Missed the muscle in the PIO shot?

I have been giving myself the PIO shots. I alternate sides every day and I usually feel that the needle gets into the muscle. Especially since I can't really draw back.

This morning, however, I was easily able to draw back and even got a little bubble... and then, without thinking just continued with the shot...

Is it bad if I gave it in the fat and not in the muscle? Will it not work?

Re: Missed the muscle in the PIO shot?

  • @Prudence9 I don't think you've given it in fat just because you drew back and there was a small bubble. I give myself PIO shots and get a small bubble every time. I was worried that since I had moved a little higher and more to the side than I was directed, that I was doing it wrong. However, my RE checked the spots Thursday and said it was fine. Everything from that day was fine, so I don't think you have anything to worry about there. Good luck!

  • Thanks for your reply @Kp214 the reason I think it wasn't in the muscle is because when I'm in the muscle I have high resistance when I try to draw back. But this time had no problem. And also I usually feel pressure when I inject but none this time.

A friend of mine said that even if I didn't make it to the muscle it will still absorb but maybe slower. So I'm hoping that's the case.

  • I'm just impressed you're giving them to yourself! We had to do an hcg shot for my trigger and DH had to do it bc I couldn't bring myself to do that one!

  • Hi @JuliaGoolia719

I'm actually shocked I can do it. For my first 2 IUIs, over 3 years ago, I went to the clinic to get the trigger shot because I couldn't do it myself.

Then before the IUIs I had over the summer, the clinic did a class and at the end we did a dummy shot. I was shaking. And heard all around me other women say "it's not that bad". So I finally did it. And then was able to do the trigger shots for my IUIs.

By the time i I had to do the IVF I knew I could do the shots but was terrified of the progesterone shot. The day of the retrieval I spent the entire afternoon watching on YouTube women who give the shots to themselves.

and to be honest it wasn't that bad giving it to myself. The second night of the progesterone I forced myself trying with my left hand and again was shocked I was able to do it.

  • I'm super impressed, @Prudence9.

I did all of the IVF shots myself; I felt way more comfortable being in control of the syringes. But I'm supposed to start PIO shots this Friday, and I'm terrified. These were the first shots that my SO was going to do, but maybe I'll try doing them myself.
  • @RedBess I was super impressed by myself (If i may say that. ) and I was also terrified by it. (Until few months ago I was actually afraid of needles!)

But to be honest, it is not as bad as it looks. And in a way I rather give it to myself as I control of it.

I find it the easiest to do while standing. The nurse also told me that sitting down might be easier for turning. But standing works for me.

    Good luck!
