  • Again, who are you?
  • Also, thank you!

  • You can introduce yourself in our intro thread pinned at the top of the main June 2017 page. That would help people get to know you and want to chat more. I doubt most of us will be packing hospital bags until closer to our due dates unless we have a reason to believe we are likely to go into labor very early. There are a lot of lists out there you could find on Google if you want to get started early though.
  • @zasunbaby16 this really depends on whether you are going to a hospital or birth center bc supplies and expected length of stay vary. Also its really early to pack now. Try pinterest for ideas. Also please introduce yourself and participate in some threads. The group would be more willing and able to support you if we knew more about you.

  • I have a running list. Couldn't find my list from the last time.

    Hospital Bag
    Robe
    Pajamas
    Pads
    Bras (regular and breast feeding)
    A&D ointment

    Shower Shoes
    Extension cord
    Chargers
    Laptop
    Soap

  • @doodleoodle I just spit my water out at your last 2 list items... very true though, very true!!!
  • I actually used my makeup and flatiron. But we ended up having a longer than usual stay because we stayed at the hospital while my little was in the NICU.

Also, if I packed this soon I guarantee I'd have to re-wash the clothes several times because I don't like when clothes just sit in a bag. I feel like they need to be aired out or it loses it's yummy clean smell.
  • Most Pinterest lists say to not bother with makeup,  but, um, no. I got ready each morning as usual just as if I was at home - shower, did my hair, put contacts in, makeup, earrings. I wanted to feel as much like myself as possible. I will absolutely take all of those items again.

That said, unless you are high risk on some way, it is way too early to start packing.
  • I also actually used my flat iron. No makeup, but I have short hair- so I wanted my flat iron since I can't just throw my hair up in a ponytail.
  • I'm not a flatiron user but I do use makeup most days so it was no different when I was at the hospital after giving birth - I used my makeup both times. I think it just depends on how it goes. If you don't have a crazy difficult birth, and you normally do your hair and your makeup, in all likelihood, you will do it at the hospital, too.

I will not be giving my hospital bag any thought until about 36w!

  • I brought my hairdryer, flat iron, and makeup.... Used none of it.  At the time I didn't care because I felt awful (laboring for 2.5 days and then a c-section).... However, now I wish I WOULD have used them because I will not share ANY pictures that have me in them from when DD was born bc my hair and face look SUCH a hot mess.  And I really am not vain....... I look SO bad in them all.

  • I don't think anyone should be ashamed for using makeup and styling their hair at the hospital. If anything, I'm jealous you had the energy! I had an c section with DD and couldn't stand up straight for days. I barely was able to shower while at the hospital.

I just thought of something that now may actually be good timing for. From what I hear, immediately post partum, most women are about the size they were  5-6 months pregnant. So now may be a good time to take stock of what you have that fits you well (or go shopping) to plan for what to bring as a going home outfit or what to wear around the hospital if you hate hospital gowns like I do. (I mean, I will wear it for labor, but I dint want to wear it for two days afterwards).

Also, I will be bringing makeup. I actually don't wear it much normally, but it made me feel better when I felt gross after birth last time. Plus the hospital had a newborn photographer that came around, and throwing on lipstick and mascara before getting family pics taken made a big difference.
  • I think I packed my bag about a month out. We thought he was going to come early, because I had been on full bedrest for most of the pregnancy. I was due July 24th and packed as soon as they lifted the restriction in late May.

I have to add loose adjustable cotton pants that can be pulled up above c-section incision.

  • @ellie111227 Yes! Now is the time to figure out what clothes might be the most "flattering" to wear right after baby. I looked about 6 months pregnant for that first day, then gradually began to shrink down over the next couple of days.
I packed maternity clothing last time, so it obviously fit, but all of my maternity tops are fitted and snug so it still showed off the belly (and PP belly is NOT something to show off). I'm going to pack empire waisted dresses and loose nursing tops this time around.
  • @delujm0 has an excellent and comprehensive list. My bottle of Colace has already been purchased.

My two additions: Chapstick and hair ties. And backup Chapstick. And extra hair ties.

To the earlier point about clothing size, my interesting issue was that my feet swelled up after having DD far more than they did during my pregnancy - while I managed to squeeze my feet into my shoes to get home, I definitely wore DH's sneakers for a few days afterwards!

    A bottle of champagne

Oh yes. Champagne, wine, beer, whatever seems the most festive to you! My hospital has a mini-fridge in PP rooms and we definitely used it.

@ellie111227 yessss! Sometimes, you're SO pumped full of fluids that you are insanely swollen. I seriously had NO CLUE that was possible. I was crazy bloated for the first 5 days after my c section and wore exactly what fit me at time of delivery. By the end of our second week I was down 30 lbs.
So, be prepared with loose clothes!

I had everything with me since I was living in the hospital so I'm kind of feeling like a FTM when it comes to packing my hospital bag. A few things I did use right after DS was born are:

    Nursing tanks
    Comfy robe
    Lotion
    Chapstick
    Nipple Cream
    Cozy socks
    Toothbrush/paste
    Shampoo/Conditioner/body wash
    Brush
Make up (I wore light powder and mascara)
    Blow dryer

I personally wouldn't bring beloved clothes, undies or really anything cloth that you love a lot. You have no idea the level of bodily fluids coming out of you, so leave that to the hospital's extra large pads and mesh undies.

  • Just remembered...because I was continuing to go to work every day until I went into labor with DD, there was a chance I'd be going directly to the hospital from the office.  So don't forget to throw a pair of flip flops in your bag or something.  I wound up going into labor on a Sunday so it wasn't a big deal, but if I'd rolled up in there in my heels and dress and then had to wear the heels home with my sweatpants I would have felt like an idiot. :-)

Yes to Chapstick.  And I couldn't get my wedding ring back on until about 3w PP.  Sooo much swelling.

Also, if you do a hospital tour, ask what their policy is with supplies...I have friends that said they had a "limit" on the amount of mesh panties, giant pads, ice packs, etc that could be provided during their stay.  At my hospital it's unlimited, they just restock as needed.  So I just put the mesh panties they had left me in my bag once a day and asked for more so I could have them at home.  They're awesome.  I hated the giant pads though, they were super bulky - I preferred getting thin overnight pads with wings instead once I was home.  I mean what is the point of a pad without wings, honestly.  I may bring some of those along this time.

  • I brought my own pillow but I am super picky about pillows. It was nice to have something comfortable to sleep on.

  • I packed my birthing center bag/hospital bag early (28 weeks or so) when pregnant with DS and so glad I did because he was born prematurely. That being said there are some things I wish I had packed that my mom who happened to be in town for my baby shower 2 days earlier brought.

Things I'm glad I brought: own nipple cream (honest co), nursing tank, comfy stretchy maternity yoga pants, slippers, robe, colace, my own shower toiletries. Things I wish I had packed that my mom brought: towel (hospital ones are less than soft), hairbrush, nursing tea, postpartum bottom spray (earth mama angel baby- smells so good and super soothing), chapstick, water bottle.

I packed a separate bag for DS with take home outfit etc that obviously got adjusted and not used for 2 weeks while he was in NICU. Also my DH wished he had packed his own bag as he did not anticipate we'd be having the baby the day my water broke, so he was in the same clothes for a few days.

    I'm packing snacks this time.
^^snacks are a great idea. We were in the hospital a lot longer than I expected. Plus hospital snacks were expensive.

Hand soap is in my list. I absolutely hate the smell of the hospital soap.

My hospital gave me name brand nipple cream, stool softeners and AD ointment. I would recommend taking that stuff just in case but always ask to see what they have and save yours for home.

Also not all hospitals give out wipes. Ours doesn't, they gave us precut cloths to dip into water. They worked okay in the hospital but make sure you have wipes for going home.

Ugh! I forgot about this. My hospital had wipes, but they were dry. You had to get them wet before being able to use them. It was such a pain with that sticky newborn poop. I'll definitely pack wipes this time. Thanks for the reminder!
  • You guys are making me feel uber-spoiled with my hospital! They provide everything and (at least with my insurance) there is no extra fee for all the food/snacks/drinks I want, pads, mesh panties, dermoplast spray, etc, or baby supplies (diapers, wipes, etc.). They even let us take the baby wash cloths and kimono/wrap style t-shirts from our room, plus they give each new baby a bathtub and scalp/hair scrub brush. Plus free lactation consulting for the first week after baby is born. And my insurance isn't even that good!
  • @ladylolly89, maybe it's a Nebraska thing because we got all of the same.
  • @ladylolly89 and @Stankonia2014 mine as well. They provide everything!!!
  • Our hospital is great too. I stayed for 5 days and it felt like a hotel. I had to make sure I had room in my bag because they would tell me to empty out the baby cart (diapers, swaddles, etc) each day so they could refill it.

Do you know anyone who has given birth at your hospital? Nearly everyone that I know gives birth at my hospital (it's the "baby" hospital in my city) so I texted a couple of friends before packing.

If your hospital offers maternity ward tours I highly suggest one.  You can get questions like this answered and also get comfortable with the place you'll be delivering.  It's really worth it.
  • Here's a hospital checklist for mom, dad, and baby that you may find helpful - https://bestcarseats.org/hospital-bag-checklist/

  • @ladylolly89 The hospital I'm giving birth at is so new (like around 2 years old) so I don't know anyone personally who has delivered there. It's part of a big health services provider in my county that has 2 other hospitals in the area which have been around a long time (I do know a few ladies who have delivered at these other hospitals). This one was opened specifically as a women's hospital so their primary specialty is L&D. I'm hoping that means they are well equipped for my needs once I get there!

@delujm0 We have our tour scheduled for March 4th. Good idea to ask these questions so I get a better idea of what to expect.

We attended a maternity center tour at our hospital over the weekend. I was really irritated when they gave us paperwork and in there they had a list of what to pack in your labor bag, your postpartum bag and your baby bag and to leave the second two in the car during labor. WHY would a pregnant lady want to pack and remember three separate bags? During the actual tour they said we can pack it together and bring it all in at once and I had a huge sigh of relief. The paperwork and tour was very helpful though, I would recommend going to one if you are offered.
