Switching from Infant Seat to Convertible Seat?

Has anyone thought about switching from the infant seat to a convertible seat? I know still rear-facing (as long as possible) but I read somewhere that some people recommend having baby in a convertible seat by age 1. We are a little over half way there and Babies R Us is in the middle of a trade in event. Wondering if I should pull the trigger and go ahead and buy a convertible seat now (trading in my niece's expired infant seat). Anyone else thinking about this yet?

Re: Switching from Infant Seat to Convertible Seat?

  • LO has been in a rear facing convertible for about a month. We have one that is suitable from birth, and he was looking a bit cramped in the capsule. We've moved the capsule into our other car because he still fits in it, but he's mainly in the convertible. He's much more comfortable, but he's a bit more upright then in the capsule so his head sometimes falls forward when he's asleep. He very rarely falls asleep in the car, so it's not that big of a deal.

  • I also read that new tests by the APA say you should switch them by one. It is apparently safer? We are planning to buy one for her first birthday! Unless I can find a really good deal. I have friends who have moved their babies earlier and it is perfectly fine.
  • We just moved DS into a convertible seat @ 6 months. We got a wicked deal on a Graco 4ever. Keep your eye on amazon sales. Depending on the brand they have good deals periodically. I found ours at target.
  • I asked my pediatrician and she said to keep DS is the infant carrier until he's almost to the weight/height limit
  • We bought a graco 4ever and got an awesome deal on it too. We haven't installed it yet because right now the convenience of having the bucket seat wins out. W is tall (long?) so I'm pretty sure he'll outgrow the bucket soon-ish. I think we'll swap it in the spring when the snow is gone and we won't need to deal with snowsuits going to and from the car. I'm giving our bucket seat to my brother and SIL and they're due in July so that's our cutoff anyway.
  • I've been thinking about this. Our nanny has a convertible car seat and sometimes she'll take DS out in the car and he loves it way more than the bucket seat because he can look around and see everything. He has a blast in it, actually. Whereas in the bucket seat he just falls asleep every time since it's reclined so much more.

@FTM53 - Did your pediatrician give a reason? I'm curious if the infant carrier is safer or if it's just that it's not 100% necessary to move the up til they hit the limits?
  • My LO went in a convertible at 4 months because she hated the infant seat so badly.  She is so much happier.  In the infant seat i dreaded taking her anywhere in the car because she would scream...the convertible seat fixed that.  She has always hated laying flat so I think that is largely the reason...she is so close to maxing out on the limits of an infant seat anyway we would've needed the convertible seat sooner rather than later.

This is us to a T. At the earliest, M will get moved after the weather has broken.  It's been a mild winter by Ohio standards but the convenience of the infant seat wins out right now. We want a recaro so I'm keeping my eyes out for a sale.
  • We switched at 6 months, still keeping it rear facing. She loves that she can look out the window! We have it installed in my car, and when DH takes her places when I'm at work, she goes in the infant seat in his car. We got an amazing deal on one on black Friday.
  • Moms who have graco4ever.   That's what we bought too!  Is it easy to install/uninstall?  Just asking cuz my husband picks up from the sitter one day a week and I drop off.
  • I feel like I watch videos on youtube of these women installing the seats by themselves and it looks so easy, then I go to do it and it takes me forever and I end up needing help to get it tight enough.  The videos never show the wiggle test...or I'm just paranoid about it being tight enough?  I also always struggle getting them level.  I've installed the Britax Marathon (love it) and babytrend (I like it, she was comfy in it, but the strap quality was lacking and the installation was tough)
  • This is a great price on this car seat in case anyone needs one! We just ordered one for $79. It is on Amazon so the price can change anytime.

My husband said it was. If you have a newer vehicle it has a latch system built in which makes the install even easier.
