NT scan today

Hi everyone,

i'm kind of at a loss for words right now. the baby's neck measured thick, 3.5, so right away the dr had me go talk to the genetic counselor and get the blood test. i was a sobbing mess while she was talking. i barely remember what she talked about. i  don't remember the last time i cried that hard, my eyes hurt. i have to wait 7 to 10 days for the results, this is going to be a long week.

I don't have a question, i'm not ranting, i just needed to put it out there. we don't want to tell anyone until we know for sure.

Ok, first, I totally understand. My first pregnancy we had a large nuchal fold, and they actually didn't even say anything until the following week when they got my blood work to confirm everything. BUT, I'm not totally for sure, but I don't think 3.5 is all that terrible. I think anything over 5 is cause for concern. But below that, it may just be something that goes away, or I really don't know, but I don't think its bad at all. Having the blood work will set your mind at ease and confirm anything, and I know waiting is hard. But, you can do it momma! And like I said, I don't think 3.5 is horrible, so try to stay in the positive until you know for sure.

Thank you. This is my 3rd, didn't get the nt scan with my first, everything was normal with my second.  I asked about the numbers, she said they're on the conservative side, they start at 3 and over is a concern.  She did say some start at 3.5. But then I googled it and obe site said anything over 2.5 is concerning.  Obviously I will not use Google anymore because it will make me crazy.
I'm feeling guilty, like it's my fault,  we had tried for 5 years to have a baby,  did ivf with our first, the second and third ate spontaneous.
I don't know what I'm trying to say, but you're right,  the blood test could come back fine.
    Thank you, the reminder helps.

I'm right there with you. After first not seeing a nasal bone so trying again a week later, now we have a beautiful nasal bone and a thick measurement of 3.1. It's been hell with this whole process and I'm just emotionally and mentally spent. They've now thrown me into the high risk category, will have me do the harmony test and see high risk specialist. I'm getting a lot of
positive feedback about false positives and the chances of baby being perfectly fine. Also hearing many positive stories. Prayers to you momma and wishing the best for both of us.

also adding that I know a lot is protocol. The dr said she just didn't feel comfortable not having furthing testing with me being over 3. They like it under 2.5, but I've read 3 and 3.5 can also be limits for normal depending who you ask..

The nasal came back fine, dr actually said great. I felt a great sense of relief then he said the neck was thick. I went from feeling relief to crying in about 30 seconds.
Did you do blood work?  They wanted me to decide on amnio or CVS today but I want to wait for the blood test results first.
Definitely wishing the best for us and our babies.

I'm so sorry ladies. I haven't done my NT scan so I don't have any advice or experience. But I did hear the same feedback that there are lots of false positives. I think you are right to do the non invasive cell free DNA testing first @abchrist1. Maybe it will show no need for the amino. Thinking about you fellow sept2015 mama  <3 keep us updated

@abchrist1 @destdave2013 I just wanted to chime in and say that I'm sorry for the added anxiety you are feeling. I had a little opposite situation last pregnancy where my scan was fine but my first tri bloodwork gave me a 1:45 chance for Down Syndrome at 29 y/o. I elected to have the CVS at 13 weeks because it was faster and it looked at more than just the markers looked at on the NIPT bloodwork tests AND I knew my insurance covered the CVS. It was not a long procedure (15 mins!) and stung for a second, but baby was monitored every step of the way via ultrasound which was reassuring. Everything came back low risk which I was thankful for and I knew the results in less than a week. Whatever you choose to do, just know that there's no wrong choice. GL <3

We're doing the NT at 12 weeks. Does that leave time for CVS or amnio if results are inconclusive?

I was told amnio at 16 weeks, there's not enough fluid before that. And cvs by 13 weeks, maybe 13 weeks and 4 days, I'm hoping that's true and hoping I can get in by this Tuesday. Good luck to you!

@oriole2017 I had my NT at 12+2 and had the CVS a week later at 13+3. I was told they don't want to do it later than the end of your 13th week and at that point to wait for the amnio. They said the sooner the better for CVS and wanted me to schedule it the next day when they broke the news to me, but I needed a day to process everything before making a decision. It also depends on what dr does the procedure bc I know the one that I went to was only available certain days.

@abchrist1 just checking to see how you are and if you've heard any results yet! I've been waiting for my insurance to approve the harmony test  - but I see maternal fetal medicine tomorrow and am Insisting they do the blood draw and I'll battle insurance later. The ball needs to get rolling, waiting is the worst.

@destdave2013  Had the cvs on tuesday, did fish and microaray  (spelling?) Got the fish results today, came back normal.  Get the other results next week, they take longer. And found out its a boy. She reminded me that they're still looking for why there's extra fluud, but I was a little relieved today.
My blood work and cvs will all be out of pocket.  I have terrible insurance. Although we can argue that my dr recommended this. The waiting is awful,  it's why I chose cvs over amnio.  I'd have to wait 2 more weeks for a safe amnio plus another 2 weeks for results.  I already have 2 wonderful kids  (3 &1) they keep me very busy, but I feel so distracted and that I'm not being a good mom to anyone,  I needed to know asap what's going on with baby.
Good luck to you, keep me posted

@abchrist1 that is really good initial news!! How was the cvs for you? I saw MFM yesterday who also said they draw their line at 3, my ob was 2.5. They measured baby again at 3 but it's insignificant now since it's outside of the nt time frame. It'll be a week or so for the harmony test results but for now they don't see any other red flags. I'm just praying for a phone call with good news next week, then the next steps to make sure heart and all look ok. I almost wish I didn't do the nt scan, didn't with my first and was recommended to do it this time and thought what the heck. I had read before that there are so many false positives that I wouldn't freak if my measurement was a little high. I just wanted an extra ultrasound to see babe. Well Here I am freaking! Go figure. Please keep us posted and I'm praying we are in that false positive group! oh and yes, our kids are the best distraction AND the best medicine. If I could just get over this paralyzed feeling..

This is all pretty positive stuff ladies! hoping for the all clear for everyone!

@abchrist1 good news about the FISH result part! Hopefully bc this was a dr recommended procedure you won't have to pay fully out of pocket...I know how expensive mine was. GL!

@destdave2013, yes this is such a paralyzing feeling   all this waiting.  And I have heard from many about the false positives, still can't help but worry.
Was it recommended because of age? It was for me with my last pregnancy,  2 years ago, now I'm being told they recommend everyone do it.
The cvs was ok.  The whole time the needle was in my uterus was contracting,  so cramping, hurt a little more when he was doing the extraction because of the pumping. Dh was freaked out by the needle size. But I'm so use to scary, painful procedures.  With ivf I had a ton of needles, blood draws, tests and procedures,  multiple times. He was there, he should be use to it too, guess it's different when you're watching it happen.
So we're both still waiting for results,  mine will be next week too. Fingers crossed,  I'll be thinking of you. Keep me posted, I will too but probably won't hear til Thursday or Friday.

@abchrist1 yes I believe recommended because of age and when I was pregnant with DS 2+ years ago my dr wasn't doing the NT scan then and "brought it back"? I'm wishing they didnt! I'm 30 btw.  You sound like a trooper with all the IVF and CVS procedure. Good for you. I'm also glad it seemed to have no repercussions for you besides some minor cramping. I'm already thinking about how if hopefully I get a low risk from the harmony, I will be worrying about all it DIDNT test for including heart defect. If it's high risk I'll proceed with amnio and go from there. That's my plan in my head anyway and it helps me cope to have a plan for all scenarios. I'll be thinking of you too and praying for good news for us both next week momma. Now I just gotta stay off google..

I have my NT scan today, actually I'm sitting in the waiting room, again. I went in earlier and the baby wasn't cooperating so the sonographer told to pee and maybe the baby would move to get a better angle. Nope that didn't help so she told me to wait in the waiting room and she will see two other patients and make me come back to try again.

This worries me all the time because with my DS he did the same thing and my original clinic couldn't get a reading. Well DS is 2 and of course came out fine & healthy. But this always gives me anxiety, playing the waiting game in the waiting room to try again. I hope everything goes well. Not how I wanted my Friday to start....crossing fingers when I go back in again we can get it done and everything is looking good.

@abchrist1 been thinking of you the past couple days and anxiously awaiting your update! Hoping you get the rest of your news soon.
@dma0389 I hope all went well for you and I know it's easier said than done but please try not to worry until given something to worry about. ANd even then, positivity and staying hopeful go a long way! Many of us on this discussion know all to well about the waiting game and the nerves and anxiety involved.  Best wishes.

@abchrist1 YAYYY!!! I am so glad for you! I know it's hard not to worry but it sounds like they are really being overly cautious and making your worry drag on. I hope you can try to enjoy your pregnancy and have faith in all the good rest results. Best of luck to you momma!

@abchrist1 Awesome news! When I had my NT scan they didn't even give me the measurement.  So after seeing all of this I asked and she said oh, the most I could get was .9.  And I was like, so that's good right?  And she said up to 4 usually is what we think is acceptable.  So I think your initial 3.5 would probably not been a concern to my practice.  It is interesting how every doctor seems to do things so differently. I'm glad you got good results and can breathe a little.  Here's to an amazing AS at 20 weeks! <3
