inconsistent poops- (FF)

Some days my LO (little one) poops once, other days up to 5 times and everything in between.  Sometimes it is thicker and more peanut buttery and other times it is looser and more watery.  Anyone else have this?? LO (little one) is formula fed.  I don't know why it's so inconsistent in consistency and frequency but he consistency worries me a bit more.  He was breastfed until 7 weeks exclusively then both breastmilk and formula for a week until all formula at 8 weeks and he's 10 weeks now.  Not sure if he has a little stomach thing going on or if it's just him.
For example on Monday he pooped once early in the morning shortly after eating his first bottle..it was a nice size good consistency poop.  Then yesterday he pooped after every bottle and each one got smaller and more watery.

Re: inconsistent poops- (FF)

  • I can't speak to the FF aspect but I have a LO that has ranged from pooping everyday to going ten full days without a bowel movement. Sometimes those poops are seedy and other time just pure liquid. The pediatrician said all is normal as they are still adjusting to a new digestive system. In your case though, perhaps it is an allergy in the formula being used?

    Consistency
Baby and toddler poop can be as thick as peanut butter or mushier, like cottage cheese or yogurt. Breast-milk poop usually looks like fancy mustard: yellow, seedy, or curdy. Formula poop tends to resemble beat-up flan or pudding. If your child, regardless of her age, passes anything that looks like cat poop (loglike) or rabbit poop (a pebble), she's probably constipated. Rule of, um, thumb: If the poop can roll, it's too hard.

Information above is 'stolen' from https://www.parents.com/baby/diapers/dirty/baby-bowel-movement/
Definitely have a read, she explains it very well about babies poop both for the babies getting BM as well as FF

  • To me it sounds normal for your baby. LO may still be adjusting to the formula. I know mine would go every few days and it would be more formed. It was the formula causing her to be constipated. Then on the right formula she goes at least once a day.

I learned that if they haven't pooped in a while it will generally be thicker or more formed because the water had more time to be absorbed out of the poop. If they are going multiple times a day it may be softer/looser because it has a higher water content.

  • It's totally normal. Since your LO is on formula, have you seen a lot of mucus in the BMs? Mucus can indicate an allergy or he could be swallowing a lot of saliva. Our pediatrician said that was really the only thing to call about, consistency (if still wet) and frequency were normal because as @SandNStarsNJ said, they are still adjusting to their digestive system.

That link was interesting (gosh I never thought i'd say that).  The odor thing got me - I have noticed if my LO doesn't go for about a day then he usually has very stinky poop, like makes you want to gag. Anyone else have that? The link makes it sound like that is possible because it sat in him for a day or more and thus is stinkier although at times he's gone more regularly and sometimes it is still stinky
  • DS bowel movements and farts ALWAYS stink. And it's very distinct - to the point where I can smell it shopping and know we a change ASAP. But, again, he doesn't poop daily so that might be why it stinks.

  • @SandNStarsNJ we just started stinky fart land too. It sort of cracks me up
  • My little girl has really stinky poo and farts, she poops every day, but has cow milk allergi and the formula gives baby stinky poo due to the proteins. I just don't always know if she farted or pooped

  • DS has stinky farts too..and poops..
@tvh1982  how did you find out about the cows milk allergy?
I am hoping his frequent pooping the past two days is just whatever and not an allergy...how would I know..there is no blood in his poop.
Also would I know the difference between diarrhea and regular poop?  His last one was a blow out which I know is normal but how would I know if it's diarrhea??

He is pooping with in 10 min of every bottle and then not between bottles so while he's going a lot it's not non stop...and the weird thing is on Monday he only went once the whole day.
Ughh..why do I worry about everything
  • @rachlee2010 - BM within 10 minutes of eating can be an indication of allergy.

  • @SandNStarsNJ. How long should I wait before calling the dr?? It's been two days of this however after his bottle at 5:30 he didn't poop until 8:30 so that was a longer stretch. He's been on the same formula for 3 plus weeks now. Wouldn't we have seen something sooner if it's an allergy? And would there be other symptoms than just frequent pooping?

I am by no means a medical professional so I would say call your doctor if you're seeing consistent irregularities that feel concerning to you. Worst case: nothing is wrong and you took a trip to the doctor. I'm basing my opinion on having had undiagnosed celiac for a very long time.

Maybe try logging eating and dirty diapers for a few days and see if there's any kind of pattern as far as timing and consistency. If there is, call the doctor. If not, perhaps LO is just working more mature bowels.

  • I found out about her allergy when I visited a homeopath @rachlee2010.
I visited him after my niece advised me.
My little girl was in serious pain. First we started off with reflux. I got told to change formula for babies with reflux. The reflux stopped, but her poops where like hardened yellow playdough. I been on the phone several times with the paediatrician, but I sometimes felt they categorised me as a 'worried first time mum, and babies do cry'
My little girl wanted to eat 14-16 times a day, yet she was in pain after every meal. She cried with every fart or poopy diaper. Guests holding her would say 'oh she's really working on filling that diaper right now' if they were holding her. And I would say '100% sure that diaper will be empty' as my little girl worked and worked to get it out, yet nothing came!
The homeopath check her, and said he was 99% sure it was cowsmilk allergy.
I went back to the paediatrician and demanded they did something.
I got formula for cowsmilk and she was a different baby.
We got ill, and afterwards she got her shots, but two weeks later I felt still something wasn't right. So I went back. They gave me knew formula, but this was to prevent cows milk allergy and after bottle 4 I had a baby that was in discomfort. So I called again and said this was not an option. Now I have a different brand for cowsmilk allergy and 'fingers crossed' we are on the right track.

That your LO poops after every meal is not shocking. Some babies do. It's like a personal frequency. Adults have this too.
As long as his not in discomfort when having to poo, no worries are needed.
FF doesn't get digested completely so often is good, otherwise it get 'stuck' in there and you don't want that.
Runny diapers or diahrea is maybe harder to detect, yet again if he's not in discomfort, he drinks well and has frequent wet diapers, all should be ok.

But that's just what I've learned during the 13 weeks of my daughters life, I'm not trained to know what's wrong or right!
So if you are worried, go to the paediatrician and explain your worry.
They can have a look, listen to you and help you either to stop worrying or 'fix' what is wrong should there be anything wrong.
Write down when he poops, they often like to see pictures of the diaper too.

    ***sorry for the book report!***

  • Mine went from one big, stinky poop a day or every day and a half to going back to a small poop every diaper change. I swear this kid is trying to keep me on my toes.
  • While EBF, it looks like we're about to do our second suppository in a row. LO can fart but he's not having bowel movements and is getting increasingly more fussy about it.
