Dizziness and Vertigo

Anyone have any tips to help with dizziness and vertigo? I've had it probably 10 days during this pregnancy, so far. I never dealt with this with DD. I am drinking lots of water, eating often, but can't seem to shake it. I go back to the doctor on Monday and plan on addressing it then but was curious if anyone had experienced this and could offer some tips. It's making it really difficult to care for my 8 month old. Thanks!

Re: Dizziness and Vertigo

  • Ugh! I'm sorry you're experiencing this. I only felt dizziness very early in pregnancy, before I actually got the positive test. Small meals throughout the day hold that off. The doctor will be able to help, surely.

Have your dr test you for anemia. Only other tip, stand up slow and stay in place for a few seconds before you start walking.

  • Thank you both! @Nxy I've been tested for Anemia many times. I know at this next appointment they will be doing all the bloodwork. Is it possible to be anemic only during pregnancy?

  • I had this really bad in my last pregnancy.  I do suffer from occasional bouts of vertigo anyway, but it was bad last time.

I did take Dramamine a couple of times (ask your doctor though.)  That seemed to help a little.  But, the biggest help for me is to go on a car ride.   If I sit in the passenger seat and we go for a like a 20 minute car ride, that seems to help with getting my equilibrium sorted out.   When I'm not pregnant, I will also do a rolling flip on the floor. This gets harder the further from 30 that I get.  lol

  • @DoulaTog13 thanks for the advice! I'll definitely check my doctor about the Dramamine.  What do you mean by rolling flip?

@aehogan90 your body increases blood production by something like 50% during pregnancy so it's absolutely possible to only be anemic during pregnancy.

  • @aehogan90 I'd also get blood pressure checked. Many pharmacies have machines if you can't get into a doc and don't want to buy a digital cuff.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

  • I didn't have any bouts of vertigo while pregnant, but I did have it once for 9 days straight, and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Some thing that helped me at the time were allergy meds. I know, it may not be allergy related, but for some reason the Antivert medication that was prescribed was NOT working, but someone suggested allergies, and I did Zyrtec once a day for a week, and thats when things got a bit less unstable. I've also heard of those sea-bands (the ones you wear if you get sea sick on boats).

Also, someone suggested a chiropractor which I've also heard is good for pregnant women in general, so might not be a bad idea to just go and talk with one.

Good luck, momma. I hate vertigo.

This. It's quite likely from the added blood flow through your body right now and the increased amount going to your uterus. During my first pregnancy, I passed out a few times from low blood pressure because I was sitting in a chair for hour long classes. The blood would pool in my legs so I ended up getting prescription compression stockings to help. Constant fidgeting helped as well, anything to keep the blood moving.

  • I get this as well. I have low blood pressure and get dizzy and light headed even if I'm well hydrated and just had a snack. Like pp mentioned the big trigger for me is going from sitting to walking so I do it slowly and will just stand still for a few seconds with my eyes closed before I start walking.

When I was pregnant with my second I almost passed out at a busy mall with my toddler- my vision completely disappeared and I just sat down on the floor next to a wall with my head between my legs for a few minutes. It's scary when you're caring for your baby and it happens for the first time! The more it happens the easier it gets to figure out how to deal with the triggers.

  • @aehogan90- I have vertigo already. It started a couple years ago. When it gets really bad, I take a sudafed to dry out my ears. It makes it go away. I have to take it on planes and boats too. My med sheet that the doc gave me at my first prenatal appointment said I can take it. I haven't had to yet (since ive been preggo)but sometimes it would get so bad that I'd vomit.

I feel for you! Worst sensation ever!
  • @aehogan90 - and, btw, eye movements and head movements can be a huge trigger for vertigo since it's usually connected to the ears. There are some YouTube videos you can watch with exercises to get it to go away when it's actually happening.
  • Such good information from all of you. Thank you so much! I will be trying these various tips and tricks. Really appreciate it.
