Cloth Diapers

Does anyone else on this BMB cloth diaper? I cloth diapered my DD from the time we got home from the hospital until she potty trained. As a newborn I loved Grovia & workhorse prefolds. Once she got into one size, my favorites are Bumgenious. I have lots of limited edition diapers which is why I never sold any. Good thing so I can use them for this surprise #2.
What is your favorite cloth diaper?
If you want to know more about cloth diapering feel free to ask.

Re: Cloth Diapers

  • We use bumgenius aio freetimes and absolutely love how convenient they are! We also have a few flats, hemp, and a cover for naps now that DS is older and a heavy wetter.
  • Loading the player...
  • I clothed my first two and LOVED workhorse fitteds. My favorite AIO was Blueberry Simplex. It was a heartbreaking day when I put my stash up for sale.... I still miss my Albert original elemental.

Daycare where we moved is definitely against cloth diapering so we aren't with baby 3, and I'm so sad about it.

  • I cloth diapered DS until he was potty trained. I did organic prefolds with Thirsties, Grovia, or BG covers until he got into the OS. Through the end, I loved Flips, BG AIOs, and Grovia AIOs.

This time I'm going to start with woolies and maybe stick with it through potty training. We'll see.
  • @Sprite2012 I could never get the hang of wool. I need some newborn & small workhorse & prefolds with covers. This is the one thing I'm excited about, breaking out the stash again. It also gives me a reason to buy limited edition prints again.

  • With my first I CD from birth and started with prefolds and covers and then went to BumGenius BG pockets and then freetimes. With second baby I had mostly BG newborns and have used BG pockets but mostly freetimes. I love custom organic fitteds you can find in specialty shops and on the swap pages, but you can't beat the affordability and ease of use with brands like BumGenius. I recently had a hard battle with ammonia in my stash and was using disposables for a while. Once they run out I'm going back to cloth and gonna procure some more newborns for baby number 3!

  • This is my first so I have no previous experience, but I am very much hoping to! Leaning towards bumGenius and Flips.  Probably won't get newborn sizes though. DH and I were both big babies so I'm guessing at this point that the one sizes will fit pretty quickly! If I'm wrong that is what online ordering is for
  • I tried with DS and didn't have much luck. We attempted pre-folds and covers, but I never felt I got any of the folds down and trying to manage getting a cover and the pre-fold on a squirmy baby... it wasn't for me. If we try again this time I'm definitely going to just do AIO's like the bum genius organic.

@MrsJessS the one size diapers will fit from about 8-10lbs but they tend to be super bulky. I don't have a full newborn stash so I just supplement with disposables until the one size fit, or I tend to use the bulky ones at night or when we are at home and the newborns when we go out so the clothes fit better. Good luck with CD!

  • For first time mamas (and first time using cloth diapers), what would people recommend? Also, is it common for daycares to not accept cloth diapers? I'd think it would still be worth it to do at home for a year before the child goes to daycare and on evenings/weekends.

  • @kristanoah thanks! That's seems like a good approach! As we get closer to knowing how big this baby is going to be I might get a few in newborn size to mix in w disposable as a low pressure kick start hahaha
  • I used cloth on my first daughter until she potty trained. I used cloth on my 2nd daughter until she was 1 and have been using disposables since then (she just turned 2) Honestly I just got burnt out after 3.5 years of cloth between the two.

I think we will use cloth again with this new baby. I like bumgenius pockets mainly and I also like grovia aio because I have petite girls and I like how trim they are.

  • @starla I have always used cloth diapers with my first. The first daycare we went to did allow cloth. The one we are at now doesn't - they could, they just don't want to have to create a different system for cloth since I'm pretty much the only crunchy momma in the place. So now we do cloth when kiddo is home (5 days a week) and disposable for daycare (which only comes out to 6-8 disposables a week). Personally I think it's worth it even if just for evenings/weekends, but some people might feel like it's too much work for such a limited number diapers.

Our home daycare with our first did them and our first daycare with both allowed them. It's our newest that is saying it's against minimum standards for hazardous materials/human waste. *side eyes* If I still had my stash I'd fight for it a little bit more. But I'm definitely in the minority around here for crunchier practices.

  • Prepare for a book....

I have lo in CD now and have since her cord stump fell off (7 months). She is small so we use the prefolds with pins and coveralls. I love the prefolds we get from greenmountaindiapers.com because they have a thinner "half sizes." I have always felt we get a good fit with them. I used to use snappies (so much easier!) But switched to pins once she started scooting because the snappie was making the diaper rub and give her a rash. I like the blueberry coveralls. They are waterproof and keep the blowouts contained. We have lost very few outfits using these. There is a newborn size too, which I was super glad we had. She wore them until she was 3 months.

    Stash breakdown:
    2 doz newborn
    2 newborn covers

    3 doz novice
    3 doz intermediate
    6 coveralls 10-40#
    3 doz wipes

We also do cloth wipes & spray for pee. I made some from extra flannel receiving blankets and I have some Birdseye ones. I like them both. Poop and night time get disposable wipes. I have used bother honest company spray and bum genius spray (diluted and full strength) and like them both.

We use a dry pail for pee diapers and a wet pail for poo diapers. I opted to preset my washer to a non quick was and many extra rinse cycle. We use arm & hammer free and clear and have ever had a problem with buildup.  Stains will fade with sun exposure. I wash diapers every other day.

I use cloth when we are out and about so we have 3 mini wet bags and 2 larger wet bags. I really like the ones from Damero and they were inexpensive. I always take one small (to isolate poop) and one large bag (holds about 8 diapers) with us.

We have a charlie banana (?) Sprayer for the toilet. Best thing ever. Makes cleaning poo diapers not nearly as daunting.

She is still early into the weight range on the intermediate diapers so I hope that is the last set I have to buy....

I think that sums up our CD experience lol.
  • @Carebella Prefolds can be tricky. I believe it's an art form, LOL. Once you get the hang of it I love Prefolds. I use Thiresties covers

@Starla As I first time mom and/or CDing I would suggest AIO or pocket diapers they seem to be to as close to a "sposie" as you can get. Once you get the hang of those I would say try out a Prefold.

@khenry12 I love Green Mountain Diapers. Those are the only Prefold & workhorse type that I use.

My mom & my inlaws keep my DD so I taught them how to use my diapers but I also built a "grandparent" stash so if by chance they ruined a diaper it was not one of my favs. Once my DD started preschool they were good with cloth diapers so I have been lucky. I'm glad to connect with other CD moms. When I was PG last time with my DD the CD board was great and I also found great Facebook groups. These last few weeks it seems as though the CD has not been as busy. I was afraid CD was not as popular as it was 4 years ago. I love for people to ask me about my CD in public.

  • I have always wanted to CD and since this is my last child ( DS is 7 DD is 6) I am determined to do it this time! Just one problem.  I have no clue where to start! LoL. Did you ladies get various sizes so when your LO arrived you were set? Is one type easier for those who have no experience?
  • @bassoondiva; all in ones are the easiest since they're just like disposables. They're typically one size and adjust as your child grows. Ours start at 8lbs and go to 35lbs.
  • I want to CD, but this is my first, so I don't have any BTDT experience.

I've done looooots of research and I think we'll start with a basic stash as a mix of pockets and prefolds to see what I prefer personally and to have flexibility, and then build a more substantial stash once we decide what we like the best.

I'm not 100% sure if I want to start right away or do disposable at first so I don't have to deal with the meconium and getting used to a NB AND CDs at the same time...maybe phase it in? Same with overnight...I might start with just daytime and see how it goes.

  • @bassoondiva I would start start with pockets and AIO of different brands that way as you know what works your your little one you can get more of that brand and sale what don't work. Once you get the hang of CD you can add in Prefold and fitteds with covers
I only use Prefolds, fitteds, & workhorses with covers while we are at home. If we were going out we put on a pocket or AIO for easy on the go changes
@BigBadWolf12 With my first I started CD from the moment we got home the hospital. To me since everything was new and I was going to have to get a routine going I might as well throw CD in the mix. If I would have started one routine then try to add CD into that - to me that would have made it harder. Everyone is different. The meconium poop was not as bad as the "peanut butter" poop. I also had disposable liners in my CD during the meconium phase. Your overnight routine will definitely be different then your daytime routine and you may have to adjust your nighttime more than your daytime

  • @futurebabylmom yea, I have thought of that too. Going from nb would also require a whole other stash which is the main thing holding me back but I forgot to say it in my rambling. I also live overseas where things are more expensive so I was planning on getting a bunch of cds in the summer when we are visiting Canada, but two stashes at once is a lot of luggage :P

  • @FutureBabyLMom @Becky012016 thanks so much for the info!!!! Now my next question is do you all lean towards buying brand new or do you buy used? Just trying to get a feel of what's normal.  I do shop the by annual consignment sales so I'm not opposed to buying used items but I didn't know how that worked as far as diapers.
  • @bassoondiva I buy both new & used. If you buy used I normally do two wash cycles before I but it on the bum. Also with used you have to watch out / look at the elastic and PUL. I have been luck with my used finds with no issues. If the PUL is bad I just turn them into swim diapers

  • I have purchased new and used diapers for both of my kids. I've occasionally had to change put the elastic in used diapers(my own too) but it's quick and still cheaper in the long run.

There are some great Facebook groups that's have all the info you could need. Cloth diapering 101 and BUMGENIUS BST are two that I reccomend. I am fortunate enough to live close to a natural parenting store called the Nappy Shoppe which has classes and tons of resources available for CDing. They have a Facebook page and webpage that also have tons of info!

  • @bassoondiva   We bought all new for DS knowing we wanted 2-3 kids to use the stash eventually.
  • Thanks so much everyone  and thanks @FutureBabyLMom for starting this thread. You mommas Rock.  I went to a sale today and bought a few used diapers I will post them on here when I figure out had to work the attach photo feature.  LoL
  • @bassoondiva Your Welcome. I love helping other mammas with cloth
