because it's so bad for your body).

I took Tylenol #3 a couple times after my delivery, although it was vaginal so completely different. We have some moms on my unit at work that do really well without narcotics post c-sections, so maybe you'll be one of them! Is there a reason you don't want to do narcotics?
  • This is going to be a pat me on the head and tell me I don't suck haha.  My kids have their second tee ball practice today.  My husband has a work event and can't go.  The practices are very heavy on parent help because the kids are three and four and I just don't know if I have it in me to wrangle them both on my own tonight. I feel terrible not going, Mom guilt is the worst.

My cousin is allergic to cold! So much that she has an epi pen and they moved from IL to AZ a few years ago!

  • Can any mamas recommend a straw sip cup that doesn't leak? DD is approaching 18 months and we're trying to get rid of her last 2 bottles but she won't take a decent quantity of milk from a cup. Or, any other suggestions? Thanks!
  • edited February 2017
@mamaelle27 DD uses the straw cup by CamelBack
We have not had a problem with it leaking. Took her a couple tries to get the hang of it (you have to bite the straw a little to get fluid to flow) now she love she it!
We picked up one of the "holiday" designs for cheap... maybe $5 at REI?

ETA: wtf was that auto correct??

  • @huskermom14 it is so strange to me... how these allergies just show up over time with people taking them previously without issue.  I've never taken narcotic pain killers and have made it through my other surgeries on 800mg motrin as I just don't want to tempt myself... I know people that were just 'normal' people and next thing you know they were addicted to pain pills that they first got for after a surgery... their life was in ruins.  I just don't want to deal with the potential if I can help it.

@mamaelle27 we have the camelback straw cups and they do a pretty good job.  I would say, unfortunately, that all the cups we tried ended up leaking eventually... we always ended up with a random spill/puddle.
  • @mamaelle27 we use the Playtex straw cups with no leaking issues and the straw is wide for easy cleaning.
  • Thanks for the recommendation and insight @huskermom14 I have been afraid of the same thing happening to DD with whatever is setting her off. It is a good thing I called because the allergy clinic had the referral for 2 days and didn't contact me. The lady I spoke to at first was so rude that I was about to get mean with her. The closest we can get her in is for an appointment in 3 weeks, so we'll have to monitor and hope it doesn't develop into a more serious reaction.

As for the being allergic to cold ... I had no idea people could be! I would hope it's not that because Indiana is generally pretty chilly during the winter, but thankfully we are looking at 60 degree days next week!

@mamaelle27 We use the munchkin straw cups and they seem to do pretty well. You can even shut them so the straw isn't exposed, which helps when DD has a cup of water on the go!
  • I cut DS' hair for the first time today. It was long overdue, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it! Thankfully it only got curlier! I was afraid that I'd cut the curls off.
  • Totally understandable @michaela0704. Narcs can be scary. Don't be afraid to use them in the hospital at the very least if you need to. Hopefully your OB will have a good alternative for you to take that works well for you!

@Heliumgirl717 I'm glad you at least got her in and got the ball rolling. I hope the next 3 weeks fly by event free for you guys!
  • @silliegirlie143 that's crazy! I hope you feel better. Didn't you also have a burnt palms incident?!
  • @Heliumgirl717 I live in Indiana. One of the kids I treat came in yesterday with a rash on his face. The school nurse said it was heat rash, but me and the OT side eyed that bc this kid loves being outside all summer and mom said he'd never had heat rash. I wonder if it could be due to weather somehow though. It could also be completely unrelated.  Haha. I hope it gets better soon

No burned palms for me, but I did also fall 2 weeks ago. This is part of the reason the Doc decided the benefits of a CT scan outweighed the risk.

Dermatographism! I've got the same thing. Worst during early teenage years, but pops up
periodically and gets worse with stress too.

  • My phone has recently been only partly charging at night or not charging at all and I forgot to check it when I woke up this morning.  Of course it is already on 50% battery, so now I have to be very purposeful with my phone checking today.  First world problems, but so annoying!

  • Ugh...guys...I'm dying at my job.  I'm in the running for another position, but I won't hear anything for another few weeks.  I'm worried about what I'll do if I don't get it...I'm not sure what else there is for me here at this company.  This has me ridiculously stressed out.

  • I mentioned in some other thread that kids at my part time job had RSV last week! Then I saw an article on the news that it is going around. So I read more about it and apparently it can just be cold symptoms. So now I'm worried I have RSV! Any of you healthcare workers know if you can have RSV with no fever? I messaged my Dr but who knows when I'll hear back. Just thought I'd ask here too!

  • @alm52386 I would think either way, it's just a virus and needs to run its course (fever or no fever). What makes you so worried about it specifically being RSV as an adult? As far as I'm aware, RSV is really only problematic/scary for kiddos.

  • I feel like a FTM sometimes. DD is 3.5 and it is as if I have forgotten all things about taking care of a newborn. I need to start reading up again I guess. DH is just as bad. We saw a friend burping their baby and he forgot we will have to do that. It was almost like I was more prepared the first time because I was only focusing on how to take care of a newborn rather than also going through what should a 3 year old be able to do and practicing fine and gross motor skills.

Because I work with young kids so I'm worried about passing it on to them!

  • Awww @devow27 he's a cutie. I had a yellow female lab and she passed a couple years ago (arthritis). She was the sweetest furriest couch potato ever. I miss her.
  • @alm52386 oh, it came off like you were worried for yourself in the post. There's nothing more you can do outside of disinfecting your work area, toys and washing your hands, just like with any other virus. I work in peds as well. Not sure what your OB would have told you but I'm guessing it's the same thing as I did.

@beckij34 thank you. I love him dearly! He's totally a lazy old man these days.
