Road trip with baby

We will be taking our first road trip with our 4 month old at the end of the weeek and I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice. The trip can range from 3.5-5 hours depending on traffic. We know to stop when necessary to feed/change but I was just wondering if anyone has any advice. I'm a little nervous for our baby to be in the car for so long. Thanks!

Re: Road trip with baby

  • Definitely plan to stop a lot, and make sure your husband is aware.  Like prep him for stopping a LOT.  My husband would get so annoyed on road trips, having to stop so much.
And maybe one of you sit in the back with the babe if you can!

  • Baby and I are taking a road trip tomorrow too! It's been a while since our last one in October. She's flown twice and taken 3 big road trips. I'm hoping this one is easier. She eats every 3-4 hours now so just based on that it HAS to be better, right?

I agree w @hejo2016 plan for it to take a long time. Have snacks and water for yourself and other passengers so nobody is crabby. For longer trips when you can be the passenger I recommend a manual breast pump
  • We frequently take a 3.5 hour road trip to see the in-laws. When she was younger we stopped 1/2 way to feed and change her. Last two times we went we fed her right before leaving and she slept for the whole drive. She is 4 1/2 months right now.
  • I just did a 3 hour road trip with my son this past weekend to visit my in laws. It's really not too big of a deal. On the way down there he slept the whole way. Coming home took about 4/4.5 hours because of very bad weather. He woke up once while we we were at a gas station. I gave him a bite to eat and then put him back in his car seat where he fell back asleep for the rest of the drive (after some protest cries).

My only tip is give your LO some toys to entertain/tire them out. My son has some crinkly fabric books we put in his car seat that he loves and he'll usually conk out while playing with them.
  • Thanks everyone!
  • My step-mother is planning our yearly family vacation and we always camp out. Obviously it won't be until this summer but we road tripped to Arizona one year when my youngest girl was only 2 and let me just say I won't be doing that again! haha! A small road trip would be ok for Luke but there will be NO camping out until he is older. "I ain't fittin to deal with that." ;-)
  • We were going to go to Mississippi in May for memorial day weekend, so Xavier would've been almost 9 months old, to see my sister. Let me tell you, I was dreading it because Xavier hates his carseat unless he is in motion. So when I found out she was coming up here instead, I was so relieved.
  • Luke HATES his car seat to unless its in motion. I'm glad its not warm enough to put the windows down because stop lights would be a nightmare! LOL

  • Its pretty funny, if little girl is crying I her carseat all we have to do is pick it up and she immediately stops. Pretty helpful when my husband is around cause he can just carry her around in it longer than I can.

My husband is planning to go up to his family camp this summer... this means hubby, me, baby, and dog in a tent. Guess how excited I am about this.....

  • Omg a tent sounds horrid...
  • Road trip to moms (8 hour drive) went ok. I had a bag of baby toys up front I could reach back to her when fussy to get another half hour down the road.

We just did one to D.C. (3 1/2 h drive) and she slept the whole way. I can't believe it! Of course it's almost 2am and I'm wide awake from all the caffeine to keep me awake!
