Appointments 1.23-1.27

I feel like I just posted this for last week.  HOW has another week gone by?!

  • I see a couple people mentioning 28 week scans...is this common? My office does the anatomy scan at 20 weeks and I don't believe another one until something like 36 weeks. Just curious as a FTM.

  • @kitkat8387 I want to know too! I plan to ask at my appointment tomorrow. I feel smallish and I want to make sure she's still growing properly, but they may not do a scan from here on out. Don't know.
  • @Dannylion24 it is crazy! From everything I've heard that's all that's normal at my practice. No growth scans or anything. Just dating and anatomy. But all the women my mother's age or older keep reminding me they got one and that was it! So I feel grateful to have had four which were medically necessary so far and one I paid for to find out gender. But I wouldn't mind seeing her one more time before the end!
  • I personally would probably decline any more scan for a "just because" reason. They are horribly inaccurate at guessing size of baby in the 3rd trimester. So, if they wanted one just for size I would definitely take it with a grain of salt. They can easily be off by 2 pounds towards the end. So, many women get scared about a "big baby" for no reason and end up with a perfectly average baby. After my baby measured totally fine at 23 weeks I am good to wait.

  • I always wondered what the late scan was for too? Because like @mrsstuessy said, late scans can be inaccurate on weight/growth. The only other reason I can think of is to make sure that the baby is head down, but I thought the OBs could feel that...haha! Am I crazy?!

  • @mrsstuessy wow! That's a lot! I had no idea. Never mind then, I'm good!  :D
  • One of my girlfriends had a scan at 36 weeks and thought she was having a 9+ pound baby based on the measurements - when he arrived (at a little past 41 weeks!) he was only 7 lbs 12 oz.

I don't know if I'm getting another scan or not yet.  OB said that I could, but probably not necessary unless something comes up, and it *sounds* like insurance will cover one to check positioning.  However, I think I'm also okay with waiting (I had mine at 8 and 20 weeks) and I also don't want to be stuck with the bill if the u/s isn't coded correctly or something.

  • This is a pretty easy read and informative. https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/01/11/high-birth-weight-predictions-are-often-inaccurate/
At a recent class I taught at a pregnancy center one of the ladies, who was 36 weeks pregnant, told me that she has just scheduled a c-section because her baby was measuring large on the 36 week ultrasound. It made me sad because she was really bummed out about it. 4 out of 5 people who are told they are having a large baby don't actually have a large baby. So, I really caution people to think very hard about getting ultrasounds close to your due date, without a real health concern.

  • I also had a friend that was told she was going to have a 9 lb baby and her daughter wasn't even 6 lbs!

  • I had a scan towards the end with ds just to check position. They are so big at that point that you can't even really tell what body part is on the screen.
  • I am having a 32 w ultrasound because my placenta implanted low in my uterus. I appreciate all of this information regarding birth weight because I am sure they will try and measure the baby while they are at it.

I had an appointment today and it seems like everything is doing okay.

  • @Dannylion24 For someone to not be on Team Green and still not know the sex must be incredibly frustrating! Do you have any ultrasound places (private companies) you can go to in your area, pay $40-50 and they can determine the sex? I know there are several places near me that do that.

  • @KirstinH88 I need to check around since we just moved here, but I did have a private place near us in my old town. I def may have to just go bc I'm feeling nuts!

I would love to get another look at this babe, but our hospital only does the confirmation and anatomy scans as well. The pictures we got at the anatomy scan were not very good, could barely make out the baby. I've seen everyone's cute u/s pictures and just wish I had one. Maybe that's why I'm wanting another scan... anyways, I'm ok with not having another one. Thankful this baby has been healthy throughout the pregnancy.

My next check up appointment is in the morning. I asked the dr last time when I will be coming in every 2 weeks and she said at 36 weeks. I feel like this doesn't seem right? Maybe I misunderstood. When do you all start going every two weeks? I know every hospital is different.
  • @carpediem55 I always assumed you started going every two weeks around the beginning of the 3rd trimester and every week appts started around 36 weeks.. I haven't discussed this with my OB yet, but this is what I remember from when I was pregnant with DS.

  • @carpediem55 my doctor also starts every two week visits very late compared to everyone else, and I never start weekly visits. I think I go 32, 36, 38, 40 at this point. I thought it was strange that I didn't get as many appointments at the end as everyone else seems to.
  • Today I have my routine apt, GTT and Rhogam shot. Lots going on today!

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • For my prior pregnancies, visits every week begin at 32 wks, then weekly at 36 wks. So just 2 appts in month 8 and 4 (or more if I'm late) in month 9.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • My OB does monthly appointments until 30-32 weeks, then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly. I decline all of the internal exams until the last one before my due date (aside from the group b strep test).

I'm the only person I know whose growth scan was accurate, haha. They measured DS at 9 pounds, and when he was born a few days later he was 9lbs 6oz. I only needed a scan to check his position, but my OB doesn't have an US in office, so she has to send me to the lab for them and they always just check everything. Otherwise, I would have only gotten the dating/confirmation US and my AS.

  • I had an appt this week at 28. I now go at 30, 32, 34, 36 then weekly 37, 38, 39, 40
    That's a lot of appts!
Same here, except at Christmas I got a week behind so technically I'm visiting at 31, 33, 35 then we'll see if they want to switch to every week after that or after week 37.
