Man... Stupid west coast time + work = I misses ALL the drama again! I only saw the first few posts while I was getting ready for work But I know you ladies did well!
Also - like someone else said - what's with the closing for 'unwelcoming' discussion??? Especially when it was the OP who so clearly violated the TOU???
Ladies, I have a question and need you expertise. I have been taking a PNV. I picked it because it was highly ranked on a site that grades supplements. I have no idea how to tell if I am actually getting what I need from it or if it is good quality (not sure if I trust the site that graded it). How do you ladies determine what PNV to take? Thanks Ladies!

Here's the convo I had with my doctor: Her: It doesn't really matter what brand you take, as long as it has 1,000mg of folic acid. Me: So, like, NatureMade is OK? Her: Oh, that's a good brand! Yeah.
And that was all the guidance I got. Plus some prescription samples that made me ill and I would never get anyway because they were super expensive.
I saw someone else say 800mg of folic was enough too, which is good because NatureMade has 800mg. I don't think you can really go wrong, short of not taking one at all.

@Sglen3 I asked my dr if she recommended any particular one and she said no, they're basically all the same. I did a lot more research of my own and used What to Expect's guideline for how much of each thing a PNV should have. I was pretty limited in my options because so many PNVs have gelatin as an ingredient, which I can't have, but I didn't like the things many vegan ones added (i.e. raspberry red leaf and other herbal blends), because they just aren't necessary in a PNV and I only wanted to take what I really needed. If I could have gelatin, I would have gone with NatureMade Prenatal + DHA. What I decided was best for me personally, is Pure Encapsulation PNV, it has just what you need and nothing more. I now take fish oil separately for the DHA. The Pure Encapsulation pills are not great to take (they're kind of big) but they don't make me nauseous at all and they don't taste as bad as they could, lol. That was my personal take on PNVs!
TTGP March Siggy Challenge: Animals Celebrating St. Patrick's Day
@Sglen3 My doctor told me basically any brand is fine, and the main thing is to find a version that doesn't make you sick to your stomach (namely because if you get morning sickness, you definitely won't want to take something that makes you nauseated anyway). My mom purchased me a brand with folate instead of folic acid for some reason that I forgot about now and I just take those.
My doctor also recommended taking vitamin D in addition to PNVs during the winter.
@ag90 not sure you meant to tag me as I didn't make the 800mg folic acid comment lol. But, while I'm here, I'll say that I prefer folate over folic acid for PNVs. Just google "folate vs folic acid" for the info.
@sglen3 - My doctor also said she didn't recommend a specific brand, as long as it had 800 mg of folic acid. When I said I was on Rainbow Light, she said "oh I really like that brand," so I've stuck with it. Anytime I debate changing, Iturn the bottle around and compare the amounts of the brand I'm tempted to switch to and the Rainbow Light bottle; every time I've decided that overall the Rainbow Light has higher or equal levels of the nutrients that are most important/I care about the most. So I've never switched.
When I asked about folate vs folic acid, my doctor said both were fine and she didn't have a preference of one over the other.
The one thing about Rainbow Light is you need to take an additional DHA. Rainbow Light has a DHA pill, but I don't like it because it has orange essential oil in it. I don't like to take EOs internally and the relevant medical organizations recommend avoiding EOs during the first trimester. So the fact that a pill that is targeting to pregnant woman has an EO is mind boggling to me. But I'll get off my soap box on that...

Mine too. And I take it at night in case it does make me sick, but so far the NatureMade is OK, just the occasional heartburn but that may be more related to what I eat for dinner.

But a lot of your vitamins don't actually have what is listed, and if they do, not in the quantities they claim. They are regulated by the FDA, but as dietary supplements-not regulated as medications/pharmaceuticals. This is where the issue is. Vitamins are regulated as far as cGMP-current good manufacturing practices- which is a set of standards to test quality. While they test quality, they do not test content. It's important to realize that in general the public sees content as part of quality, but in cGMP, it's technically not. They only care if certain chemicals are within certain ranges, there are no contaminants, or adverse reactions. cGMP covers cleanliness, control of the manufacturing process (making sure biological/chemical contaminants aren't introduced), but again, nothing on what is actually in the medicine. Companies are on their own for developing processes and quality assurance standards- which means corners can be easily cut. Many reputable companies go through USP (US Pharmacopoeia). USP is basically a third party organization (Not a US agency as the name might suggest) that evaluates the purity of the material. USP has actually pushed for the FDA to tighten regulations because they believe it's the government's job, not theirs. They've been unsuccessful (obviously) because the companies that choose not to go through USP and instead self-regulate lobby against this. They do that, because then they can basically sell placebo pills (okay, that's way over simplified, but still) and pass them off as real vitamins. but that's a whole different rant.
TL;DR: Anyway, the bottom line is, getting your daily intake from FOOD is better than pills, but if you need to take supplements to aid your absorption/level, make sure they are USP-verified supplements. A lot of the time the bottle will say USP somewhere (typically right after the name), or a quick google search should tell you.
FUN FACT: Nature Made has only very recently started using USP (and not for all products, I don't believe). When I was in college, my big graduation project was testing various vitamins and comparing what I found in the lab to the level declared on the label. They were HORRIBLE. Now, if it is USP-verified, it should be fine. But it's funny.

@KristoKekerooni that's insane. I want to know the contents of my PNVs now. I'm so mad I can't take the Nature Made ones!! Also, I think it's really sucky and terrible of companies to make PNVs and not put the full contents in them because they know pregnant women and women TTC need these for healthy babies and they are messing with that. That is just disgusting. FDA should definitely regulate and stop giving in to just those with the money to buy them off.
Now I'm all fired up. I hate things like this, absolutely cannot stand.

@ag90 - I totally feel you. But I didn't say you couldn't take them. They have started getting their products USP certified. Prenatals might be included. it's a slow process. Just look at the bottle. If they say USP, you are good, if not, switch. As a general rule: most gummies aren't USP. Most mix of vitamins (prentals, multvitamins, one a day, etc) aren't because it's a longer, harder process. If you can't find any prenatals right away that are USP, try finding a folic acid that is while you look for a prenatal that is in the meantime.
But I get it. It's frustrating. It's politics and really doesn't belong in health, but it's all over the health industry.

also, how do you feel about this website: https://labdoor.com/
I should note, *spoiler alert* one of the most popular, the Vita-fusion gummies from Walmart are NOT USP. At least last time I checked they weren't, but that was about a year ago so it might have changed... probably not though.

Now I'm all fired up. I hate things like this, absolutely cannot stand.

@KristoKekerooni Hey, girl, hey! Thanks for that info!! I had no idea vitamins could be crap! You'd think the FDA would regulate them, if only to keep snake oil salesmen from scamming innocent people.... I've seen the NatureMade commercials saying they're certified by USP but I'll check my bottle when I get home, just in case.
