Re: This is Us Discussion - "I Call Marriage" 2/7
Toby - Coming to the camp, good or bad idea? I initially thought it was a bad idea for him to have came. He was making Kate mad by being there. But then the reason he came, the ring, that was too sweet!
Randall - His change at work, do you think it’s a by product of William coming into his life? What do you think is wrong with his hand? It appears that Randall's focus at work has been shifted away some. I can't believe it's only due to William coming into his life. Maybe things were going down a bit before William came in. I think Randall might be having some form of panic attack that shows through his hands (I don't know much about panic attacks though).
Jack & Rebecca - Do you think things were "rocky?" The surprise from Jack, what are your thoughts? I think things were just as they are for most marriages. They had lost some luster. I find myself watching Jack and the things he does and getting envious of the things he does as a husband for Rebecca. The surprise was no different. I thought it was so sweet and seemed to have perfect timing.
Duke - What’s your prediction going forward? I REALLY hope Kate is going to the cabin to tell him to leave her alone!
Other thoughts during this episode? I think Kevin does have issues with Miguel and you saw that with his conversations with Sophie. We now know that Rebecca and Miguel have been married for over 12 years.

-I want to know more about what their relationship was like. Cheating is definitely no bueno, but it's been such a long time, I'd want to know what was going on.
Toby - Coming to the camp, good or bad idea?
-I'm not big on surprises, so I understood Kate's frustration. Especially since she's in this zone where she's working on herself, Toby is a reminder of the real world. Toby means well, but I'm not sure this was the right time/place.
Randall - His change at work, do you think it’s a by product of William coming into his life? What do you think is wrong with his hand?
-I think Randall is going to have to make some more changes in his life. He seems like the sort of guy that played by the rules and always put in 110% at work, but is now figuring out how to balance family life, too. (BTW, I've been working my way through The People vs. OJ Simpson and I'm really enjoying Sterling K. Brown in it. He's making me like Randall more).
Jack & Rebecca - Do you think things were "rocky?" The surprise from Jack, what are your thoughts?
-I think things were in a rut like what happens in long term relationships. It's clear though that they are both grateful for each other. Jack's surprise was sweet if a bit corny, lol. It was probably a good reminder of how far they'd come.
Duke - What’s your prediction going forward?
-Ugh, this motherfucker. Does anyone ever come on this strong in real life? What is his deal? I'm sure Kate is going to make some bad decisions with him.
Other thoughts during this episode?
I find Miguel to have a punchable face. That's all.
I think Randall's work problem is a direct result of William being in his life, as it would be out of character for him to not be on point otherwise. William's death is going to hard on him & the family. @SpotConlon I just finished the OJ show, and Sterling was brilliant! He gets more involved each episode.
Can I just say how much I love Toby?! He is truly in love with Kate, and I think he had good intentions, but she needs to focus on herself. @bumpybump Wasn't the ring sweet?! Duke is toxic. Hopefully she's going in there to tell him what an awesome guy Toby is (like Rebecca did with her bandmate about Jack).
I also find Miguel to have a punchable face. Can't wait to find out how they ended up together.

Hmmm that's a tough one. I probably would have met him. Not sure about giving him another chance though. But so many years have gone by, and people change. It seems like she still has feelings for him. I hope they get together, because I've not seen him act like that or have feelings that strong for anyone else!
Toby - Coming to the camp, good or bad idea?
Also mixed on this one. His intentions were really sweet, but I feel like he should have stayed away. Or at least asked her if she wanted him to visit. But I'm glad he met Duke because he knows he kinda needs to look out for him now.
Randall - His change at work, do you think it’s a by product of William coming into his life? What do you think is wrong with his hand?
I do think so. Before William, Randall was 150% work. William has helped him see the value of life and relationships and how the ones we love can be gone sooner than we think or hope. I'm dreading the episode when William dies. I'm going to be hysterical. I have no clue what is wrong with his hand. Tremors of some sort I'd assume.
Jack & Rebecca - Do you think things were "rocky?" The surprise from Jack, what are your thoughts?
I would not use the term rocky. I would say they hit a norma
l low point that all marriages have. Not rocky to the point of cheating, but just a low that you have to work towards to bring back up. Jack's surprise was so sweet. I agree with @bumpybump that I find myself getting kinda jealous of all the sweet things Jack says and does.
Duke - What’s your prediction going forward?
Gahhh this dude pisses me off!! I screamed at the TV when she was walking towards his cabin. She better be going just to tell him to back the hell off!!
Other thoughts during this episode?
First episode I didn't cry in! Woop, go meee!!
I like Kevin and Sophie and glad she showed up. Sounds like they were just very young and immature when they got married and divorced. They've grown and changed and she must still feel something for him or she wouldn't have met him.
It's clear that she still had some feeling for him or else she wouldn't have met him the second time. I'm not sure the context of their previous relationship so it's hard to say what I would do. But I would definitely be curious.
Toby - Coming to the camp, good or bad idea?
There were pros and cons to the situation. His heart is in the right place and he really loves Kate but Kate seems to do everything she can to push people away. So maybe he can find someone better.
Randall - His change at work, do you think it’s a by product of William coming into his life? What do you think is wrong with his hand?
Definitely think the issues are related to William and just the impending deterioration of Williams health but I don't think that's the only thing going on there. I think maybe he's dealing with stress tremors.
Jack & Rebecca - Do you think things were "rocky?" The surprise from Jack, what are your thoughts?
I know jack has his issues but I think he really tries to show Rebecca how much he loves her and wants to make their marriage last. The more I see from Rebecca, the more I dislike. I have a growing suspicion that Rebecca and Miguel had an affair before jack died.
Duke - What’s your prediction about duke?
I wasn't a fan originally but I actually think he's going to get more to the core of what Kate is really struggling with, that Toby ever could. I don't necessarily want them to be together but I do think he's an essential part of Kate unraveling and really letting go of whatever is killing her inside.

I don't know about giving him another chance. I don't blame her for meeting up with him necessarily. I do find it a little weird that if she is in fact dating someone nice, why she would meet up with him since it is obvious that he wants a romantic relationship with her.
Toby - Coming to the camp, good or bad idea?
I think it is both. I like that he wanted to give her the ring and that he felt like he needed to be with her because he is scared about having another heart attack. I didn't like that he fell back on old habits and didn't take it seriously when he did say that he was staying at the camp.
Randall - His change at work, do you think it’s a by product of William coming into his life? What do you think is wrong with his hand?
Yes, I think it is a by product of William coming back into his life. I think that family and the importance of family are lessons that he needs right now. I think he is having panic attacks, although initially I was scared that he was developing some disease like Parkinson's and just they hadn't shown him having any episodes prior to this.
Jack & Rebecca - Do you think things were "rocky?" The surprise from Jack, what are your thoughts?
I think things were a part of the normal progression when you have been married a lot by time. I did think the surprise was really sweet, if unrealistic. I was not particularly happy with Rebecca telling him that she wanted to go on tour with the guy that obviously (to us at least) has a thing for her and is trying to undermine their relationship.
Duke - What’s your prediction going forward?
I think Kate is going to torpedo her life (what seems to be a habit of hers,) with Duke. I hope it helps her get a place where she is able to stop sabatoging herself and get to a place where she can cope and heal from all the issues that have plagued her for her whole life. That doesn't make me happy about the situation though. I like Toby and the fact that he appears to make Kate happy.
Other thoughts during this episode?
I didn't like that Randall wasn't telling his wife what was going on. I felt like they had better communication together than that.
Not on this episode, but I also read a theory about how Jack died and I am irrationally upset about it and I hope that it isn't actually the case. Does anyone think we will find out this season how Jack dies? Or do you think they will drag it out a little longer? I know I have read that they have already renewed it for 2 more seasons, so I was just wondering what others thought about that.

I think its super sweet that she seems to be giving him a second chance. They were married so young (they got divocred around 24!) and I think they might have a good chance if they decided to try again.
Toby - Coming to the camp, good or bad idea?
I think the ring was so sweet, but I do feel like he is so attached! I think she went to the camp to get some breathing room, and him showing up is not helping.
Randall - His change at work, do you think it’s a by product of William coming into his life? What do you think is wrong with his hand? I think its a complete by product of William coming into his life. I think for once he is gaining some perspective, and learning that he needs to put family first. I think his hand might just be because he is stressing out and not knowing how to deal with the change.
Jack & Rebecca - Do you think things were "rocky?" The surprise from Jack, what are your thoughts?
I think it was so sweet. Jack seems to be the ideal man, and I love that he tries so hard for her all the time. She can drive me nuts, because she doesn't seem to see it, and that makes me sad for Jack.
Duke - What’s your prediction going forward? I just hope that she is going there to tell him to back off, but I dont think thats the case. I do think that she might need to have Duke in her life to get her to open up, but I dont want him to get in the way of her and Toby.

Kevin & Sophie - He cheated! Would you have met him and/or give him another chance?
Well, she doesn't seem to know what a player he has been since... so I think she will. I believe once a cheater always a cheater. He doesn't seem to put much time or effort into any relationship.
Toby - Coming to the camp, good or bad idea?
Toby is my favorite. He can do no wrong in my eyes!
Randall - His change at work, do you think it’s a by product of William coming into his life? What do you think is wrong with his hand?
I think William has grounded Randall. He sees that family is more important than work now, and he's finally feeling connected to a family member. I don't know about the hand...
Jack & Rebecca - Do you think things were "rocky?" The surprise from Jack, what are your thoughts?
I don't get it. They seem great except for that one episode with Jack drinking. The tour part obviously bothers him, especially with her ex being involved. I think the ex is a jerk. Love those lights and the romanticism of going back to their old place.
Duke - What’s your prediction going forward?
He's a trouble maker and boosts Kate's confidence. However, the relationship between Kate & Toby will only get stronger.
Other thoughts during this episode?
I don't like Miguel.

Jack reminds me of my own husband. He probably wouldn't rent out our old apartment and leave lit candles in it until he returned but! I still consider myself a very lucky girl. I really hope Rebecca doesn't cheat on him with Miguel. MIguel is skeevy and annoying.
Duke on the other hand, needs to go away. He is so negative to everyone at a place that is supposed to be helping people! I really hope that she's going to his cabin to show off her ring.
I think between the pressure of his job, his father slowly dying and his stress of his daughters getting hurt is taking a toll on him. We will see him get sick himself out of stress, hence the shaky hands.

@bumpybump It definitely made me think about stuff DH does for me that I take for granted. It really is sometimes the littlest things that mean the most that we tend to forget about and/or take for granted.
@hupp0013 @littlebug2010 I will say that time and age can make all the difference in the world for a relationship. DH and I got married when we were young. He was 22 and I was 21. We were high school sweethearts, the whole shebang. Got divorced just after a year of marriage (not due to cheating though). Somehow we rekindled things down the road and got back together. Got remarried when we were 28/27, and things are SOOOO different this time around!
