Allergy relief?

I work in a new- still under construction- building. The dust around here is unreal. Dust allergies + pregnancy rhinitis has been challenging. By 10am I can hardly breath. Every night and morning I am using a neti pot (shudder) and Ive tried other saline sprays. I know benadryl is safe but it knocks me out so not ideal for work. Anyone have other suggestions of what I can do to catch a little relief?

Re: Allergy relief?

  • I am sooooo with you! I can relate so much to that gif lol! I take Zyrtec and am about to start using a neti pot as well (last resort as I hate it!) but I have chronic rhinitis too and now it's being exacerbated by pregnancy rhinitis uggghhhh. Afrin nasal spray works so amazingly but you cannot use it a lot or you will suffer rebound congestion, also sudafed used to be the only thing that would help me but my doc doesn't let me take it while pregnant.  Sorry I don't really have any advice or help to offer. I am really just watching this thread for some advice too!

  • Wait, pregnancy rhinitis is a thing?!  Mind. Blown.  I'm up at 3am daily sneezing like I just put my face in a pile of dust!  I second the Zyrtec... it dries me out pretty good but with the good comes the bad -- it makes me soooooo sleepy.

  • Y'all, my allergies are Ca-Ra-Zay.  I'm miserable!  Zyrtec, Flonase, Benadryl...I just want to stop sneezing!

  • Misery loves company I guess! @SugarRush It sure is a thing. I had it last time as well but its 10X worse this pregnancy.  I'll have to look up the brands you guys listed. I am in Canada so we don't always have the same stuff/ ingredients lists can vary.

  • I got this from my OB...was surprised that Flonase was added!

  • Oh good, I'm hitting up my Dr for a flonase refill, haha.  I take loratadine and try not to use afrin too much, but it sure does help.  I take Allegra d when I'm not pregnant, but since it's a no no now.. sigh.

  • @Texafornian Your OK meds list has more allowable meds than the list the MFM gave us. Her list only has Claratin, saline spray, and Vick's vapor rub for nasal congestion. Tylenol is on there too but my sheet says only after 12 weeks. I wonder why the difference?
  • @JNR6510 no idea. It's bigger than my list from my previous OB as well. I say err on the side of caution...use stuff MINIMALLY and only if you REALLY need it. I even treat Tylenol that way...don't take unless I'm dying.

  • I was surprised at some of the stuff on my list from my new OB. I'll post a pic later, but I'm pretty sure miralax is on there and I thought I wasn't supposed to take that. I too only take meds while pregnant if I'm dying. I'd rather not even chance it.
  • I have awful sinuses already but they have been debilitating the last few days. Thank you for the list of medicines! I wasn't sure if Tylenol and Benadryl were ok, I was about to call my Dr. I had 3 sinus infections last PG and had to have prescribed antibiotics each time.

For me the only relief I get is from Neti pots, steamy showers, humidifiers with peppermint EO added to the water and ice packs on my face.

  • I have had a sinus infection and ear infection over the last two weeks so Claratin, Sudafed, and ibuprofen have been life savers. I live in super dry Utah so I've been sleeping with a humidifier pointed at my face.

@Texafornian my list is way shorter! But includes different stuff with what weeks its safe to take it. My ob says ibuprofen is safe until 20 something weeks and to use tylenol sparingly.

  • @Souptin I had this problem my last pregnancy too, but I never attributed it to having to do with the pregnancy!  This whole thread makes me feel sooo  much better, I thought maybe it was just the crazy Chicago weather we've been having this winter!

@Texafornian I LOVE that Flonase was added to your list!!  I thought it was on the no-no list so I stopped... I'll need to re-visit this at my next appt (or maybe sooner depending on how much longer I can stand to go without it!).

Yeah the only things my Dr will clear for allergies are benadryl, claritin and rhinocort. I asked specifically about flonase because Ive seen other people say they take it and its the only thing that works for me. But I got a big fat no :(

  • My allergies were actually the first thing that tipped me off that I was pg- I had terrible pregnancy rhinitis with my DD to the point I swear my nose got bigger at the end. I've been taking Claritin or Zyrtec in the morning and Benadryl at night but I find very little relief. I feel ya ladies! Fellow sufferer here!
  • Both my OB and MFM are good with Flonase, but I still use it very sparingly.  I do take daily Zyrtec or Claritin, and sometimes will take Benadryl if I'm super miserable.
