Medications

Went to the doc yesterday and got this:
Anyone have anything to add or subtract from this list based on what their docs have said?

*TW I feel like my bleeding MAY be due to taking Mucinex Fast Max - has phenyelphrine - even though the pharmacy I called said it was safe for first trimester. Neither doc or nurse coorelated it to the bleeding... *TW

  • you may want to ask about Yeast Infection treatments as well.  Those are super common in pregnancy.

  • My medication sheet from my doc said that ibuprofen was okay, even though everything else I've read has said no. Also, I do remember Pepto Bismol was also not recommended.

  • I was prescribed Augmentin for my sinus infection by my GP yesterday after bringing the list from the OB. The OB nurse also told me to switch from Tylenol to Motrin (ibuprofen) for the painful cramps I had last night. I just kept taking the Tylenol. Hopefully meeting with HR OB Monday and will ask again.

  • I was never given a list of medications that were safe to take when pregnant.  I did have some spotting after I took Tylenol PM when I was pregnant with DD1.  I stayed away from that after that happened.  I also read the labels and see what kind of warnings they have on the containers.
If you have access to a nurse line, you could always call and ask too.  I was told not to take sudafed when I called and asked when I had a really bad cold.

  • Anyone know why the Unisom sleep tabs and not the Unisom sleep gels on the one list? That's new to me.
  • I took augmentin during my first pregnancy.
  • I would question the use of ibuprofen.  From the drug guide:

  • I agree @Cryssteen. That's why I didn't make the switch... I should have asked, but I assume it was suggested since I was already bleeding and passing painful clots, so maybe she thought they would thin out? That started happening with the Tylenol. We are working with a hematologist to rule out a previously diagnosed blood disorder (couldn't take ibuprofen then) and he now says I don't have it, but there is a small chance I have another... since things are up in the air, I figured I'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • I had a list from my first pregnancy, but not this time. I know they have reevaluated what is safe and what isn't, so I don't know. I do know that my doctor said absolutely no ibuprofen or anything of that nature.
  • The list I have includes Benadryl under the nausea category as well as allergies/congestion. I would have never thought to take Benadryl for nausea, but I finally tried it yesterday and it definitely helps!!

@Jmccabe12210 my list says to only take half a tab of Unisom, so the gel is probably not recommended bc it can't be split in half? Just my guess, don't know for sure...
  • My doctor told me Benadryl is not safe :/ Weird...

And I've also heard what others are saying about pepto.

  • *TW* I had a MC shortly after being sick. I was told Mucinex FastMax was okay. It's not!!! I refuse to take any of it in my next pregnancy.

  • I am so annoyed. I called my OB because I have a terrible cold - I was sent home from work because I looked miserable. I called the OB to make sure which medicine I could take that was safe for nursing and pregnancy, and the nurse was like, remember the book you got with your first pregnancy? You can have the same medicines you could have done. Anything over the counter is fine, which is just not true. I don't know if she was really rude or I'm just taking it the wrong way... but argh! Good thing I don't have to interact with her that much. Just because I'm a STM doesn't mean I don't freak out about pregnancy stuff!
  • @nimmunogirl I have a terrrrrible cold/sinus infection and had a fever this morning (100.3). Called the office and they're having me take Tylenol sinus every 4 hours, lots of fluids & rest. If not better by Friday then I'm supposed to go in.
  • There are so many new medications / variations out there that docs and even pharmacists don't even really know about or understand the ingredients of. I would call both the pharmacist and the doc because things can change quickly, especially between pregnancies.
