First appointment & ultrasound?

I scheduled my first appointment yesterday! With my son, we wound up waiting so long for that appointment I was like 13 weeks before we went in so of course they did an ultrasound. So naturally I asked the scheduling lady what I should expect at our visit and she cut me off mid sentence and said blood/urine tests, to talk about vitamins and other things like that. Which is all fine and dandy but I actually was wanting to know if they would be doing an ultrasound so I can tell my husband to take a half day to come with me. I know this typically varies by doctor, but at that point I will be about 9 weeks. Should I tell me husband to come just in case orrrrr?

Re: First appointment & ultrasound?

  • I called my doctor to ask them since I will only be 7 weeks and my husband was debating using a vacation day for the appointment. They said they would be doing an U/S I honestly didn't realize they would at this point. My last pregnancy they didn't even see me until I was 10 weeks. I have seen a ton of people on here getting then super earl.

  • I would call them back. My OB isn't seeing me until I'm about 10.5 weeks. I only had early blood tests/ ultrasounds because I had IVF. They told me they would be doing an ultrasound in addition to blood tests, chatting and vitamins, insurance, etc.

  • Alright y'all I just called and they won't be doing one!! Ugh!! I wonder why they won't? I get not doing them at 5-7 weeks but I feel like 9 weeks you need to know if everything is at least in the right place and okay?!
  • @maddisonwallace It's so strange how different OB's are. My friend didn't get an ultrasound until she was 13 weeks pregnant. But with both my first and second they gave me one at 6ish weeks and then 7ish weeks...

  • My OB typically only does one ultrasound between 20 and 22 weeks, as long as everything is okay. :( I wish he did one earlier to ease my mind.
  • This is my first, so I'm not super familiar with what OBs do, but I was surprised mine didn't want to have me come in earlier given the fertility treatments. I have my first appointment at 8 weeks exactly. They are doing an u/s. My brother said that they only had one u/s with his daughter and it was at 20 weeks. They had 2 with his son at 8-10 weeks and 20 weeks. I guess different OBs do very different things.

  • With DS, my first u/s was around 12w.  We've since moved to another part of the state, and I was happily surprised to find out we have one at the 8w 'confirmation' appt.

I'd call them back to get more details, it really seems to vary from doctor to doctor.

With my 1st I was only 6 weeks and they did an internal ultrasound. Then one at 12, 20 and 30 weeks I think. 2 in the 1st tri, 1 in the 2nd tri and 1 in the 3rd tri

My appt next week is set up with the sonogram technician so I will be expecting another internal, I will be 7 weeks 4 days according to my calculations at my appt.

  • I would call back and ask. My Dr does one between 6-8 weeks to confirm everything is okay, and then an anatomy scan at 20-22. She said those are the only two insurance will cover. They also offer elective ones at 16 weeks (gender) and 30 weeks (4D).

  • Agree with everyone about calling back to make confirm, but my first appointment with my first and this one was/is 9 weeks. During that appointment they start with a transvaginal ultrasound.

  • Here in the UK, we have first appointment with the midwife at 8 weeks and first ultrasound at 12 weeks, followed by second ultrasound at 20 weeks and 3rd ultrasound later in the pregnancy!
  • For normal, healthy pregnancies, my OB's office usually only offers 2 US. One at 20 weeks and the dating US at 10-12 weeks during the first appointment. They do more ultrasounds for high risk patients though.
  • At the practice I went to when I was pregnant with DS, they only did 1 ultrasound at ~20 weeks. I hated it. At this one, they do a dating/confirmation of pregnancy ultrasound at 8 weeks, there's an optional one between 10-14 weeks for genetic stuff, and then the 20 week scan.
