IUD?

I can't use hormonal bc, anyone have a non-hormonal IUD?

Can you have it for just a few months? I don't want to keep it in past the summer.

For Kaiser patients, was it covered?

Re: IUD?

  • I have a friend who had the copper one for years, she liked it.  I believe she got it at kaiser and had no problem getting it covered.

  • I should add, ( and I don't know if there is any relation) but she had it out 2 years ago and has been TTC since then with no success. She now has unexplained IF.  They had no problem concieving their first.

I have no idea if one has anything to do with the other, but I just thought I'd throw that out there.

  • I'm planning on getting Paraguard...I just need to get off my arse and order it.  I don't have Kaiser, but my ins won't cover the IUD itself - so that's going to run me $500 or so.  At that price, I wouldn't use it for just a few months, but from what I understand you can just remove it whenever you're ready.
  • I have Mirena, but you are talking about Paragaurd.

I have kaiser and Mirena was 100% covered under my insurance (But I also have no co-pays and $5 for any prescription).

I know that my dr would never have given me Mirena if I was just interested in a couple months, she basically said nothing short of a year is what she does...and Mirena is only a 5 year one, Paragaurd is 10 years.  So I doubt they will give it to you for such a short amount of time.

I also am not 100% sure Kaiser offers Paragaurd....

  • My OB told me that I could have the IUD for as short of a time period as I wanted.  He told me that if I didn't like it I could have it out at my 1 month check-up after having it implanted.  I told him I'd only have it for about 8-10 months and he said that was totally fine.

I saw Dr. Sacher at the Santa Rosa Kaiser.

  • I had the paragard (non-hormone) for 10 years and loved it!  I got the Mirena (the hormone only enters the uterine lining, not the bloodstream) after Owen was born and loved it.  It was covered by Kaiser.   You can have it in for as long/short as you want, but I would use something else if I were considering it for less than year b/c it can take a few months for the spotting/cramping to subside and with the paragard I had heavy periods.

But over all I love and prefer the IUDs to all other forms of BC.

  • But he's soooo dreamy!

I've got Mirena, but discussed both at length with Dr. Skolnick in Petaluma at the time.  Ruled out Paraguard based on family history with copper IUD's.  Technology has changed a lot, but to be on the safe side decided against the copper based on my cycle characteristics and that history.  Was told at the time that both could be placed & removed with ease at any time.  Was also told that either could be removed for TTC with no reason to wait for a "cycle" - "just go for it" was the wording.  :)

Both were covered for me, never paid a dime.

Based on my experience though, if it's only going to be a couple of months, I'd just as soon go with another form of BC.  Have DH double up on the rain coats 'er somethin'.  :)

  • There is the copper IUD. I have Mirena, which is low hormone, but hormone none-the-less.

It was covered by my insurance, but without coverage it would have been about $800.

Duration wise, my OB wouldn't recommend getting one unless you plan to keep it in for at least 1-2 years. Each OB might be different though, so see what yours has to say. I didn't find the procedure all that pleasant to be honest, so personally, I wouldn't do it just for a couple of months worth of protection.
