caffeine content question

Does anyone know how much caffeine is in a 8-10oz standard KCUP? I know it varies with roast and brand, but just looking online for this there are SO many random websites talking about it that I don't know what is the standard amount or which ones are reliable. Did any of your OBGYNs mention how much? I know 200 mg of caffeine is ok .. and I drink a cup of coffee (10 oz kcup) every morning but man it sure would be nice to have that second cup ...

Re: caffeine content question

  • I think standard is around 90mg. I think that's why they say 2 cups daily is fine while pregnant. I think 1 cup of Starbucks is different.

Plus, I drink a cup in the morning, but basically half the actual amount. Unless you drink to the last drop, it's not as much as you think.

have you ever tried decaf for the second cup? I bought Dunkin Donuts (Michigan brand) decaf and was making one kcup in the afternoon and it worked really well.

decaf is a good idea! I had not thought of that!
  • I think moderation is key unless your OB or CNM tells you otherwise...

I drink 1 or 2 coffee drinks per day, sometimes decaf, sometimes half-caf, sometimes regular... I'm sure I'm getting more caffeine than I'd like on some days but on average I'm fine.  I have no added medical reason to reduce my caffeine so I'm not stressing on the number of mg of caffeine/drink or day.
  • I also have 1-2 caffeine drinks a day. Not really stressing at all. My husband would make me coffee and sneak in the decaf,  but I could totally tell the difference. Blech!!!!

  • I don't drink coffee but I have at least 2 pops every day. I don't worry too much about it. As long as I'm also drinking a lot of water!

  • I have 2 kcups a day and don't really stress it
My BP has been good and baby's heart rate is good, too

  • @alm52386 soda has a lot less caffeine than coffee.  That's my one vice, and I know it's not good for you, but there are far worse things I could be drinking.  As I sit here and drink Coke #2 of the day.....there are only 34mg of caffeine in a 12oz can, so even 2 is well below the 200mg of caffeine recommended.  I get wired off a can of Coke, so I can't imagine how I would be if I drank a coffee daily.

Occasionally I'll have a cup of tea, but that's so infrequent I don't even pay attention to it.

  • Kudos to all of you that can even drink 2 cups of coffee in a day. I have a sip and Im all like....

Also posting to say that when I breastfed DS after drinking coffee he would throw up like crazy. Might have just been the lack of caffeine in utero but it took a while for me to make the connection. Just a heads up if you are nursing your kiddo in the future and they tend to get sick in the early morning.

  • The caffeineinformer website says this about kcups:

It is difficult to determine caffeine amounts per blend in Keurig K Cups. However Keurig claim that “specialty beverages containing tea, coffee, or chocolate may have up to 60mg per 8oz serving”.

I wish information on how much caffeine is in different brands of coffee of such was more readily available. I've even contacted a couple of companies to ask, on average, how much caffeine is in <insert blend here> of their coffee. I've never heard back from any of them. I generally limit myself to 1 8oz cup of coffee in the morning and then 1 cup of decaf at night. I'm assuming that I'm probably under 200mg a day with that though I totally hear you on having mornings where that second cup of coffee would be AMAZING.

I usually stick to a cup a day but will have the occasional second cup.

@alm52386 I love that you call it pop! I do too even having lived in a soda area.
  • @NarrowHouses haha I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice I've been saying pop! I grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago. We are in Madison now and most people say soda. I will never stop saying pop!!!!
